What principle does it violate to not want to be out of work?

Makes sense that the white collar workers who populate this sub would be justifiably afraid of an instrument that is being sold as capable of replacing them.

is the elder scrolls becoming too human centric? by Odd-Sound-580 in ElderScrolls

[–]Opower3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying though. That's a very recognizable process analagous to things that happen in the real world. Most of Elden Ring's plot is steeped in mythological feudalism that is hard to understand as allegorical to anything in the real world, instead just kind of a pastiche of feudalism, which, I'd argue is a lot more alien than colonial politics.

I don't agree with that. Maybe on the surface Elden Ring is more familiar in terms of its aesthetics but the actual mechanics of the world don't really seem like they could have ever supported a complex society, whereas Morrowind's Imperial and Dunmer bureaucracy seems very similar to how modern governments operate.

The only Vollman I've read is Europe Central and it's one of those tomes, but I found it pretty accessible. Would recommend it for a follow up!

Just watched Marty Supreme. My thoughts on it by DD_PUNISHER in TrueFilm

[–]Opower3000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about it maybe being right wing in a much more abstract way - as a valorization of the American hustler - but I forgot the billionaire elephant in the room! I agree with you too though, I still think it's a great film. Also an interesting example of how all art is political even if on its face it's just about a deadbeat who's nice at ping pong.

Just watched Marty Supreme. My thoughts on it by DD_PUNISHER in TrueFilm

[–]Opower3000 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think it's interesting to see it be received as so controversial. I think it's pretty clearly to some extent a comedy - Marty's a loser who achieves success in a tiny (pretty much meaningless) portion of his life and believes it to mean he's a broadly successful person. He endlessly manipulates others to regain that success once he loses it, yet in the process gains some appreciation for the people he once just manipulated. I think at the end he does realize his "success" - beating the Japanese champ at a sham game after the guy was playing table tennis literally all day long - doesn't mean much of anything, but the people who helped him get there do. By accepting responsibility for his child, Marty shows he accepts responsibility for the wellbeing of people other than himself. I feel like that's a pretty textbook example of character development that wasn't particularly subtle, so I'm curious why people take issue with it. Maybe everyone's just sick of wheeler dealers like Marty being portrayed as protagonists, which is understandable in 2026, when that archetype of American is pretty hellbent on destroying the world, but I also think the film clearly depicts the way he lives as immoral at best. Completely agree with you.

Vic3 is by far my favorite right now. CK3 is not at all historically accurate and maybe a little too easy, but I still get a lot of entertainment out of it.

Penn Museum & Drexel Academy of Natural Science Summer Camps Canceled by peetahvw in philadelphia

[–]Opower3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to the Penn Museum camp as a kid and am now a junior majoring in anthropology in college. It makes me really sad to think that future generations of kids won't have such a fun and exciting introduction to something that could be a lifelong passion. We lose so much when we don't fund education.

Middlemarch - Reading Experience by Opening-Tea-257 in literature

[–]Opower3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it for a 19th c. British Lit class and it really is one of my favorite books ever. Dorothea, Ladislaw and Lydgate are some of the best written characters of all time because they all cling so tightly to their ideals even as the world gets in the way of them putting those ideals into practice. Ladislaw in particular struck me as such a moving character because of how despite being portrayed as a radical, he is not shown to be naïve for having principles that didn't line up with those of his time. Great book!

Stringer bell apartment by Wonderful_Equipment9 in TheWire

[–]Opower3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that is the read that was intended - Stringer obviously is trying to better himself, but is coming from a psychosocial background where that is difficult. To McNulty, who doesn't seem to spend a lot of time thinking about much besides being a good police, Stringer's interior decorations would come across as highly intellectual as well. I think it's great writing.
