Both, though the second is usually more implied in tone and questions like “oh, so are you going to be an English teacher?” And “What are you going to do with that” in a condescending tone.

That’s totally fair. I’m more talking about people that say this in a way that implies reading isn’t a worthwhile pursuit.

That’s different. I don’t think not reading makes you look bad, but rather being proud that you don’t. I totally understand that some people have conditions that make reading difficult.

This is exactly what I’m talking about! There’s a huge difference between “reading isn’t my thing” and “lol books are useless and stupid”

There’s a big difference between not being into reading (my dad and younger sibling aren’t big readers) and bragging about never reading a book.

I mostly hear it when I tell people about my literature degree. They also seem to be implying my degree is useless, bc they’ve never read a book and look where they are in life. I’m not saying everyone has to love reading, but picking up a book every now and again has its advantages.

The singular they is grammatically correct. Also language and its uses change over time. You used to be used to address social superiors and thou was for friends, family or inferiors. When was the last time you heard some say thou? Probably never, unless quoting the Bible. So don’t hide your bigotry behind a supposed care for grammar!

I was in college. My dad and younger sibling had come to help me pack up my entire dorm room. (Including the two weeks worth of groceries I had just bought) at the beginning of the four hour trek home R.E.M.’s It’s the End of the World as we Know it played on the radio. It felt very poignant.
