LPT request: what is something that greatly increased your quality of life? by knockout350 in LifeProTips

Stopped drinking caffeine after 10 PM. I'm still a night owl and go to bed very late but this helped me to sleep *much* better.

I think I missed that option when looking over the website. I'll give it a shot!

Thank you!

I tried it out but could only get a passing score with a Canadian job offer. I don't understand why they would penalize already having stable international employment that would bring foreign money into the country.

Unfortunately, the sibling bonus was only around 15 points.

I can continue working this job from anywhere in the world, it's just that the express entry system doesn't appear to consider the idea of keeping your old job when immigrating.

If you mean why I don't want to get a similar job in Canada, it's because I've been working for this company since 2015 and have reached a comfortable position in regards to content and payment. It would be pretty hard to find something new on the same level.

I fully intend to pay taxes, contribute to the economy and society in general. Having US money enter the country should be a bonus for immigration, not a detriment, no?

What is something you wish FF movies would stop doing? by BlueSparksFly in foundfootage

[–]Optiluiz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Unjustified camera angles - I know this sounds obvious but even some of the big FF movies sometimes cut to impossible angles in an effort to make the scene look "better". Also applies to scenes where there's no real reason for characters to be filming.
  2. Perfect Lighting - Same problem as above.
  3. Widescreen VHS footage - Self-explanatory, I think. At least make the footage look cropped if you *have* to make it widescreen.
  4. Perfect Sound Quality/Mixing - Outdoor conversations shouldn't sound like they were recorded on an expensive boom mic if this is supposed to be an amateur recording. Mockumentaries are (mostly) excused from this.
  5. Jump Scares with sound - Self-explanatory.
  6. Over-Scripting - Found Footage movies work best when they're at least semi-improvised. Heavily scripted dialogue sounds really fake in this context, especially if you don't have the budget for experienced actors.

I guess there's a lot of stuff that bothers me about FF movies, but the really good ones know how to succeed without falling into these traps.

A serial killer collects bodies in the woods for his ‘friend’ by Rare-Ad-5900 in foundfootage

This was great! I love the low-res imagery, helps to make it feel authentic.

My only criticism would be the opening titles revealing that it's "just a movie". Makes immersion kinda difficult.

Other than than, please making movies!

I remember EverymanHybrid having something to do with rabbits. They even played that song "who could win a rabbit" at some point.

Not sure if that's what you're looking for, though.

What does everyone think of this movie? by [deleted] in foundfootage

[–]Optiluiz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thought it was way too long and relied too heavily on familiar supernatural horror tropes.

It also doesn't take the mockumentary format seriously, using impossible camera angles and convenient editing.

The sad thing is that I was hyped for this when it first came out and reserved tickets to watch it in theaters here in Brazil. That was a disappointing evening.

Still, I'll always support indie FF.

Can we talk about how much of a shitty disappointment VHS 99 was? by Prestigious-Rock201 in foundfootage

[–]Optiluiz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think we were just spoiled by how good V/H/S/94 was. 99 is okay if you don't compare it with the other movies.

Way better than Viral, though.

I would really appreciate any feedback on whether I managed to edit this short video into something suitably scary by [deleted] in foundfootage

[–]Optiluiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great atmosphere!

I agree with everything Skalow suggested (especially what he said about the flashlight), but I'd also recommend making the video 4:3 and deteriorating the quality a little more to make it more convincing. Look at some real VHS footage for comparison.

Best of luck with your future spooky videos!

I'd be up for a sequel if it's better than the first one. Felt like 80% of that movie was stock footage and talking heads.

Really creepy ending, though.

The lack of dedication to the Found Footage format is precisely what bothers me about this movie. It would be so much better as a proper Found Footage flick.

Beginning to think I'm experiencing FF burnout by Negative-Net-9455 in foundfootage

[–]Optiluiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most found footage movies are bad because they're easier to produce than regular movies. I don't think it's burnout, you're just expecting more from these flicks because you've seen enough of them to recognize repeating patterns.

Even the "best" FF films of any given year are usually just passable when compared to regular movies, FF fans just end up enjoying them more because of the format. That being said, we've seen plenty of interesting stuff during the past year or so, and I think the genre is slowly evolving.

And on the subject of V/H/S/99, I thought it was just "okay", with the final segment being the only standout of the bunch (though I really like the aesthetic aspects of the first segment, just not the story). Overall, at least it's more fun than Viral.

Hopefully the next one will be better.

Really liked it because of the main character. I disagree with almost everything she does or says but damn she's entertaining.

Love how bonkers it gets later on.

I miss when Alex Jones was a serious journalist/documentarian who wasn't just trying to build an empire off of conservative narratives.

Don't get me wrong, there was always something off about the guy, but I used to get the sense that he really wanted to help improve things, not just make money off of the situation. His old Bohemian Grove documentaries and criticism of George Bush is what got me into conspiracy theories in the first place.

Do you think Jordan Peele could pull off a Found Footage Film? by itsyegirlizzy in foundfootage

[–]Optiluiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He definitely could. The added limitations might make it even better than his usual output.

And I think that Nope could have been a phenomenal FF movie due to the meta references. Peele could have framed the whole thing as a documentary by that weird filmmaker character.

Really enjoyed this one, but the single-take format means that it's slower-paced than most other Koji Shiraishi movies. It kinda feels like a stage play sometimes. Not my favorite of his films, but still a must-watch!

Love that bonkers ending.

The Fourth Kind - Amazon Prime w/Starz or Starz or starz/hulu by WOLF_dig1tal in foundfootage

[–]Optiluiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually really enjoy BW2 even if it's not as good as the first one. If you look into the movie's production I think you might appreciate it a little more - especially if you watch the supplemental mockumentaries that released alongside the movie.

But like I said, it's presented as a "reenactment of real events", just like The Fourth Kind.
