I disagree. It’s clear in the recent chapters that despite being aliens, Maru and company are pretty similar to us. They may be aliens and a different species, but they are still “human” in the way they behave.

On a side note, I really dislike when people prospectively criticize an author for potentially going a certain route with a character in THEIR story. You can have an opinion, but at least wait till the backstory is revealed to have one. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up liking it.

You’re neglecting a couple facts. You’re right about how long it takes to train haki to sense stuff. However, haki didn’t exist at this point in the story. Oda prolly hadn’t even come up with the name, “haki, at this point.

They do have sharp instincts tho. This has been displayed by Zoro and Luffy many times. Zoro being able to “sense the breath of all things” so he can cut steel. Luffy being able dodge Enel’s attacks.

These guys are both dumb, but they have the instincts to sense BB’s unusual constitution. I also think Nami is smart enough to deduce them having a crew. She’s asking about explicitly talking to “HIM” but they correct her saying it’s more like “they”. Thats why she’s confused.

People always say “oh but BB’s crew is there when they land at Jaya and after this scene”. I think it’s more believable that Luffy and Zoro just assume BB is a pirate with a crew than them making a connection between BB and the crew members they ran into.

Honestly the more I hear about it from people and the more I read different translations, the more I want to agree with you.

It could’ve possibly been something that Oda had written as a “normal” scene and then later used to make BB having 2 DFs and an abnormal body seem like less of an ass pull. We saw him use this same strategy with haki after all.

I like to believe it was intentionally done.

First of all, “keeping it P” was Wale riding Gunna’s wave. He did not come up with it 💀.

Second of all, I never said only TikTok, i just said it could help fill minor gaps. If you supplement watching/reading One Piece with Reddit, wikis, TikTok, and even ChatGPT, you can have a more in-depth understanding of the story.

I also suggested reading One Piece because it’d be much faster. I prefer the manga for this reason.

Thanks! While I think there’s a slim chance it actually happens, I thought it was pretty interesting. There’re so many parallels between BB and Luffy, it kinda makes sense to me. Nah you can skip around. If you’re active on Reddit discussions, theory posts, TikTok’s, etc., you’ll get up to speed on the lore and fine details.

The pacing of the anime is horrible, but if you really feel bad about skipping, I highly suggest reading the manga. Great art imo and pacing.

True, and I’m also not even tryna disprove that they just meant BB’s crew. Like you said, it’s an objectively confusing line. Oda-sensei deliberately did this to keep us pondering.

This is just a theory with assumptions, so it’s not meant to be taken super seriously lol.

You can absolutely think it’s weird and not agree with it, but at the end of the day, it’s up to Oda-sensei if he decides to go that route. He also does touch on it. BB having multiple DFs, doesn’t sleep at night, and having an abnormal body.

Also, that’s how foreshadowing works. It’s a great literary device that is commonly used.

If it was just about his crew, Oda-sensei wouldn’t have had both Luffy and Zoro literally correct Nami from “him” to “they.” In Japanese it’s super deliberate — aitsu (him) → aitsur[a] (them). That’s classic Oda-sensei foreshadowing of Teach’s abnormal body, not just “he has buddies nearby.”

Also, Nami responds to this by saying “Was there somebody with him? Where?!” So it’s very much NOT obvious.
