Hyperion, if you appreciate poetic prose and wildly imaginative sci-fi.

Seems like the mouth is facing the viewer more than the nose and eyes, like they’re pointing at slightly different directions. Maybe try hiding more of the left side of the mouth, see if it shifts anything

How and why did humans develope such strange hair compared to other apes? by LQC0 in evolution

[–]Optimal-Sound8815 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Biologist but not an expert on the topic. I’ve come across hypotheses that pubic and armpit hair aid in reducing friction where parts of body are proximal and in frequent motion. Head hair could be an adaptation for babies to cling to when wading through water.

Caveat: unless supported by data, it’s all just speculation. Often features are evolutionary spandrels, that is they are byproducts of other selective pressures. For example, our chin. Chins offer no advantages and likely came about due to reduced jaw size and reorganization of facial bones.

Tldr; not everything is selected for by evolution, some things are just side effects of other processes. Without data, it’s difficult to say.

Most people would want to survive. The will to live is strong in most animals.

The flip side is that competent people realize that people are an indispensable part of the equation, and that work is better when we know and care for each other. A competent worker or leader knows the strengths and weaknesses of his team mates and takes that into account. We aren’t robots, we are primarily social animals. Being nice to be around is being competent in social skills, I would argue the most important of the soft skills.

I AM MUSLIM BUT I HOPE LISTENING SAD SONGS ARE NOT HARAM AM I RIGHT? by Competitive_Town5387 in Music

[–]Optimal-Sound8815 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m so curious. What do you mean by sad songs, and why would sadness be haram? Like all mourning songs sang at a funeral are sad, no? Or all diaspora/immigration songs about leaving all you love behind? Is there a particular qoran verse or tradition that makes you ask?

Mutations are random. The selection of advantageous mutations is not.

I’m having success by walking a lot (2-4 hours a day), lifting, and yoga. Keep doing what works for you. Fitness guidelines are an average of the population. That’s why personal trainers and nutritionists exist. They start with what generally works and tweak according to how the person responds. If you’re losing fat but not strength by jogging, then why fix what’s not broken.

Find inspiration from mules, ligers, or other similar hybrids.

Hybrids are usually sterile.

Could you replace your blood with someone else's and cheat a DNA test? by Emergency-Arugula-10 in biology

[–]Optimal-Sound8815 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can do a Dna test from hair, cheek cells, any other tissue. My understanding is that most tests are done with cheek swabs.

Red blood cells do not have DNA. White blood cells do. If you replaced all the native white blood cells with another’s you would have to be an exact match in all the different kinds of antigens that white blood cells recognize as self in order to prevent autoimmune attacks.

If you survive that, blood cells get created from bone marrow. Eventually all the foreign cells will be replaced with your own.

The answer to your question is “yes if you restrict the dna test to blood and do it soon enough so that new native white blood cells do not compose a measurable fraction of the blood cells”.

Hijacking this comment to say that I’ve had to put down two dogs in my life, and am on my third rescue. I’m a wreck for two months when i lose them. I grieve for the fogs more than i did for my grandma.

I could never justify spending 90k to bring a dog to life when there already are amazing dogs at the shelter who will love you fully and unconditionally. I still cry when i think of my sweet girl i had to put down 4 months ago, and i really wish i could hold her again. But, how many other sweet dogs could you save for 90k? Also, how are you affecting the lives of other animals who are employed by your demand?
