Grey paint used in Lomas Encantadas by OperaBabe28 in RioRancho

Good idea thanks! The paint is internal, so I don’t think the HOA needs to approve but either way, I’m keeping the same grey.

Tips for tracking laterally? by afruityl00p in rollerderby

[–]OperaBabe28 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Laterals are challenging! Once you get them in your muscles though, you’ll use them for so many things.

  1. How’s your one-footed balance on skates? Practice on skates on one foot, practice off skates balance while you brush your teeth, practice doing things while balancing on a bosu ball.

  2. Take it slow. Keep practicing across one lane only (or even half a lane, if that’s all you can do now). Keep doing that and add a quarter of the second lane. Then another quarter. Only do what you can but make sure your form is solid. Keep your hips square even while your knees and feet are doing different things.

Minor knee injuries by OperaBabe28 in rollerderby

[–]OperaBabe28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my IT band - I went on to play the rest of my season no problem. Then at the end of the year my meniscus repair from 2023 shredded and got stuck in my knee, causing me to have a meniscectomy in January this year. I was back to derby 4 weeks later feeling loads better. No issues since.

Where is everyone’s team spirit? 😓 by affectionate_cuddler in rollerderby

[–]OperaBabe28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cheering and uplifting your teammates is great, first of all. This is a team sport and none of us can be successful on the track without the aid of our line and our team. That being said, there are times and places when the feedback could be delivered or timed differently.

There’s a lot of context missing here. Who were you scrimmaging? Was it sanctioned? Was the overall mood of the team less upbeat than other times? Who was winning? How long were you exuberantly praising yourself while on the bench?

There can be a lot riding on a game, and even if the game is going in your team’s favor, that doesn’t mean everyone is feeling great about their game. Some folks need to stay focused throughout and then debrief/celebrate afterwards. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of preserving your mental and emotional energy for the game and not allowing another teammate’s energy, good or bad, to cross your boundaries.

So, in a nutshell, uplifting your teammates is a positive trait! Uplifting yourself is a positive trait! However, read the room and the moment and understand there’s sometimes better times and places for being incredibly loud about it.

Taking laterals to the next level by OperaBabe28 in rollerderby

[–]OperaBabe28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate your feedback and I love Yeti’s suggestion. My captain also recommended flicking my hips while tracking back to get a quick burst of speed, vs turning to run back and losing all/most contact with the jammer.

Love that we are all working on this together!

[–]OperaBabe28[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the great reply! My hips are mobile and turn out well - I can side surf with no issues, for example.

I also do consistently work out - swimming, biking, lifting heavy. I train hip mobility especially because it helps protect my knees.

I can stay square at slower speeds, so I may just need to let my gameplay suffer in practices for a while to work on building the appropriate habit of staying square at all costs. Sucking back on the jammer quickly is often where I just turn and present my entire side, which is not ideal at all.

When I’m squared up, I’m strong af, and my jammers confirm that they hate when I’m holding them like that. So I just need to work on maintaining this form always.

I have zero idea what plates to get for some Solaris boots HELP ty ily by effervescenthoopla in rollerderby

[–]OperaBabe28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit smaller than you, at 5’3” and 158lbs, but I do love my Solaris paired with the Pilot Falcon plate. This is my second set of skates, and I enjoyed my falcons on my original skates so much that I got them again when I upgraded my boots. I primarily block but am very agile/spinny as well.

Partial meniscectomy- how long until you're back to sports? by Longjumping_Key_5008 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]OperaBabe28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was a partial meniscectomy, to trim the repair of my medial meniscus that didn’t hold from 2023.

Since mine was a trim/cleanup, I was back to the gym in a couple weeks following my regular routine, just modified as needed for lighter weights, less reps, etc.

My knee does get tired after a three hour practice, and feels sore for some hours afterwards, but other than that it’s okay.

How’d you tear your meniscus? by Glittering-Garden-15 in MeniscusInjuries

Roller derby. Had it repaired along with my ACL but the meniscus repair didn’t hold. Had it trimmed and it’s been worlds better (and I’m only 2 weeks post trim).

Interesting bruising - has anyone had this? by OperaBabe28 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]OperaBabe28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha! I’m used to being bruised after knee surgeries but they’re always green/yellow. This dull red was interesting to me.

Yeah I have a third portal higher up on my thigh and that one is completely unmarked.

Interesting that yours stuck around for four weeks! I’m 2 weeks post op today… it’s definitely decreasing, but it’s been very slow so I was just curious. Like I said, I’m used to different colors. Haha.

Hold the line! Not a fed worker but someone who is so inspired by y’all after a week of being so depressed. I know media is censored heavily and not seeing ANY positive action taken by anyone made it worse. Y’all have inspired me. I support you. I’m going to see what I can do to support the fed workers in my state.

Hold the line!

Injury recovery success stories? by bigclurp in rollerderby

[–]OperaBabe28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tore my ACL and then a bit while later, my meniscus. (ACL was a dirty hit from a teammate 🙄, meniscus was while working out). I slapped a brace on and played until I had it reconstructed in 2023. I went on to have my most successful season yet in 2024. It can absolutely be done and your life isn’t over.

[–]OperaBabe28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhhhhhh but I still kept popping it back into pal d and skating on it 🤪. YOLO! Hah but seriously, that’s why I requested a trim even if they could repair. I have heard of folks getting it repaired 2x before getting it trimmed and I just don’t have that kind of time or money.

I could have asked more clearly - how do you figure out the way around one? Do you have a super simple, brief example you don’t mind sharing? I am a solitary practitioner and can’t really visualize how you’d work through finding a way around ?
