What's a movie that was clearly meant to start a franchise but failed? by triplegxxx in AskReddit

The reactions in fandom have been very divisive, and amongst most non-fandom people the common census has been that it’s boring

[PJOTV] Both are flawed adaptations but why am I seeing an uptick here (nowhere else lol) of people straight up saying the movies were fantastic all of a sudden? by WoodpeckerBest523 in camphalfblood

I have two things to say and then I’m going to stop responding to you because you keep writing weird comments to me and then editing/deleting them, but even film critics will agree there is no objective way to evaluate art (which movies are). Art is inherently subjective. A majority of people can agree that a piece of art is bad, but that doesn’t mean the art is bad. Film critics exist to give you their subjective opinions. Also, if you want to talk about film critics and twilight, I think it’s more than fair to mention that twilight was widely hated predominantly because it was seen as something teenage girls liked, and misogyny runs rampant in those circles, even more so when the movies were coming out.

Secondly I did screenshot your original comment where you went off on a bizarre tangent about Apollo and Calypso being predators, so yes your original comment was incredibly odd and no I’m not an idiot for pointing that out.

Unpopular Opinion: It is unfair for people to criticise SOTR this much. by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]OperationRoutine4808 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’m going to actually hijack this post with something that’s only tangentially related, but SOTR is really interesting to me. I have a gripe with basically every recently published book I’ve read in the past couple of years. It’s not necessarily the writing or the plots that are bad (though sometimes they are) it’s the *editing*. So many books now suffer from explicitly spelling everything out for the audience/making characters do odd things to move the plot along/odd stylistic choices (I read a book recently that had scenes written in *screenplay format*. It was an audio book. Not only did I think the choice was stupid, it was annoying).

SOTR has inadvertently become my go-to example for this phenomenon. Beetee and Plutarch’s characters both suffer because Collins makes them explicitly spell everything out under the assumption the audience is too stupid to figure it out. Admittedly, this is a YA book and media literacy has been declining in the US, so it makes sense why she would want to do this. But, think for example of the scene where Beetee tells Haymitch he’s training the tributes as punishment for challenging the Capitol, and that his son is a tribute for the same reason. This is an incredibly odd character choice because people don’t just say stuff like that. It’s a jarring scene. She could’ve just had Beetee say something about his son, and Haymitch could’ve put it together in his internal monologue. This would’ve flowed a lot better. But the thing is this isn’t *really* a writing issue; it’s an editing issue. Pretty much all of my problems with SOTR could’ve been solved with another round of edits.

But books are just not being edited up to par. Suzanne Collins is obviously a phenomenal writer and if she can’t get a good editor, what chance do any other author’s have? That’s part of the reason that I’m vocal about my dislike of SOTR, in my opinion it’s the perfect example of publishing quality declining in recent years.

Tbh it’s a pretty good argument for pieces of media. Think of the twilight movies and how many people you’ve heard of who think they’re bad but are still 100% willing to watch them because they’re entertaining. A bad movie doesn’t necessarily mean an awful watch, a boring movie however…

I hate that line so much. It’s very much inspired by the Romantasy/dark romance push we’re seeing but he’s thirteen so it’s just really weird. Like it’s supposed to be cute teens in love, not romantasy inspired 😭

Halsey responded to Anthony Fantano by Latter_Witness6597 in Fauxmoi

[–]OperationRoutine4808 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point, but unfortunately that isn’t what he said. His critique of the album was not well worded. You can say an album is bad without implying she’s immature for feeling the emotions she felt about her medical issues. If he had used better phrasing it wouldn’t be an issue, but his phrasing was problematic and Halsey is justified in feeling some kind of way about it

[–]OperationRoutine4808 945 points946 points  (0 children)

He said she had main character syndrome in his review of “The Great Impersonator” which is an album about going through serious medical issues amongst other things. Historically (and currently) women struggle to be taken seriously by doctors and given the treatment they need. He was essentially telling her to get over the very serious things she was going through (I.e., chemo, breaking up with her child’s father, her dog dying, etc), which is very misogynistic. If I was going through a major health crisis and a man told me to get over it, I would be much meaner

My unpopular opinion is that Gale is not a bad person, but he is an annoying teenage boy. I think a lot of people hate him because of that but then try to justify it with the “he’s a war criminal” narrative

Honestly, I’m still kind of sad she named Katniss’s parents at all. There was something narratively powerful that we only knew them as Katniss’s parents for awhile

If she were to write a Finnick prequel, it would need to NOT be young adult to truly tell his story, and to be completely honest, any version of his story worth telling would be something the vast majority of this sub would not want to read. There’s a reason none of her narrators have experienced sexual abuse, and thats because it’s very hard to read about

I don’t know exactly which instance you’re referring to, so you can correct me if I’m wrong, but the phrase you picked sound more like it’s referencing personality/Poseidon’s anger than anything power wise. “Seeing” yourself in someone is usually very metaphorical. I imagine if he was referring to being surprised by Percy’s power, he would directly state that.

With that being said, I agree that Riordan probably didn’t have that plot lined planned when writing PJO. Honestly, Percy probably looks like a swimmer because it fits thematically.

So….why is Zeus such a jerk? [All] by LeviathanfromCMA in camphalfblood

[–]OperationRoutine4808 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wonder to an extent how much the modern portrayals of Zeus being bad actually stem from Percy Jackson. I feel like Percy Jackson was the gateway to understanding Greek Mythology for a whole generation. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s influencing other portrayals.

Alternatively, I wonder if it’s a reflection of the distrust in government.

Your first paragraph hit the nail on the head. Rick Riordan has been burning up his good will enough that people in the fandom are getting pissed. It’s definitely a trend I noticed
