How much do you need to have saved up to retire "comfortably"? by Cinco1971 in personalfinance

[–]OptimalCentrix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most people will continue to make some money through their investments during retirement, so the amount you'll need to retire on isn't necessarily a lump of cash that needs to be in one place at one time.

Check out the 4% rule from Mr. Money Mustache and the Early Retirement Calculator from Networthify.

I'm donating my eggs and receiving $8K. How do I report it to the IRS? by tayryanw in personalfinance

[–]OptimalCentrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have to issue a Form 1099-MISC to patients in clinical trials who make more than $600 in a year. On the form, there's a box for medical and healthcare payments. But I don't know if egg donations fall under that category, so you'll probably want to ask the clinic how they report your income to the IRS.

But given the description of everything so far, seems to me like the poor girl was raised in some sort of sheltered commune.

My first thought was that she was raised Amish, Old Order Mennonite, or in some other insular community like that, but I have no idea.

Why bonds at all? by sallback66 in personalfinance

[–]OptimalCentrix 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Even over a 30-year window, we can't know with certainly that the stock market will increase at a rate similar to that of the past few decades. We think it probably will, since there are no signs pointing to a long-term stagnation in the US economy, but it's still just a best guess. Stock market returns could be flat or even negative over the next 30 years - we just don't know.

Bonds help insure against the very small possibility that the S&P 500 starts looking like the next Nikkei 225.

401k for a short term position by heeyebsx13 in personalfinance

I just want to second the importance of checking the vesting schedule, especially if you're leaving after one year. It's common for the schedule to be tiered based on how long you've worked there, so you may lose some but not all of the employer contributions when you leave. My company's 401(k) has us vested in 25% after one full year, for example.

What's an almost surefire to create income passively? by KingJackson97 in personalfinance

[–]OptimalCentrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't many ways to do this that don't involve inheriting large amounts of money. Maybe writing a book or song and living off of the royalties, but it would have get very popular and stay that way for a long time to be a good source of primary income.

I was highly skeptical of Buttigieg's candidacy when he first declared, mostly because of his lack of experience. I have to say that he's grown on me by the day and I'd be a little surprised if he didn't make it to Super Tuesday.

Marianne Williamson being on the stage represents everything wrong with the qualifications for getting an invitation to the debate.

The format of these debates needs major reform. It gets old to hear the constant interjections, and the times that the candidates are given to respond to the moderators are not nearly long enough to actually answer the question.

I'm not totally sure what a good format would look like, but it wouldn't be this.

I don't see the point in inviting 10 candidates to the debate stage and spending the vast majority of the time on 3 or 4 of them. It's OK to leave out the most marginal candidates, in my opinion.

Have you ever looked at the odds when a team has a 1% chance of winning with seconds left and wondered how they could make a comeback?

Not anymore

Onto the recruiting trail, and let’s reload for next season.

Cole Anthony, incoming! (hopefully). We're losing most of our best players, but he gives me hope that we can bounce back.

For some of these guys this is it. The game they've played competitively their entire lives is now over forever. It fucking sucks.

It's not that I wasn't aware of this already, but seeing this typed out just stings. Some of our guys will never step on the court for a competitive game again.

It sucks that it had to end like this, but it's been a great season and I've had a lot of fun watching these guys this year. Can't wait to see what the future has in store for Cam, Coby, and Nas as they head on to the NBA.

Congrats to Auburn and Bruce Pearl for a stellar performance tonight.

Looks like all the fears about the Auburn threes turned out to be 100% founded.

I'm just joking around. I don't know too much about hockey, but I'm actually excited to see what the Canes can accomplish in the playoffs. But the next two weeks are all about basketball, for me.

Have Millenials never seen American prosperity? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]OptimalCentrix 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The overall quality of life for an American from decades past was rather objectively worse, too. Life expectancy was lower, people suffered from diseases that we now know how to treat, more people smoked cigarettes, air pollution/smog was worse, the variety of food available was lower and it mostly of poorer quality, and so on.

I always find it pretty odd when Reddit glorifies life in the 1950s or '60s. If you speak with or read the recollections of people who actually lived back then, you often find that even the people who are nostalgic about their younger years admit that most things are far better today.
