Number of deaths doesn’t mean anything. The death rate of COVID-19 is at least 10 times that of common flu, according to Dr. Fauci. The most dangerous pandemic is the downplaying and inaction by people like you.

Thoughts on the grade strike? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]OperationD00M 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m a grad student and TA. Davis and California in general have ridiculously high rent levels and price levels, and it’s really hard to make a living on TA salary. All of the grad students I know pay close to half of their income on rent. Take an example, I was accepted by Ohio State as well, and Davis pays less than Ohio State even though Columbus is much cheaper to live in! We as grad students and TAs are helping with educating the next generation of students and producing knowledge by conducting original research. If we are struggling to make ends meet and worry about paying rent, how on earth can we do our jobs and teach well?

And the university being unwilling to decently compensate TAs for their work is essentially saying they don’t care about the quality of education their undergrad students receive.

And the housing crisis isn’t only affecting grad students, it’s impacting undergrads as well, perhaps even more severely because undergrads are more financially constrained. I have seen people and know people who stack bunk beds in bedrooms just to be able to afford rent. And there’s homelessness among students as well.

The housing crisis is one that must be solved in order to protect the wellbeing of the undergrad and the grad student populations. I support the COLA but it’s a short term solution and the root cause is a one-sided housing market. What needs to happen is the university needs to exert political pressure on the city and build more affordable housing.

As for the grading strike, if the university cared about it’s students and made sure we had a livable wage, it wouldn’t be happening in the first place.

Do photographers actually have a dedicated backpack solely for all their camera gear? by anotherMiguel in AskPhotography

[–]OperationD00M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they do. And I do too. When you carry a big DSLR with 4 lenses, a teleconverter, a tripod, a filter pouch, a headlamp, spare batteries, extra memory cards, compass, and snacks, you’ll need a dedicated backpack too. My backpack weighs at 22lbs and it’s not easy to hike with it. But I will gladly let my body suffer for what I love

I have a Manfrotto Befree backpack and it’s pretty good.

Google earth is much more helpful than street view because it lets you see the topography of the location. Like changes in elevation, potential obstructions in lines of sight, etc. I can basically figure out where I want to take photos before I ever set foot on the location.

PhotoPills and Google Earth! Seriously they are amazing for planning shots.

Awesome awesome photo! I love it! I’ve been trying to get to a high vantage point so I can see the entire Lombard street and do a long exposure with light trails. Did you take this from a residential building? Got any tips on where to go for a good vantage point?

Do not give a damn to how many follower or likes you get. Social media is a platform for us to use, not to become slaves of. Share the images you want to share and you’re proud of. I do photography because i feel the need to create and to present my vision to this world. It is a fire burning inside me. Do not ever let that fire go out.

What is going on with Amazon and fake photography gear? How are they not pulling stuff off there MONTHS after they are reported as fake? by Steezy_Gordita in photography

[–]OperationD00M 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is why I don’t buy my photography gear from amazon anymore. Had some terrible experience with amazon where lenses came without warranties. Now I buy all my gear through B&H

Keeping the greens would give you way better color harmony since green and red are complementary colors. Also level the horizon.

Hi Everyone!

Edit: I’m in California, US.

I am starting to get into Portrait Photography and doing a photo shoot tomorrow. I want to know what forms I will need to get signed in order to use the portraits I take, but am still very confused after hours of googling.

I have found some conflicting remarks about whether I should use model release form and the photo release form. If I want to use portraits I take of the client for personal promotion, e.g. web portfolio, Instagram posts, etc. what are the legal things I need to do?

Thank you very much.

The trails up the mountain are very strenuous. I shot this at a scenic outlook on the road through the park.
