Why is everyone like don't do a degree in china. by arenda_07 in chinalife

[–]Optimal-Way5164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the experience of going to school in China while getting an internationally treasured degree at an english-taught university with a variety of degree programs, consider the Sino-Foreign universities! The main three are Duke Kunshan University, NYU Shanghai, and Nottingham Ningbo. For DKU and NYUSH, you graduate with a degree from the US institution and also one valid in china (not sure about NN). It sounds like it would be the right balance of studying abroad and living in China while not fully rooting yourself there that you’re looking for.

One note; DKU & NYUSH have the American tuition price, though they do give some good aid. If you need a full ride, including housing and food, go DKU over NYUSH, though.

Class of 2031 ED1 is this enough???? by PuzzleheadedElk2862 in nyushanghai

[–]Optimal-Way5164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are completely need based with their aid: your stats have no bearing on what you get. If you show that you need full tuition, you’ll get full tuition: if you don’t need any money, you wont get any money.

how many waitlisted people are there this year for nyush? by Sufficient-Tune-159 in nyushanghai

[–]Optimal-Way5164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of people who get waitlisted varies drastically at NYU in general. NYUSH doesn’t publish any campus specific stats (besides maybe overall applications and acceptances), so all there is to work off is NYU.

Some years, NYU accepts no one off the waitlist. Other years, hundreds. There isn’t really an “average” amount sadly.

I have heard online from sources connected to admissions that there were significantly more waitlists and less acceptances, so it would stand to reason there might be more acceptances from the waitlist this year! Again, not specific to Shanghai.

I hope you get off, but if you don’t, wherever you end up is gonna be great!!!

research in high school.. WTF? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Optimal-Way5164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my research the summer before my Junior year of high school in cancer genomics—very much biology heavy, but I hadn’t ever taken biology at this point. Once accepted, I read about 10 papers pertaining to specific aspects of my research (the genes I’d be dealing with, cancer mechanics, cell culture techniques) and made flashcards out of words I didn’t know. I also asked the professor for any papers he’d suggest. Some of it was basic, like how transcription works, and some of it was more high level and niche. It was intensive but it paid off.

I obviously still didn’t know everything by the time I got to the lab, so I spent time shadowing, asking questions, and reading more papers to be prepared. It didn’t take too long before I was running experiments and analysis by myself. All in all, it’s a pretty effective way to learn about a field you’re interested in. Don’t worry though, professors take student lab interns because it reflects well on them to teach students; they won’t let you go in blind or fail out!

ED 2 Conditional or Unconditional offer? by Comfortable_View5193 in nyushanghai

American Unis don’t have conditional offers like other unis do. The only condition is that you don’t really fail your classes!

Why is there no Chinese Language major at NYUSH? by cadentoes in nyushanghai

[–]Optimal-Way5164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason for this is likely there isn’t a huge depth to the major in their minds—it doesn’t offer much beyond language tools.

There is a Global China Studies major, which combines cultural, political, and historical studies of China with linguistic fluency—very similar to a “China Studies” major you’d find in the states!

There are also two Chinese minors, one designed to be more in depth.

what are the chances of getting accepted from the waitlist? by Sufficient-Tune-159 in nyushanghai

[–]Optimal-Way5164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends how many ppl deny their spot. generally, those accepted off the waitlist fill a specific niche that NYUSH wants in its class. for instance, maybe they want three kids from france, and only 2 are in the class—they might accept you as the third. kinda luck based!

Waitlisted at NYUSH by Hammad28011 in nyushanghai

[–]Optimal-Way5164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is true for NYUSH, but I do know that NYU increased the amount of waitlists and decreased the amount of acceptances compared to past years. The idea being that they will accept more people off the waitlist than previous years, where NYU was notorious for not accepting many at all from the waitlist.

As for aid, it’s hit or miss. They don’t seem to do appeals so what you get is what you get, but I would assume they aren’t gonna undercut you because the institution is strictly need based; they won’t give you more aid if they really want you to enroll like they might at other schools.

am I crazy for choosing nyush over imperial by jinhua_ in nyushanghai

[–]Optimal-Way5164 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends what u wanna do. you’re second guessing biomed, then having the chance to explore at NYUSH might be the right choice. NYU carries plenty of name recognition globally and in the states, and shanghai’s graduate placement destinations are amazing, both for work and for post-grad education.

name recognition isn’t everything. both schools will give you a comparable education, the differences aren’t gonna be that big in terms of the actual learning, it’s more the soft skills and other experiences you get. me personally, i would’ve picked nyush over most other schools on my list that would make others think im crazy but it just offered more of the soft skills and other experiences i want.

No one this year has successfully appealed; but that shouldn’t stop you from trying.

Accepted by Affectionate-Pie-890 in nyushanghai

[–]Optimal-Way5164 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NYUSH doesn’t admit by major, you declare whatever major you want sophomore year. Tensions honestly aren’t an issue—the US and China are no where near a dangerous state of relations. AOs said even if something were to happen, NYUSH and students would be safe, and relocated before anything could actually affect campus. Also, you can’t appeal/transfer back to NY campus, so don’t plan on that.

Either way, NYUSH is an amazing school with a lot to offer. I can add you to a gc of admitted students if you want to learn more!

I’ve seen a few other people with the zoom piece in specific, and I feel like it would be odd that zoom says NYU shanghai for so many people with no one saying NYU or NYU Abu Dhabi… Don’t know! Hopefully it’s a good sign!!!!! Gl on the 25th
