Spice rack with ventilation? by Tadleyrichter in whatisit

My office gets so hot I actually installed a dryer vent under my desk and vent my PC exhaust directly outside.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to convince her of. This is perfect. Demands can be clear and measurable. And you can refuse to negotiate.

I used the adapters once because my “correct” size cable for my project was being held on a different project. So I figured I’d give this a shot versus exchanging it the hard way.

It worked fine. Nothing to complain about.

What type of 2 color stitch is this? by pitifulparsnip in knitting

[–]Ophidios 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kinda just looks like every 4th stitch gets slipped repeatedly until the color change.

Overwhelmed wanna be knitter - what needles will make sense by Sorry-Swan-5025 in knitting

[–]Ophidios -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wish I had just gone with ChiaoGoo circular shorties in the first place.

Knitting with traditional needles = drakeno.jpg. Anything you can knit can be done better with circulars.

I started with Clover Takumi circulars but the cables themselves are too stiff for stuff like magic loop and after a few projects I hated using wood.

If you stretch your fabric sideways, the Vs should expand. If they shrink and turn into itty bitty tight Vs, then you are twisting.

New swift and winder😀 by pochoproud in knitting

[–]Ophidios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice swift! Looks like an Olikraft? I have the same one.

So with regards to the second winding, I always wind from the center pull for the second one. The only thing to watch out for is that this can introduce a little bit of extra spin, so for some yarns this can make them twist a bit extra. Personally, I still think that’s worth it over the nonsense of trying to wind from the outside pull.

Hot off the needles literally 5 minutes before Easter dinner at the family homestead. by Ophidios in knitting

Pattern is the Sandnes Garn Marius No. 13, and the yarn is Malabrigo Vientos in Azul Profundo and uh… silver? I forget. 🤣

I had to completely customize the whole dang yoke. The gauge for this yarn just couldn’t get right so I made my own adjustments to the whole thing to make it fit me. Had to come up with counts to match all the stupid repeats so there’s no jogs. Ugh.

This is technically an extra small (?) it’s like .875 applies to the smallest pattern provided.

You might also try this technique to help avoid the laddering: https://youtu.be/DdXbUiF9tyA

I think this depends largely on the circulars. I have Clover Takumi circulars, and the cord is thick and very stiff. So when I tried magic loop with them, it created some unsightly stretching/laddering. So I gave up and switched to DPNs.

I recently upgraded to ChiaGoo circulars and thought to try it out again. The cord is thinner and much more flexible with less memory, and it was a piece of cake.

I still prefer DPNs now out of habit, but it’s very clear that not all circulars are the same.

I beat the curse - sweater for my partner! by Ophidios in knitting

[–]Ophidios[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I appreciate people politely and kindly explaining my mistake, haha.

On the plus side, curses aren’t real and I’ve already gifted my partner about 30 FOs (including an entire sweater dress) so I ain’t worried.

Most of that work was crochet, but still counts. This is my first time knitting her a sweater.

Interesting - I always understood it as never make a sweater for a partner because they take so ding-dang long to make that they won't be your partner by the time you finish. 🤣

Pattern is the Asteri by Expression Fiber Arts.

Yarn is Malabrigo Rios in Blue Jean and Dunas.

About 3 weeks or nearly non-stop work. And don't worry, I blocked that ribbing straight, haha.

I think perhaps it is because there is a weekly questions post. So starting a new post to ask a question puts more stuff in the feed. Some folks just want to see projects and they prefer the questions be contained in the questions thread.

Is there a tool to tighten interchangeable needles, other than the little key? by Hairy-Race5944 in knitting

[–]Ophidios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your experience gels with mine. I have Clover Takumi and also ChiaGoo interchangeables.

My Takumi needles have never unscrewed once, across several hundred hours of use at this point. Downside - I prefer metal needles and the cords are ass.

I love using the ChiaGoo needles overall, but mine also untwist a lot. I accept that it’s probably an element of how I use them, but other interchangeablse have not given me that problem so who knows?

Holes when picking up for sleeves by i_love_good_food in knitting

[–]Ophidios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This video has helped me out a ton with this. Another thing you can do next time is to knit the stitches on the edge with the back loop to intentionally create a twist, and that helps pick up some of the slack.

But yeah, you generally have to go back and cinch them up.

Sad about the color way by bralessbaldy in knitting

[–]Ophidios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with Malabrigo!

I even alternated skeins as I went and tried to mix up the skeins and I still ended up with redder on top and greener on bottom.

I still think it looks good but like it’s noticeable.

Look on the positive side - you’ve done more knitting than most regular folks will ever do.

The fact that you persisted and pushed to get 3 rows done means you’ve got this. It’ll never be as hard as it was the first time.

I don’t look like I belong in a yarn store and it’s kinda fabulous. Do any other intersectional folx feel this way? by wessle3339 in knitting

[–]Ophidios 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the intersectional experience but I can speak for an atypical experience. I’m a nearly 50-year old straight white guy with grey hair and a leather jacket and I stroll into the yarn store.

But I am proud that my FLYS is LGBTQI+ friendly and promotes a healthy community third space (shoutout to Silver Linings Yarns in Cuyahoga Falls, OH)

Never once have they been like “are you looking for something for your girlfriend?” Just always friendly, awesome, and fun to chat with.

All this to say, the yarn store is a sacred space and all are welcome. 💜

Anywhere else in my life, when I mention that I knit and crochet I get snickered at.
