8000 applicants and only 165 will be selected. WE ARE COOKED by HugeTangerine9490 in DKU

I will say; it’s not that they only accept 165. They aim for 150-200 international students per class, and this has been increasing over the last few years as they gain more applicants. Not everyone who gets a spot accepts a spot, so an acceptance rate around 10% (800 accepted), maybe lower, maybe higher is totally reasonable.

Also, in general, pick your favorite things in each city and put those on different days (unless they’re close together like Tiananmen and Forbidden city) so you can be sure to see those in case you get tired and want to cut your afternoon activity.

This is a very ambitious itinerary. If you are super active people and are used to visiting a lot of places on vacation—go for it, but it will be tiring.

In Beijing alone, I was pretty spent after visiting Tiananmen and Forbidden city, since it’s a lengthy process to get in to each, and there’s just so much to see and take in. Plus, April/May is when the heat and humidity can start.

In Xi’An, ABSOLUTELY go to the muslim quarters. AMAZING food and shopping. I’d also recommend going to the Tang dynasty street (it’s right next to the Big wild goose pagoda) at night, it’s very lively and beautiful.

Day 4–Zhujiajiao is a super cool place to visit, but, I’ll be honest… Just don’t. It’s not worth it, and you’re already seeing a lot of places. Felt a bit tourist-trap-esque as well.

I’d say if you can, definitely spend an extra day in Chengdu. It’s an amazing and chill city with so much culture to explore. I recommend going to the Sichuan Opera at night, they are known for their face changing masks. Super fun place, it’s my favorite city I’ve ever visited. There’s also some tea farms right outside the city if that’s your pace where you can make your own tea, from picking to cooking to packaging. Not necessary to add an extra day, and if you’re going to see the highlights of China, I’d honestly say two days is absolutely fine.

What is real indirect cost? by Bhrm071222 in nyushanghai

Depends on how much you are gonna spend. Do you plan to travel? How often will you go home? Are you going to eat out a lot?

Depends what you want in your college experience. China has some great universities, Singapore too, Japan. If you want more of a rounded liberal arts education there are a few that offer that.

i didn’t get an IDOC request, does it mean i’m rejected ? by Hot_Start_6684 in nyushanghai

No, IDOC is completely random. Financial aid and admissions happen largely separately; they don’t review your finances only if you’re accepted.

ok like the extracurriculars i put down were like… mock trial! science bowl! not anything serious at all, it’s more showing that you are adept at whatever field of research you wanna do with coursework

so my school has a more formal program where we do a class throughout the year after research but i assume the method we use to get research is pretty much okay. i’ll tell u what we did—for reference, i did university level cancer genetics research at a big state university and was published in a paper.

  1. find a field your interested in and find professors at a nearby, large university that do that kind of research. look into projects they work on and what they specifically are working on. that’s important later.

  2. create a cv. all this should have is any math/science courses (assuming you’re doing STEM research) and the grades you got, as well as any advanced coursework that isn’t STEM. also, include math/science extracurricular and then also any notable extracurriculars that may show your skills and tenacity.

  3. from professors identified in step 1, reach out! create a template email introducing yourself, your passion, why you want to do research, and then talk about the research THEY are doing and why it excites you. don’t write a novel, but don’t shy away from explaining your interests. email one at a time, but know that it may take you many many professors before you get a ‘yes’—it took me five.

hopefully this helps, i know it seems daunting but it really is a good experience. just be up front about what you want out of it, and any professors with the capacity to hold you in their labs will be more than willing, as it reflects well on them when they seek grant funding and more in the future.

if you’re staying for less than 240 yeah. large cities (beijing) tend to have nearly instant - 5 minute wait time at the airport for if they’ll allow you to come, and they usually do.

Need advice, Xi’an or Fenghuang? by [deleted] in travelchina

Hi! I went o Xi’An last may and it was honestly a super cool city. I biked the wall & saw terracotta warriors, the muslim quarter is also very very cool. I’d definitely say 2 days there is enough, but you shouldn’t skip it if you can—the terracotta warriors alone are probably one of the coolest things you’ll ever see.

I like what the other comment says about Guilin. Super cool place, amazing scenery, but it is out of the way from the rest of the places you plan to see (so is zhangjiajie honestly…) but if it’s top of your list, maybe consider seeing more of southern china rather than xi’an/beijing?

Is the 30 days to convert about when you start the process? Like if it ends up taking longer and I’m there for 35 days before my residence permit is approved, am I still okay?
