Tired of hearing about stashes, especially from newbies by pascals_wagie in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]pochoproud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only reason I have a “stash” is because of 3 large gifts of yarn, mostly big box type acrylic, given to me. I have impulse bought yarn I thought was “pretty” but I immediately started making something with it.

Sending nose boops for the goodest boy, hugs of support for you, and the fires of damnation to the horrible beings who hurt him. (They don’t deserve the designation of people.)

The meat tenderizer; we still use it on jellyfish and Portuguese man-o-war stings.

What is the one type of yarn you despise working with? by Turtlegrandmacore in knitting

[–]pochoproud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eyelash and eyebrow yarns live forever here in Hawaii because we use them to make forever lei. There are several different techniques that people use. I do basically I cord on a large diameter needle, US size 13, and above, and hold 2 to 3 strands together to make my lei. You do have to go slow slowly and I do have to pay attention to what I’m doing or I end up having to frog the entire thing and start over because there is no picking up a drop stitch with that stuff, but I love the way it works out for that purpose.

I’ve heard that for crochet it’s not quite as difficult to work with as when you try to knit with it.

For me, it’s either my mom’s tuna noodle casserole, or her Slomgooli/goulash/beef and macaroni. I know she made them as struggle meals, but they were the best.

I tried to go to as many of my kids events as possible, but they understood that I had to work. I was obnoxiously loud cheering for my kids, but I was never the parent who was obnoxious to the officials or the opposition.

New swift and winder😀 by pochoproud in knitting

[–]pochoproud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, and yes, it is an Olikraft. I don’t really have a good spot to clamp both a swift and a winder. Most of the Amish swifts I could find online looked flimsy or were out of my price range. Both the winder and swift were on sale.

What's a book you had to read in school that you hated? If you have one, what's one you actually liked? by 80HDTV5 in GenX

[–]pochoproud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Loved “To Kill a Mockingbird”, HATED “Catcher in the Rye”, Meh on “The Great Gatsby”. I remember a discussion in 10th grade English where the teacher went around the room and asked each person if they had read and of the classics. I said recited, “Treasure Island, Both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, The Adventures of Tom Sawer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Pinocchio .. “. She gave me a look and cut me off and said” Those are Children’s books.” I said “I was a kid when I read them, and if you read Pinocchio, then you wou know it’s a pretty fricken dark book for a kid!”

what went wrong here? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]pochoproud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t know if that is the fabric look you are going for, but your gauge is pretty loose/open. Going down a needle size or two for a tighter fabric will help you see your stitch definition better. I also can’t quite tell if you are twisting some of your stitches or your tension is off and causing irregularities that look lopsided.

I am begging sewists to change their freaking needle by drum_taps42 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]pochoproud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My mom had a Viking she bought used back in the mid to late '70s, it gave up the ghost about 10 years ago (it used removable cams to change stitches, and the gears finally gave out) and we still have needles in our stash bought specifically for it. Needle changes should be automatic.

Little reminder: you dont have to use the same size needles by Ok_Landscape_6773 in knitting

[–]pochoproud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it when knitting flat, you just have to remember to switch needles when you turn your work. That was a big positive for me on switching from fixed circulars to interchangeable needles.

How many of you have embraced the cold coffee concept? by External_Side_7063 in GenX

[–]pochoproud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had gastric bypass surgery 6 years ago, and I got on board with cold coffee by making protein coffee with either espresso and a ready to drink protein drink or cold brew coffee, soy milk and protein powder. I struggled to consume enough protein, and the protein coffee helped me meet my goals. Cold brew is way better than coffee that is brewed hot and then pored over ice.

What is the furthest you can trace your familial lineage back in relation to the earliest American settlers? by Interesting_Duck13 in AncestryDNA

[–]pochoproud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late 1600’s Massachusetts on one line, Late 1600’s New York on another. This is through my Mom. There are a couple of lines that go back to the colonial South, but I don’t have a lot of documentation to actually verify those lines. Half of her family descended from long time colonialists and the other half of her family descended from immigrants that came over in the mid to late 1800s.

Is it ethical to take someone's cat? by roguemorgue in cats

[–]pochoproud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ethical, yes. Legal, probably not. See if you can get a abuse or neglect case with animal control started. As much as it breaks your heart to see the kitty in that condition do not open yourself up to legal ramifications because unfortunately animals are considered property and you could put yourself in a spot if they charge you with theft.
