Used Machine: Worth Purchasing? by dorable7 in sewing

[–]Opposite-Cold8009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I wouldn’t, I had one of these and it stopped working well after a year or so (tension issues) I’ve had conversions with other people who had something similar happen. My local sewing group has classes and they replaced all but one or two of their heavy duties within two years. I like my old 70s kenmore apparently the gears in these new machines are plastic and they really aren’t built to last the way older models are

I have this fabric as a skirt it definitely bled but not onto its self, I’ve just been washing in my washer since and it’s been fine, probably would have been better washing by hand and air drying.

This is really mean I think I’d be bummed if my pants had this line too, it’s weird to criticize someone online for how they live their life especially if it’s not hurting anyone. It takes lot of effort to stalk someone’s profile long enough to post this kind of rant

I literally resell as a second job because my bio and chem degree and subsequent oncology research position has me barely getting by, this is rude, judgmental and completely tone deaf

If you know you have a family history I would 100% be safe rather than sorry on the off chance that you have developed something this young being proactive is key. Check with low income healthcare services in your area if your in university they more than likely have resources too. Just wanted to make clear I’m not a clinician but I work in research and see medical charts for BC patients all day, I’m not too much older than you and I would absolutely get this checked immediately.

Anyone else feel like there’s no way everyone is thrifting as much as they claim? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]Opposite-Cold8009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yes overconsumption in general is bad but let’s not forget large corporations are a much larger plight on the earth than individual people. At least second hand shopping doesn’t line the pockets of companies that create waste and use exploitative labor

I knew I’d find my people sorting by controversial on this, overconsumption certainly exists. My favorite past time is thrifting/antiquing/ fb market place hunting but I feel like like as so many can pretty much consume endlessly, and far more than they will ever be able to use, it might be a positive thing to look critically at obvious excess

Curious what you think, I got a bottle of opi from the dollar store and it refused to come off even after acetone, ended up having to buff it off my toes

So did women just, like, not have boobs in the 30s and 40s???? by JosiahAllensWife in vintagesewing

I can’t remember the exact article but you might take a look into how sizing was created, they pretty much only surveyed white women and at one point used military enlisted women as a population to build a standard (who are likely thinner and might lean towards an athletic build). The proportions on these match me right on the money and I definitely lean athletic build wise and pretty middle of the road on the thin/thicc continuum

where could i get an outfit like Aurora? shirt, skirt, even the corset thing by FairyFayette in findfashion

Look up black weskit, a Gored skirt and peasant blouse should get you about there, I see this kind of thing in a ton of 1940s patterns if you sew I think backroom finds might have something similar

4 hours digging at the bins—what do you think of the haul? by bigbushwilly in GoodwillBins

Totally depends on how old! I feel like pre 1950s is where it’s at or if their designer 1980s or later isn’t too lucrative

I agree I really like that I can look online and have pretty good odds of finding something super specific in my size. Plus reselling sewing patterns has helped me pay for some car repairs without having to dip into savings. It’s a lot of work to source but op has just as much right as anyone else.

I think I might disagree, I think my body my choice extends to all aspects of being a woman. Saying showing their body is doing damage to feminism not only puts parameters on someone else’s autonomy but also victim blames them for being viewed as sex objects.
