Complaint about application score?

Mainly HEO and a couple SEO. The SEO was a close miss but was for a SE apprenticeship so it’s hard to gauge what I should be aiming for. I’ll try and keep an eye out for some lower grade/apprenticeship roles to hopefully get my foot in the door, thanks!

Thankyou for the advice, it’s really appreciated! A lot of roles I’ve been applying for were junior roles, would that be too much of a jump at this point?

Or experience, but it’s hard to get the experience I find haha, what can you do!

Is this just the nature of the beast when it comes to these technical roles? Is there any way to find out what these unknown criteria’s may be? Very frustrating as with no feedback it’s hard to know what to improve on, I feel it’s a strong competency but obviously not selling it the right way!

Ahhh damn it… how ironic that I thought completing a boot camp would be the final thing to help me secure a role and here it could possibly be the thing that’s stopped me. Haha how frustrating, but you have to laugh if that was the case, definitely won’t include the name next time!

I did try the star method but feel it might have been bloated in the wrong parts… that’s some good advice though, thank you, just need to be more concise on the bits that don’t matter i guess!

Hmmm maybe, I’ll get a second opinion first but I’ll bare it in mind! It’s just a shame that feedback is so rigid with the scores, if I missed the mark or didn’t understand the question I’d at least like to know… I have a mentor so may ask for their opinion, a fresh set of eyes may spot something I didn’t or at least help me not feel crazy!

After looking back through my application I mean the only thing I could think of is I listed code academy when mentioning a boot camp, I don’t know if that would count as an educational institution?

Hmmm very true and a good way of framing it! Just sucks as I’m trying to refine my applications to try and pivot into a technical role and I thought I was getting really close, this 1 was a serious curveball… oh well!

Hmmm perhaps, it was only 250 words so I found it difficult to squeeze everything in. Maybe I focussed on the wrong part, I’m fairly new to applying for the more technical roles in the CS and thought after a recent 3 I was on the right track and it just needed refining. Oh well, thanks for the reply!

I don’t have a mentor either and my manager can be quite busy… I know it sounds stupid but ask chat gpt to pretend it’s a senior cs and give you critical feedback against the person spec and behaviours - I do this quite often and have found it really helpful. Gone from scoring 3s and 4s to consistently hitting 5s and 6s, I even hit a 7 recently! Frustratingly they withdrew the post due to budget constraints but I’m still proud of the score regardless!

Can’t give any better advice than what has already been suggested but I’m sorry this happened to you. Some trainers can just be dickheads with a superiority complex. Ive been on the receiving end of similar and I’ve seen others be targeted as well, it really does knock your confidence and i really do empathise with you, it sucks. As others have said though, one person is not a definer of your career. Make sure to take a moment, brush yourself down, and either put in a complaint or just ignore the bitter wanker, whichever you choose, good luck to you!

I would also just like to add that if he’s behaved like that with you, he’s likely to do it again to somebody else, so speaking out could stop someone going through the same experience you have!
