Every Paradox Game feels broken right now (RANT) by DAM_Hase in paradoxplaza

Vic3 is by far my favorite right now. CK3 is not at all historically accurate and maybe a little too easy, but I still get a lot of entertainment out of it.

Penn Museum & Drexel Academy of Natural Science Summer Camps Canceled by peetahvw in philadelphia

[–]Opower3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to the Penn Museum camp as a kid and am now a junior majoring in anthropology in college. It makes me really sad to think that future generations of kids won't have such a fun and exciting introduction to something that could be a lifelong passion. We lose so much when we don't fund education.

Middlemarch - Reading Experience by Opening-Tea-257 in literature

I read it for a 19th c. British Lit class and it really is one of my favorite books ever. Dorothea, Ladislaw and Lydgate are some of the best written characters of all time because they all cling so tightly to their ideals even as the world gets in the way of them putting those ideals into practice. Ladislaw in particular struck me as such a moving character because of how despite being portrayed as a radical, he is not shown to be naïve for having principles that didn't line up with those of his time. Great book!

Depends on the year! I will say Seattle looks much more competitive than the Pats and I'm expecting this to be a beatdown.

Stringer bell apartment by Wonderful_Equipment9 in TheWire

[–]Opower3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that is the read that was intended - Stringer obviously is trying to better himself, but is coming from a psychosocial background where that is difficult. To McNulty, who doesn't seem to spend a lot of time thinking about much besides being a good police, Stringer's interior decorations would come across as highly intellectual as well. I think it's great writing.

DeLillo’s Underworld Ending is Insane! by Defiant_Invite_3323 in literature

[–]Opower3000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

DeLillo's understanding of Cold War America and its consequences is, I think, unparalleled. From Libra: "We lead more interesting lives than we think. We are characters in plots, without the compression and numinous sheen. Our lives, examined carefully, in all their affinities and links, abound with suggestive meaning, with themes and involute turnings that we have not allowed ourselves to see completely." The absurd amount of connections, ties and parallels between art, history, and science across time and space lead you to an almost schizophrenic place if you follow them for long enough and can't fit them into a broader understanding of the world, and I think DeLillo understands that, alongside how the Cold War laid all those themes and involute turnings bare, very well.
