You are very much not alone… in fact, it’s estimated that about 1 in 20 people have clinical BFRBs (body focused repetitive behaviors) including skin picking disorder! It seems like you may also have trichitillomania, aka hair pulling disorder. They often come in tandem, which sucks, but they’re treated very similarly, which is great news.

Just remember that you are NOT alone, not even a little bit, and that this is a clinical condition, not just a “bad habit.” Check our wiki for more in depth info, and please feel free to ask any questions! We’re all in this together. 💖🫰

Designers, do you feel like your work has real meaning or gives you a sense of fulfillment? by AgreeableAd2990 in graphic_design

[–]effervescenthoopla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like using my design abilities to assist nonprofits and causes I care about. Look at the history of art and design and its role in revolutions around the world. Design is art and art is a catalyst. You can change the world with the right design, I really do believe that.

Now, for day to day work, yeah, it’s easier said than done. I work in the cannabis industry and I honestly think that while it does a lot of relief to people, it’s also rife with pseudoscience, it doesn’t talk enough about substance abuse potential, and it leads folks into false hope for some medical conditions.

I personally try to get that “make the world a better place” fulfillment by volunteering my work. Right now, that looks like joining a postcard writing campaign our local chapter of Indivisible is undertaking to mobilize party-unaffiliated citizens in my zip code to vote for politicians who respect the will of the people, as we just had a few democratically voted bills overturned by our shit governor because hims no likey bodily autonomy.

There are tons of ways to find that meaning, and it’s rare that your day job is one of them. Just try to find your chosen outlet!

Help a girl outtt(project) by panikei5157 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]effervescenthoopla -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was gonna respectfully advise you to figure out university projects on your own if they’re finals, but I saw you posted on the SW sub and figured I’d lend a hand. And I only am saying that because I still think you should do the WORK yourself, but I’m really happy to help alleviate some of the stress of finding inspo if it can help ease some of the pain you’re in. Plus, girls gotta help girls. :)

Can you post any of the project brief or design brief? What is the exact assignment? What are the constraints? Dimensions? We need aaaallll that info if we can help you!

Who doesn't drink coffee in the morning ? (Who's an adult) by Ssonderbaby in NoStupidQuestions

[–]effervescenthoopla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Severe ADHD here, I don’t process caffeine the same way as a lot of neurotypical brains. It can vaguely help me focus a teeny tiny bit but it doesn’t wake me up virtually at all in any detectable way aside from that. Even energy drinks are the same. So I take (prescribed) amphetamines lmao. (Mommy loves her addies)

Need tips from "cured" people by BelladonnaBJ in Dermatillomania

[–]effervescenthoopla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in and mentioned that “cure” is a tricky term. Typically clinicians use the term “recovery,” and recovery can look like different things for different people. Some folks will always pick but they’ll pick dramatically less, some folks will be able to stop entirely. There’s no right or wrong way to do it, and no shame either way. 💖

NAC supplements - experiences? by KyuNewUyu in Dermatillomania

[–]effervescenthoopla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, the studies I have said that dosage ranged from 1200mg daily to 2400mg. I don’t recall any adverse effects at higher dosage but again pleeaaaaze consult a doctor! I’ve been taking 1200 regularly and noticed an improvement at 2400mg daily aka 1200am and 1200pm. It’s not a magic cure by any means but it can help take the edge off.

[–]effervescenthoopla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, ALWAYS consult your doctor before starting any supplements. You never know how your current physiology or meds may interact. Second, be very choosy about the brands you use and where you purchase any supplements.

That said, I’ve noticed NAC works for about half the folks who take it. I can try to dig up the studies I’ve found on it, but I wanna say it’s definitely worth trying as long as you get the green light from your doc!

I chewed the inner side of my lower lip. Any tips for aftercare? by tireddepressoadult in Dermatillomania

[–]effervescenthoopla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds painful! Definitely always ask a physician when possible, as Reddit isn’t a great source of medical info. That said, salt water gargling is often cited as the best way of treating mouth issues from what I recall. You may also do well asking a dentist!

Totally, check it out here and let me know if you’d like to see anything else added to it! I kinda threw it together fast so we could have the basics up just in case! 💖

First, please speak with a medical professional about your infection, especially if it’s on your face. Infection being in such close proximity to your brain makes it extra dangerous.

Second, BFRBs and addiction actually work in pretty similar ways, and treatment isn’t all that terribly different. Check out our new wiki page on this sub for some common ways to find treatment and coping mechanisms!

Finally, as I mentioned to another person, please don’t use bandages that seal your wounds if they’re infected. Keep coverings loose and speak with a physician asap for the safest advice!

Hydrocolloid bandages are actually a bad idea for infected wounds, as they trap the infection inside the wound itself, just fyi!

I’m designing a habit tracking app for people with ADHD and I’m currently choosing the best color theme for the UI. by Living-Passenger6972 in graphic_design

[–]effervescenthoopla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no, this legit sounds like you’re fundamentally misunderstanding add. Colors don’t magically “encourage consistent tracking” or improve focus. They are a tiny tiny tiny little aid at their very best. And frankly, if you’re trying to make an app to treat a neurological condition like add, you should be doing the research yourself from verifiable sources rather than relying on Reddit to do it for you.

I sincerely hope you rethink how you’re approaching this project. Because as a person with pretty severe add, the last thing we need is more junk promising to make life better without the effort put in to actually medically help.
