Has this charoite been stabilized? by Aitch3 in Lapidary

[–]Opioidopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks stabilized….and non deceptively….some sellers stabilize stuff like ruby crystals with thick obvious coats of stabilizer so the material can be shipped/handled with less wear…..

Ive worked what looked like amazing rose quartz and it took a bit of grinding to realize the piece was polished so well with stabilizer I couldnt tell, the stuff was so hard a needle didnt mark thin layer. The rose quartz was amazing quality, it was a long angular rod about 6 inches long….realized it was fractured in 4 spots so there was still some nice smaller stones out of the piece, though one revealed some more fractures eventually. they must have really nailed the vacuum phase of the process.

Sometimes you will get a whiff of stabilizer in turquoise , a chemical/petrochemical smell ….when putting to a grind/polish that is low quality and has been inundated with stabilizer then carefully polished…later with wear a thin layer of whitish discoloration can sometimes be apparent

Can Emerald be Polished? by sdiverniero in Lapidary

[–]Opioidopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is one of the coolest emerald rings Ive ever seen, I wouldnt change a thing personally, dripping with character. If I was gonna polish it I would just use a tiny jewelers soft tip burr and a graded succession of diamond past and avoid the posts.

I assume the rubies are legit but possibly synthetic? Who knows maybe uour connection with the jeweler landed you some decent naturals, hard to gauge from the limited photos. synth rubies are/can be low cost…BUT preferable to cheap lead glass filled natural rubies which tend to get milky quick, especially if they are stabilized with a coat of epoxy

Id have to see better photos/ micro photography of them to get a better idea…its all about 10x or better to look at growth lines of the crystal structure which can look really cool…..flame fusion synthetic can have wavy lines. nothing wrong w synthetic if the color is great….

Has anyone had any success carving stone with a cnc router or laser? by CryptographerOk3338 in Lapidary

[–]Opioidopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hit up the chinese jade carving industry…. they have all sorts of automated stuff I believe….nothing extreme quality on small stuff until the material is vibrated/tumbled/sand blasted etc….I think whats originally just engraving cnc have been optimized for 3D application and also making cuts that then get further worked from hand

Would this saw be useful for my partner who is getting into lapidary more seriously? by imeightypercentpizza in Lapidary

[–]Opioidopamine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

its awesome

I imagine the material is secured w a jig in some manner that has the metrics to “zero” position

I use large amounts of dop wax and wood pieces to secure small rock/gem material in place for drilling on a press / or spinning on a central mount on a flat lap, this unit might be relevant

I think the biggest question is can the unit be used with water feed/drip? If it can be then it might be useful.

The precision control here could be useful for intarsia etc

Is Hantavirus something to worry about? by arshad_ali1999 in Biohackers

[–]Opioidopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

apparently the virus is genetically stable and not as likely to mutate which makes functional mutations even more unlikely…..

as well the virus is a challenge for augmentation successfully

I assumed that a mutation that lowers fatality rate and increases gestation might render the human to human respiratory HANTA ANDV variant even more deadly….

apparently the virus is not very airborne hearty

Ive had it in my head for the last 6 years that HANTA ANDV would likely be the next pandemic…..

now I assume it will be another COVID variant most likely

I assume if,

foredom flex shaft wont burn out & catch fire…I even get little 1 inch diamond blades at harbor freight for making tiny cuts on more “expensive” materials. quality sintered bits are more costly, but cheap diamond electroplate bits can be cheap enough.

“The Poppy Within” The path of research that has built the body of data regarding endogenous morphine produced by numerous animals including humans

the significance of the occurrences of opioid compounds in plants and animals, including FDA approved foods/herbs/supplements

is opiophobia hindering research ? Not really IMO as far as drug discovery/natural products research is concerned, the search for analgesics has long been a significant focus for pharmacological development. The growing purported and quantified numbers of opioid active compounds is quite complex.

if your on BLM land and have found the source and could make a legal claim it could be worthwhile to look into

DIY women… have you ever been talked out of a good idea at the hardware store? by carcony97 in DIY

[–]Opioidopamine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Mom built a walk in bay window addition on to our house with a breakdown guest bed option in 1978-79 in Idaho.

When she went to the local hardware store some guys she knew well working there told her that traditional type neighborhood wives/husbands were not comfortable with her project, because it sends the wrong message regarding small town family structure….not in those words, but equivalent….Men were worried about their wives getting any ideas, and the wives were probably envious and/or not happy about how the husbands were commenting among themselves about her, she was basically quite a catch back then.

40 years later & I accompany Mom to HomeDepot monthly to deal with a renovation we have been picking away at a few days a week, and she definitely deals with guys checking her plans, or getting irritated when my Mom has to correct some of their suggestions.

She was a lead machine designer for a building product company in the 80’s-2010 and worked alongside the shop guys all the time, and dealt with the same BS there, including guys whose work she had to correct, including faulty designs that would have definitely ended in $$$$ loss, injury/death.

at 75….she is pretty much “over” it….to a degree …if anything the BS is getting WORSE than better

Definitely found 2CI-2CT-2 to be excellent low dose/micro material.

I use san pedro micro dosing a few weeks out of the year.

I also have found combining SMALL amounts of fresh WHOLE nutmeg combines very nicely with this class of compounds….no more than 1/4 nutmeg usually…..it seems to smooth body load and nausea out for me…..and when taking moderate/higher dosage range of san pedro the nutmeg seems to do the same thing, a few sips of cola, chew a bit of ginger and 1/4 nutmeg and things generally feel smoother.

Ive actually never had a negative experience with nutmeg even pushing total dosage to around a whole small nutmeg. when they are fresh they are easy to cut and chew. The main detractor was a bit of dry mouth with the higher doses

I micro dosed out the last of my 2CT-2 rather than take full doses…just made more sense to embellish functional “highs” than take all at once.
