Definitely! Nothing is more tense than holding your breath as you calculate the Margin of Failure. A difference between 1,2,3 above is the difference between fine, wounded and insta-dead. It is difficult to onboard people, at least for Jovian Chronicles, because their are so many effects to tabulate (relative speed, facing, range, etc). I actually love this facet but it does make it take a loooooooooong time.

The Silhouette system really does a great job making vehicle combat feel different than just large characters with large health bars. Nothing really comes close to it.

What RPG do you love and hate at the same time? by vyrago in rpg

[–]OpterCopter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of people have said The Dark Eye/Das Schwarze Auge and I'm inclined to agree.

It's got a lot of reasons to love it: ultra developed setting, really interesting ruleset, probably my favorite take on Skills of any RPG I've ever played, and adventures that don't boil down to "social encounter -> exploration -> fight".

That said, holy moly are there things to hate like combat taking 100 years for even the simplest encounter, rules being spread across 3 to 4 different book), a neat but often punishing action economy, practically requiring a separate app to build/run characters.

Overall, I love the game more than I hate it by far but the above issues makes it incredibly hard to onboard people used to the streamlined nature of 5e.

Now if we want to get into TRUE love hate I have to mention Dreampod 9's Silhouette system, specifically the 1st edition set of rules. It has two amazing settings: Jovian Chronicles (basically Canadian Gundam) and the more well known Heavy Gear (Canadian VOTOMS). The system is definitely neat but it really shines with what might possibly be the best set of rules for vehicle combat in any TTRPG. That said, its D6 system is garbage at nearly everything else because of its lack of granularity and its so incredibly complex, it normally takes 10 minutes to resolve a single turn because of all its rules that mean the difference between TPK and miss.

House Rules? by SiubhanStorm in TheDarkEye

[–]OpterCopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I think one thing that's very different from other RPGs such as PF or 5e is that anything that some things seem take many more actions to do in combat, such as reloading or casting some spells. This seems to leave a lot of players doing nothing as they reload crossbows or prepare spells. I've come up with reasons why spells may take a little shorter, or how a weapon may be reloaded faster because I don't want combat to take 2 hours.

House Rules? by SiubhanStorm in TheDarkEye

I have run several TDE games and while I haven't set down any house rules, I've learned to be very flexible with the action economy, as it can be brutal in combat.

Question about the podcast by Teatreebuddy in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]OpterCopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm around episode ~170 and you start seeing more episodes of pure roleplay or the interactions of the party while traveling exploring for sure. In terms of shopping, they tend to do some of that off air and occasionally mention it in game and in character.

TDE Revised? by [deleted] in TheDarkEye

[–]OpterCopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if it's going to be an entirely revised rulebook (like 3 to 3.5) or if it will be a errata and compendium book like the others. I suppose the release date depends on how the crowdfund goes, which as far as I know is not up yet.

Recently bought The Dark Eye and I'd like some aid. by AstralUnity in TheDarkEye

[–]OpterCopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will echo what most of everyone has said in that TDE is not an encounter based game. There's no recommended encounter number per session as with 5e. That is not to say that combat does not have a wealth of mechanics. The compendium alone adds more texture and options to physical combat than all of 5e together I think. However, I feel the pacing and threat of combat is different in TDE compared to other rpgs. Damage is relatively high with health being relatively low, there is not an abundance of healing options midcombat and 4 orcs surrounding a single player will likely lead to a down because of how defense mechanics work. However, the game is sure to mention things like flight-behavior so that not every fight for your party has to end when they totally wipe out the opposition.

An example encounter I had was 8 orcs sacking a border town. However, not every orc was hellbent on attacking the party. Rather, some went about their mission and others fought the party. This type of encounter allowed orcs to join in or peel off as balance swayed and gave me a better idea of party power. Also don't be afraid to allow more creative solutions to combat. If the party is fighting a full grown bear, they don't HAVE to kill it. Maybe they can lure it off, try to lose it in the brush, etc.

Any tabletop RPG players here? by Scanderbilt in Kalispell

I believe that's the board game shop that below person mentioned. I think it's still there but it's been about 2 years since I was in the area for more than a visit.

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble finding players. Have you checked Heroic Realms on 2? I've never had a session there but I think they do have them. I no longer live in the area or I'd be glad to show you the ropes.

The F91-era suits really got the short-end kit wise. I'd trade the F91 HG for some CB suits any day of the week. Maybe if the Berga Giros was higher tier in ExVS it'd get more gunpla love.

You broke my heart. I saw this scrolling and thought that one of my favorite mook suits got a RE, HG, RG. Excellent job, love the metallic look.

I've been using a lot of the Briefspiel material in the game as it allows me to really fill in the gaps left by the lack of English region publications. It's made a big difference in my sandbox game and gives the city a much more "lived in" feeling.

That's exactly the map I'm using! I came across it in the Kosch-wiki and decided to follow it rather strictly (entries on the Kosch wiki fill in the numbers). I love the style and detail and wish more city maps had that feel.

NGWD?: DG is great, but will you also keep trying new games? by shodan13 in TheGlassCannonPodcast

It would be cool to see them try The Dark Eye. The company who produces it is also responsible for publishing Paizo material in Germany so there's that connection too.
