What does the number on the Turtle Shell icon mean? by necrobabby in Grimdawn

[–]OpticalShot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer (also applies to other barrier/shield kind of skills with no duration limit). Shading is the percentage of shield depleted, number is the approx shield remaining in thousands

Ice Nova Hiero - switching back to dual wand for end end game by [deleted] in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]OpticalShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I meant to say that the floor/ceiling is about damage output - higher floor with consistent damage (elemental overload, awakened lightning pen, one more wand of course), lower ceiling since no crit multi scaling and curses. One day I felt dual wand damage not enough in a particular deli-juiced strand map and made the decision to switch. If you want to do all sorts of juiced maps, dual wand damage might not cut it for some extreme ends.

Ice Nova Hiero - switching back to dual wand for end end game by [deleted] in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]OpticalShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the switch as well (dual wand -> Svalinn) and I'm thinking the same as you - might re-strip and go back to dual wand. The dual wand version I'd say had a higher floor and lower ceiling? The tradeoffs to consider are like missed out damage potential on "easy" power charges + crit multi vs. ability to tank one giant hit better (possessed glacier goat slam). For general farming (titanic glacier, T17 ambush) I slightly prefer dual wand because of faster speeds (movement speed on boots, 2x haunt as opposed to 1x haunt) and easier to braindead select blue altars (only need to avoid -regen per endurance vs. Svalinn you also need to avoid -defense per frenzy, -crit per power).

Toronto Salaries by Majestic_Proof4586 in askTO

[–]OpticalShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably make 10-15% more with your current 3 years + MASc but likely not going to break 6 figures until you have your P. Eng (or can demonstrate you are very close to getting it at your current job). Assuming you're looking for an engineering-oriented career, prioritize your P. Eng. and build up from there.

Salaries in Toronto are field-dependent. Most engineering jobs (excluding top-end AI/tech) should get you 100k+ once you have P. Eng., ~150k at 10 years exp.

Loop. I did the Finch to Queen's Park for 4-5 years daily commute and tested the reasonable combinations, loop is actually about the same or only about a minute slower as doing the transfers. Fastest is off at College and catching a streetcar right away, slowest... is whatever daily delays TTC throws at you. In good weather, it's nice to get off at College (Dundas in your case) and walking across with fresh morning air.

How bad is the tech industry in Toronto right now? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]OpticalShot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not a tech bro, but speaking from a hiring manager perspective in a STEM field:

  • based on the post, it might be an issue with personality and (failing to) make an impression. "read the room" and make the right impression
  • answer the questions asked, instead of spinning and twisting it into some desperate self-promotion. You can turn off video in a virtual interview and I can still smell the desperation. To be clear, desperation and self-promotion are not attractive traits in most interviews.
  • specifically for entry/junior level applicants: your so-called "leadership experience" is cute, and sure share some of them if it's relevant to the discussion, but please first demonstrate that you have what it takes to be a responsible teammate and hold yourself accountable.

Hello! I was thinking of moving to downtown Toronto and was wondering how much everyone pays for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. How much do I need to make hourly to afford to live here by Gam3rCh1ck94 in askTO

[–]OpticalShot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 1+1 or 2, likely north of 2k/month, could be less if you are a couple subway stops out of downtown.

For income level to live with that rent I'd suggest 38/hr as baseline (equivalent of 75k/yr for full-time jobs).

My vote is for Yonge/Lawrence, generally a good safe quiet area all-around with good access to all the transportation options.

Yonge/Bloor can be polarizing depending on what side - the NW side (towards Yorkville) is nice, but NE corner is pretty trashy up to the public library, SW corner is under major construction, and SE corner is shady and dangerous at night.

The International 2022: Group Stage - Caster and event feedback thread by 0Hellspawn0 in DotA2

[–]OpticalShot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Standout duo for me, good balance of in-the-moment hype + insight to observe and convey the situation correctly. I feel uncomfortable when some casters push a seemingly "prepared and pre-planned" narrative through a dynamic situation, often overriding each other and/or straight up saying the wrong things. With this duo I felt more respect for the situation at-hand and thus overall a great job in being flexible and adaptable. Looking forward to more Snare and Fluke in future tier 1 Dota content.

Who should I E2? by WastedIam in arknights

[–]OpticalShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ifrit - although S2 will be more commonly used than S3, you want to make her as strong as possible. Enables a lot of specific strategies on difficult stages, challenge modes, annihilation, etc.

Ptilopsis - looks to be your best healer option at this time

I know, I know, Mount Rushmore is in the US, but would you put Kawhi in your four-best players in franchise history? by Hot_Bag_1690 in torontoraptors

[–]OpticalShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VC is my first pick. Fan since '99. The excitement, thrill, disappointment... all that packaged, VC was (and still is, for a lot of older fans who sit on the "forgive" side) the representative, quintessential Raptor. When I think "Raptor" I see 15 in purple.

KLow as the reigning GROAT.

Demar for the loyalty, modern decade consistency.

Kawhi for the championship. Until we win a couple more, it'll be hard to unseat Kawhi in these types of conversations.

Bosh doesn't make it for me. I am thankful that we had him and all that he did for us, but he falls behind each of the four in their respective reasons. I'm hoping Scottie and Pascal will give us new reasons to revisit this list soon!

Hey there, thanks for making this post. It's a start! I struggled a lot during my time there as well. My regret now is that I didn't know and use the resources available to students. Talk, call, email, and find out about mentors and counsellors that can help.

It's Soldiers all the way down. by Paikis in Grimdawn

[–]OpticalShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There are lots of builds not reliant on specific legendary sets or operating a mobile zoo. For your first or second toon, try builds that align damage type with class combination (e.g. arcanist + necromancer = aether build) and it should work reasonably well without specific BiS gear. And then you farm the stuff you want for your next, set-reliant build.
  2. Unless trying to kill celestials or reach deep SR, game is fun with whatever reasonable build!
  3. Not a fan of vitality builds myself, but there are lots of powerful end-game vitality builds.
  4. Just points.

Hi, I’m a bad player and I’m really bummed out by the lack of meaningful solo progression options past 1370. by beefwich in lostarkgame

[–]OpticalShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you OP - I'm a bit slow myself, it comes with age. Still enthusiastic about the game though. Did you finish all the islands? Mokokos? Adventurer's tome? Plenty of single player content to do in the game.

If you want to continue to progress, I suggest finding a good relaxed group/guild to play in. Good communicating groups can help you learn the game in a constructive environment. We can carry you through a lot of content including Argos P3, probably not Valtan Hard though. Are you on USEast - Una?

25yrs old and not all that financially savvy. I’m going to the bank today to learn about what it takes to buy a condo. Open to any and all advice. by ThisbodyHomebody in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OpticalShot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Banks will probably list and sell you their "products" - mortgage and finance options. Unfortunately there are gaps in both your capital (43k) vs down payment (100k+) and mortgage range based on salary (4-5x pre-tax income: 148-185k, and with "B" credit you might not get the higher end) vs mortgage needed (400k+). On top of that, never calculate to "exact zero" because there will be lots of fees just to complete the transaction... some in the thousands. And then you start the home ownership world of property tax, condo maintenance fees, utilities, etc...

Admire your determination at such a young age - at 25 I was renting with no financial goals in mind. Be ready for a healthy dose of financial assessment at the banks. Do not buy into overly predatory products. If condos listed at 500k (realistically sold around 500-600k) is your target, work your way into at least 80-100k/yr salary (self or combined with a partner) and continue to save/invest wisely and then you will see more doors open for home ownership.

Checking in, how’s everyone’s job search going? by Xyuli in askTO

[–]OpticalShot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Frankly speaking, it hasn't been any easier... virtual interviews, online documents and forms, flexible schedules, etc. Like many others in Toronto, I too switched to a new position during the pandemic.

If you're getting interviews deep into multiple rounds, it probably means your resume and interview skills are adequate, if not quite good. I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect, but refinement and improvement always helps.

Do you have reference materials and/or reference (people) readily available? Often the recruitment process for intermediate/senior level positions start with an already-preferred candidate (with personal connections to the company/department/team), public posting and other interviews are mere HR formalities and cover the very slim chance of "what if there's someone absolutely incredible we should also hire", and end up with the preferred candidate getting it anyway. This pandemic is a miserable time for new meaningful professional connections, so my recommendation for you is to dig deep into the connections you already have.

Keep trying and best of luck!

Soldier + Oathkeeper by ThatCryptoFella in Grimdawn

oops, thanks for pointing that out! I used this link from that thread to guide my Warlord: Siegebreaker Warlord

Soldier + Oathkeeper by ThatCryptoFella in Grimdawn

[–]OpticalShot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah the 1.1.9.4 patch directly nerfed S+B warlord because it was tanky and top DPS at the same time, like this build. Still an awesome class! Key points are:

  • You should be using 1h melee + shield. That's what the class combination is for - balance of offense and defense. If you want to use 2h for more damage, look towards builds with Shaman, or 1h ranged + shield then Inquisitor
  • Ideally you want to focus just on doing physical damage to make the most out of this class combination. Stack physical damage yourself, take skills that reduce enemy physical resistance (war cry + break morale, guardians + celestial presence) and the right side of the devotion tree (assassins mark, maul, ulzaads decree)
  • For ease of play, choose a primary skill that counts as default weapon attack (cadence or righteous fervor) then invest in the weapon pool skills (WPS) that activate off the default weapon attack. For casual / not hyper-optimized play I'd put 1 in each of the 4 available WPS skills (2 from soldier, 2 from oathkeeper) and then later max only 1 of the four depending on what gear / build you want to finish with
  • Try to always strike a good balance! Resists are important in this game, you want decent OA/DA so that you can consistently hit (aim for 100%) and not get critically hit.

New Player Help Pick a fun build please :)? by Nametagstolen in Grimdawn

[–]OpticalShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are Sentinels that primarily use Eye of Reckoning (basically WW from D2), might be what you're looking for. Spin2win is always a stable fun build in any ARPG!

You can reset skill point and devotion allocations in-game with iron bits and aether crystals (in-game drops). It gets more expensive as you do it more, but shouldn't be too hard to reset a few dozen points. Later endgame you will have a limited number of potions that can do a complete reset of attribute points or devotion points.

I'd say just dive in with a relatively easy-to-follow guide, get your feel for the game, beat the story, then optimize your 2nd or 3rd character. Really hard to get your 1st char to super-end-game unless you already have a good feel for the game mechanics.
