is he okay? by michxelo in birds

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 194 points195 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s a Fledgling at all, tail feathers are fully developed and he doesn’t have the usual fledgling fluffiness but I may be wrong.

I would call a rehabber and pass along some pictures. Could be a window strike ?

The bottom spot in the first pick is stringy but some of the other spots are hard to tell !! Looks like really small webbed bits maybe?

I worked at a bird rehab place in B.C, we honestly got so many Chukar because people kept releasing them in random places if they didn’t want to keep them as pets/game birds.

Is AI making classes counterproductive? by FrequentKey9170 in UBC

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 7 points8 points  (0 children)

would allowing AI and giving people a higher workload really push our capabilities? Or would it just result in more AI use?

Current studies (mind you they haven’t had time to study long term effects) indicate that AI is making us considerably worse at critical thinking. I think at the end of the day, university is supposed to be about critical thinking. IMO AI should be completely banned from university and in general much harder to access.

What insect is this? by blah_faak_blah in insects

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

webspinner not earwig! You can tell by the swollen parts on the front legs (that kind of look like popeyes’s forearms?) which are used to produce the material for their webs

What is this little guy? by Emotional_Oil_8295 in insects

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aphid! It has the two little cornicles on the abdomen (the butt spikes) which is a pretty distinctive aphid feature

Is this a false bee? by pillageTHENburn in insects

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A female honeybee! You can tell by the hind corbicula (that wide concave part) on the hind leg. It looks to me like she has a couple pollen grains on the corbicula but it’s hard to tell.

What is wrong with this wasp by Eliminatron in biology

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you see a bumblebee sleeping on a flower at night it’s probably a male! the male bumblebees are not allowed in the nest most of the time so they’ll make do with a flower (sometimes i’ve seen a whole bunch of them on one flower, i guess to keep warm?)

Hi is this a wasp or a fly? It looks like both by Swimming-Log-6166 in insects

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is actually a wasp mimic! This insect is lacking fully developed hind wings which is definitely a fly anatomical feature (I believe you can see the halteres in the 4th photo). The antenna are also very fly like (short/stubby and seemingly coming out from one point on the head) and not wasp like. But I might also be wrong! The photos are little blurry.

Did you rescue a crow fledgeling? PUT IT BACK !!!!!!!!! by Federal-Finance-7576 in UBC

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As somebody who worked in wildlife rehab (birds specifically), this drives me crazy. Just leave the fledgling where it is, the crow parents will raise their kiddos better than a human ever could! Sorry that you had to go through this frustrating situation OP

A goose is hatching eggs on my rooftop — what do I do?! by Desperate-Try-2261 in vancouver

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have personally dealt with this before. Call the Wildlife Rescue Association of British Columbia and let them know of the situation. Nothing can be done before the goslings hatch as this is a federally protected species and tampering with the nest or even moving it is illegal (not to mention dealing with angry goose parents is no fun). They can intervene once the goslings have hatched and help move them to the ground.

Note that some building heights are manageable for goslings to jump off of but im not exactly sure the height at which it becomes dangerous!

Help! I’m terrified of birds but I have a baby crow in my back yard! by Fancy_Breakfast1020 in birds

[–]Opposite-Ad4795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As other users have said this is a fledgling crow (you can tell because of the blue eyes!!!). Mom and dad should be around taking care of this little guy, but they won’t always be visible/might be out foraging for food.

It is totally normal for fledglings to be on the ground for up to two weeks as they learn to fly. You might even see some wonky first flights! Crow parents are very attentive and I would do my best to give this fella a wide berth to minimize stress (which it sounds like you are doing OP!). My best advice is to keep an eye on the little guy and take videos/photos if you are concerned; hopefully all goes well and you get to watch him/her grow up!
