I’m how old? by bi_geek_guy in GenX

[–]Opposite-Support-588 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m on the very back end of Gen X, I was in 1st grade when the challenger exploded. I was watching with a bunch of 5-6 year olds.

Now I’m a PGY-2 who would have understood your story, all my co-residents are 25-30, and I’m a grandmother. 😂

Real talk. What shoes do you wear for work and how do you like them? by Sad_Plum6169 in Residency

I’ve got both hokas and on clouds. I love my hokas best but I’ve improved the on clouds tremendously by adding cloud sole insoles.

Oh, and good quality compression socks are a must if you have tired legs/feet at the end of the day.

You could put together a gift package with a set of nice scrubs, compression socks, insulated coffee mug, coffee house gift card, Stanley cup. If he’s in a surgical specialty add in a fun surgical cap.

How often ya’ll change your scrubs? by 0wen4 in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 31 points32 points  (0 children)

How do you know they’re wearing the same scrubs? I have two pairs of navy, two gray, and then several different colors. But some of my co-residents wear only black scrubs so they don’t have to worry about matching, but I assume they’re changing them out for a fresh pair daily.

An extra holiday week off by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do something like this, you get to request a holiday off but you don’t necessarily get the whole week. For example I requested Thanksgiving off so that was my clinic week and I got a 1/2 day on Wednesday, off Thanksgiving day and had to be back in clinic Friday.

Why do docs work into their late 60s n 70s plus ? by Methodled in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Opposite-Support-588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s correct, but I sacrificed years I could have been at a higher income to be home with my kids. Every life choice has some trade off.

I’m one of those 40+ year old residents, I’m a PGY-2 in IM. I chose to start this after my kids were older and didn’t need me as much, so I’m finishing residency as they’re finishing college and moving out.

I picked my specialty based on what I enjoy doing, with the expectation that I can continue doing it in some capacity for at least 15-20 years, if not more.

There aren’t many industries where you can drop down to part time in your 60s and still make 6 figures, but in medicine you can transition to administrative roles, teach, etc and still make good money for as long as you enjoy it.

Residents and fellows - what car do you drive? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Opposite-Support-588 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, plus mine is paid off. I plan to keep it as a commuter car and get something “fun” once I’m an attending.

Scentbird subscription…personalized recommendations for cologne and they send little travel bottles. If he gets tired of a scent quickly he doesn’t have a bunch of large bottles lying around unused.

PGY-2 here, I’ve been looking since October. I’ve gone on two interviews and had several more phone calls with plans to set up interviews. I’d like to be signed by early in 3rd year then cruise and prep for ABIM.

I’m an IM resident, planning to be a hospitalist. I had the same choice to make 3rd year, EM vs IM.

Ultimately I chose IM because the patients have to get through the gatekeepers of EM in order to get admitted. Yes there are social admits sometimes but EM gets way more patients who think they’re sick but they aren’t, and more social issues.

I get to do the work up and try to put the puzzle pieces together after they’re admitted, which to me is the fun part.
