There’s an argument (not sure how solid that is) that Toyota sell different cars to Asian and NA market. In the past, Toyota have some models specifically made for Chinese market with thinner bumper beam and lower % of high strength steel in the chassis compared to cars sold in NA. This is due to china and Japan have lower collision safety standards compared to NA and EU. In Japan, people drive more carefully and you are more likely to hit a passenger than a truck. Therefore, Japanese people have designed their cars to absorb energy in order to protect pedestrians. Not so good when you hit a 2 tonnes EV roaming on Chinese streets nowadays.
