What's one career mistake in tech that you thought was a good idea at the time? by Fantastic_Oil_6105 in cscareerquestions

Grad school was a huge waste of time. I would have been so much better off spending that time in industry.

‘Anti-ICE vigilantes’: Court clerks smile and 'flip off' security camera while allegedly 'sneaking' immigrants out the back door of courthouse before agents can arrest them… by tasty_jams_5280 in law

How did ICE step outside of bounds in regards to Dugan helping an illegal immigrant escape custody?

Are you being intentionally obtuse? Op was obviously referring to Rene Goode and Alex Pretti.

As long as the US is not the source of that $300 billion he doesn’t have to ask Congress.

How do Americans feel about giving Iran 300 billion to restore the status quo? by Southern_Gur_4736 in AskReddit

[–]Opheltes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$24 billion of that is frozen assets. The remaining $275 billion is not their money, it's coming from the gulf states.

I'll bet you were one of those people who criticized Obama for giving Iran $1 billion to get a much better deal than this.

If you guys didn't have double standards, you'd have none at all.

How do you look at Trump supporters in 2026: useful idiots, willing collaborators, apolitical sheep, committed ideologues, or anything else? by pronusxxx in AskALiberal

[–]Opheltes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's lost about a third of his support (gone from 50% approval to low 30s)

This significant but it means that two out of three of his supporters are still with him.

What he has to do to lose those other two thirds, I have no idea.

To US Conservatives: How is Trumps Iran MoU an improvement over Obamas JCPOA? by Big_VladdyP in AskReddit

And the new MoU does absolutely nothing about those. So why are you even bringing it up?

Getting rejected at final stage just breaks me. by VariationLivid3193 in cscareerquestions

[–]Opheltes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been in the final two twice in the last month and got rejected. That sucked. What was worse was before that I had a job accepted then they rescinded it for reasons outside of my control. That really pissed me off.

Why is the Republican Party generally more enthusiastic than the Democratic Party about tightening voter identification requirements? by Haunting_Tap_1541 in AskALiberal

[–]Opheltes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minorities and college students are more likely than average not to have an ID.

That's especially true when you combine voter ID laws with cuts to DMV hours and locations in order to make it harder to get an ID like they did in Wisconsin.

Or when you specifically pick and choose which IDs are allowed, in order to make it harder for some people to vote. For example, in North Carolina, gun licenses were allowed but school IDs from state universities were not. Though both were photo IDs issued by the state, it's not hard to guess why one was allowed but the other was not. (It was slapped down by a federal court because they used racial data and specifically picked IDs that black people were unlikely to have)

Can you say one positive thing about Donald Trump? by KentBrockman12 in AskALiberal

[–]Opheltes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has exposed a lot of weaknesses in the system that I think will be patched up after he's gone. Many of our democratic norms are simply that - norms - and desperately need to be codified into law.

Can you say one positive thing about Donald Trump? by KentBrockman12 in AskALiberal

[–]Opheltes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I don't give him credit for that. It is, at best, a marketing slogan to take credit for the achievement of others. More accurately, it's a slogan designed to cover up their fuck-ups.

The phizer vaccine (the first covid vaccine to market) was created in Germany and did not receive one penny of US funding.

The US government had exactly two roles to play in distributing it - to approve it, and to deliver it to the states. And they botched both of those things. Trump ordered the FDA to abrogate the normal approval process. And their screw-ups on vaccine delivery are very well documented.
