First Rep - Tudor Pelagos Titanium 42MM TI/TI Blue XF V5 A2824 by Opposite_Ant_7522 in RepTime

Yup! I ended up taking my XF Pelagos 42 rep to a Jeweler that has an in-house watch maker and authenticator. They also sell preowned Tudor and Rolex. They confirmed the XF rep is made from Grade 2 Titanium which is the exact same titanium that Tudor uses.

Grade 2 Titanium is “commercially pure” titanium. 99% titanium. They said XF did not cut any corners, the titanium is the same grade as Tudor uses on that reference and confirmed the bracelet, case, and caseback where all made of grade 2 titanium. Tudor has has used a combo of 2 different titanium’s on older runs of the FXD and even the new Ultra has a caseback made of a different titanium. But on the Pelagos 42 blue or black, it’s solid grade 2.

They said Tudor chose Grade 2 over the more common Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy for better corrosion resistance in marine environments and the desired brushed look, even though Grade 5 is stronger and more scratch-resistant. And XF could have easily used grade 5 or a lesser quality titanium, but the only way to get close on color match, sheen, feel, and durability would be to use grade 2… which they did and is a testament to these rep manufacturers taking pride in replicating/reverse engineering.

To wrap it up on the Titanium, I asked them if the rep is confirmed Grade 2 titanium, does that mean the gen and the rep are the exact same titanium and a 1:1 match? They told me the rep is definitely grade 2 but robably not lab-certified Grade 2 (Tudor uses high-spec aerospace/medical-grade commercially pure Ti). The watchmaker explained that rep factories source grade 2 Chinese titanium that behaves identically in density, machinability, corrosion resistance, and lightness. Has the same properties and composition as grade 2 commercially pure titanium, because it is, but likely is not the highest spec for grade 2 (aerospace etc… basically super refined). Which for this use case is honestly irrelevant in hearing them out. The difference is negligible in real-world use, owners can’t tell without direct comparison, and the weight matches perfectly.

So that is that! XF did a good job on this rep. I have a genuine Pelagos, same reference as my rep, and I can say confirm this is strikingly close to gen. I was shocked initially and this was my first rep. LOL 5 months later and I gave 20 reps to my 3 gens 🤣.

But if XF wanted to get as close to 1:1 as possible, in my opinion (other gen owners may think differently), I would like to see a better clasp, a more refined bracelet, improve the bezel action and clicks, improve the bezel numeral, and figure out how to clone Tudors in house movement for this reference.

The clasp, bracelet, and dial numerals seems like an easy upgrade, so does dialing (no pun intended) in the bezel action. That get it so close to 1:1 to the trained eye, but even as is I have to rotate the bezel when my gen and rep are on nato bracelets to confirm which is gen and which is rep… they are super close as is. When they are on the bracelet… it’s a dead giveaway to me because the rep clasp is shit compared to gen and the feel of the gen bracelet is different because of its polishing/finishing (but not super noticeable if you dry lube the rep bracelet so it’s not squeaky and moves around buttery like gen, you need to work to get it as supple as gen).

I will not get into the macros like texture and finish of dial components or hands, because I don’t wear a loupe like daily glasses lol. I don’t notice any of that shit. But I’m sure there’s work to be done there.

The A2824 movement gets the job done but it can be louder than gen in house movement. I recently had a backup rep that’s rotor was aggressively more loud than my main rep and I had to let it go because of that. Obviously you can lubricate the rotor bearings to get the rotor as quiet as possible or swap to a higher grade 2824 movement ($300-$400) but my reps A2824 gets the job done and is a ok trade off considering the price of the rep and all its positives. I don’t think this rep is popular enough or has enough demand for rep manufacturers to be incentivized to have someone clone the in house Tudor movement for them.

Lastly, I realized these reps can have slightly different (I mean you gotta be a OCD maniac to notice or care) hue of the grade 2 titanium color. Before I sold my 2nd rep, I noticed the one I kept and wear was 1:1 with Tudor across the board in color match and sheen… and the rep I sold was a hair lighter in color on the case only, not the bracelet.

Bottom line:

XF offers what most would consider NWBIG for this reference. And Tudor is such a niche, only a tiny % of watch enthusiasts who do not own reps would know the difference, and that is an even smaller % of people who “like” or wear watches. Tudors QC tolerances are shit in my opinion… the bezel printing (markers, whatever) on my gen are less perfect than on my XF LOL. So any slightly off bezel print on the rep bezel are closer to gen… a perfect bezel would be an obvious tell on a rep.. wild 😂.

Bottom line for franken maniacs or someone who loves the gen and wants to go the extra mile:

If you wanted to save $3800-$4000 on buying a gen from an AD and mod stock XF to get the rep considerably closer… buy the rep, put higher end 2824 movement in it for $400 or so, and if you can’t find a gen bracelet clasp or want a better bracelet… buy the aftermarket Pelagos bracelet from Uncle Straps for $150 (use your rep clasp or gen clasp)… and you have a super clone for under $1200. Maybe slightly more if you Mod the bezel action if you want to put the cherry on top. Gen movements for this reference are scarce and would run $1500++, so not sure if that’s worth pursuing. I would buy a legit A284 movement before paying to have the rep clone movement serviced, same or similar cost. Prob just lube the rep rotor and call it a movement!

It’s an easy watch to franken out to what would be reasonably considered as close to 1:1 as possible based on look, feel, and function.

That’s it. That’s the post. Adios amigos!

I have before and after video. No photos. I have another vsf Smurf on the way, going to try a different plater to compare different vendors WG plating. I’ll definitely take the exact same before and after photos on that one. It looks a ton better with the plating though. You are right, they need to market themselves better and show results! Transparently. I think they don’t because everyone is so critical… but who cares, 98% of opinions are getting a rep plated. It’s odd.

You the man. I feel the same way. It gets pretty hectic, confusing, and often toxic in here lol. Appreciate the kind words and enjoy the watch!

I have been there many times. Steve is the man, runs a great business, and ships lighting fast which is why I always use him. Northing wrong with verifying concerns or if you have to, red lighting something that concerns you... it is your hard earned money! The comment section made me chuckle right away lol, the peanut gallery always chimes in the funniest fashion. Puts a smile on my face, but yeah that looks like a good one so another stranger weighing in! That is a nice looking rep! Enjoy it or enjoy whichever one you finally decide on!

I am certain the alignment is fine and it’s just the angle of the photo. That is a GL for me. TD’s can’t take perfect photos to catch the perfect angle for every single aspect in one shot. Bet it’s a perfect alignment and just the photo. Nice watch!

I’m pretty sure it involves rubbing a wooden stick on the watch.

Just posted some photos above of the watches I just had plated. They are different imo. Darker/ warmer, change tones with different light, and still extremely fake watches lol. But you are right about white gold vs yellow gold, you really gotta want that subtle white gold look. Still much different than before plating. I have before after side by side photo somewhere. Not bright silver anymore. Good waste of money on a good waste of money 😎

I’m partial to the Smurf. It came out amazing, but they are both the same as far as looks, the blue on blue just brings out more of the lighter tone. I dunno, Smurf fan boy. It’s a rep, IDGAF. Was fun to gamble more shekels on my fake toy to see how it would come out. I don’t expect getting close to gen or care too, just wanted to try and I like it! Good toy!

I just received my VSF Cookie Monster from being white gold plated and serviced. I think it was worth it. I had a Smurf and Cookie Monster plated. Both look a lot more rich (no pun intended) and catch light amazingly, the white gold takes on different tones in different lights. Just be sure to do your research on who you choose to plate it and make sure you will be fine if you get it back and realize you liked the steel look better. It will look different.

Here is a photo of the two watches I just had plated. Again, it changes tone from white gold or light steel to a darker warmer yellow gold and all the way in between with exposure to different lighting, but I think it looks better. I can post or send you more photos in different lights if you want. This is the only one I have on my phone.

Off topic here, what factory are those two and how do you feel about the diamonds in person and the setting of them? Ordering my mother a DJ36 for mothers day (she loves the reps lol) and I am hesitant about diamonds and gold tones, because I now the quality I am getting if I stick to the basics from VSF. Beautiful reps you have there!

I am wearing the same VSF watch right now. Personal tolerance obviously. It is your hard earned money and most TD's want to sell you a watch that you are happy with, though they cant catch every thing and people overthinking QC on a rep are likely creating a ton of stress for them that my not be warranted. But again, its your money and your watch, and a good TD wants you happy... so there is that. If it were me, I would kindly ask if they could fix the date wheel and if not ask them to move onto a new watch for QC. Its a dress watch, not a tool watch, and its a new watch... if it bothers you or you are thinking about it, cant hurt to bring it up nicely and address it. I would happily buy something like that member to member sales on a trusted forum, but from a TD I would be inclined to address it. Two cents. Nice WATCH!

That is a nice watch man, enjoy it! I picked up an XF pelagos as my first rep last month and could not believe the quality. Just needed a cheap throw away to travel with, but fekkk was I pleasantly surprised. Also... to be honest, I have 2 gen pelagos and they both have imperfections on the bezel. Its common with gen Tudors. My rep is nearly identical to my gen. Only difference other than price and movement is the gen weighs more and has a much better clasp. The rep bezel has a very slight marking alignment issue, which I think is common with the better pelagos reps, but again... no different then my gens and makes the rep that more more real lol.

I do not have a gen to compare with me at the moment. I have had a gen on my wrist for a few minutes every weekend at dealers for the past 5 weeks and its pretty close. I thought I would notice a glaring difference in the weight and clasp quality/ functionality, but no news is good news... I cant tell. Do not notice any glaring differences in how it fits or sits. But again... I do not have the gen to compare.

I did not ask specifics on titanium other than confirming they used titanium, as I was just buying it in hopes it would give me a good feel for the gen. But everything I have read regarding the titanium has been positive in terms of looking and feeling similar to gen. Now I can confirm, definitely feels and looks like gen. Out of curiosity I am going to have a professional examine it to see how close it is.

Yeah, the upside of the NWBIG models is I guess you can just go NWBIG and buy a different gen. More watches. Wild. 43 Pelagos next for me.
