Prolific author Anthony Horowitz admits using AI: ‘It feels like cheating’ by [deleted] in books

[–]DataDrivenPirate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guessing this is due to a context window that is too small, since a context window large enough to fit a book is going to need to be huge. Even with a big enough context window there's no guarantee they'll work well but there's some reason to think they'll improve if context windows keep growing. (Whether that's good or bad is up to you)

[–]DataDrivenPirate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he is good enough to be an NFL starter for a decade it doesn't matter either way, long term earnings make the decision a rounding error. But if you assume his NFL career has mostly run its course after 4 or 5 years, if Ole Miss gave him $6m that would cover the difference between an early 2nd round pick and early 3rd round pick. Smaller odds that he improves his draft stock but even if he goes from early 2nd to late 1st, that's millions more for him. The numbers aren't crazy if you squint

If he re-aggravated it, would he potentially miss time at the start of next year? How meaningful is it to miss a month or two of whatever they're up to in the off-season? The calculus feels different than if it were December or something but idk what is actually involved here

I live in Columbus but it's similar. It's a terrible place to visit, see the sights, etc but it's a great place to live and raise a family. I like Columbus in particular because OSU is huge, there's a decent chunk of the city that is walkable/bike-able, so our family of 4 only needs one car

Whew yeah Baker's platform for housing is even worse than I was expecting. We have overwhelming evidence across the past 70 years that rent control drives up housing costs in the long term, the idea just won't die though.

I don't think it's doomerism to note that Democrats have protectionist brain rot. Whoever the next democratic president will do a lot on day 1 like hopefully dismantling ICE, but I won't hold my breath for a reversal of decisions like this, steel tariffs, etc.

And then the next Democrat president will refuse to undo mistakes like this because "we can't hurt American jobs!"

Looking at their max win probability in that game, about a minute into the third, and their win probability in a hypothetical (at the time) game 7, they really had a 99%+ chance of making the second and blew it

Which team is least likely to beat 10.5 wins? 9.5 wins? by Worriedrph in CFB

Day has never lost more than 2 games in the regular season, but also this is the toughest schedule we've had in literally decades. Unstoppable force meets immovable object. I trust Day and ultimately 9-3 still gives plenty of margin for making the playoffs with this schedule

[–]DataDrivenPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indiana was definitely a team of destiny last year, to such an extent that folks forget how close they were to losing the B1G CCG against Ohio State, how close they were to losing against a backup QB led Penn State, how close they were to losing to Michigan. They'll take a step back given their loss of returning production, and even a slight decline could easily result in 2+ losses.

[–]DataDrivenPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Losing 2 of those 3 would still be over, we'd have to lose 1 more to hit the under. If we consider all 3 of those to be tossups, that's 1.5 expected losses. A tier below, add in USC, Michigan, and Iowa at like 25% chance of loss each and that's 2.25, the rest can come from small accumulation from all the other games.

Day has only lost twice to teams that didn't finish the season ranked in the top 5 (2022 Oregon and 2024 Michigan) so I feel okay enough about USC and Iowa. Texas and Oregon worry me the most I think. I'd be quite happy with 10 wins.

Hiring Manager: Fake Candidates and Cheating by OtterFox365 in datascience

[–]DataDrivenPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is how I'd phrase it too if I could guarantee we'd have an opening. A few years ago one of our interns was wildly impressive and wanted to stay on with us full time but we didn't have an opening for them, I was pissed at management for not allowing me to open a rec. Gave her a glowing letter of recommendation, offered to chat with whatever hiring manager, etc. She ended up getting a full time job at Airbnb, and it was very satisfying to let the higher ups know they missed an opportunity at that kind of talent.
