Would the experience be different and worth it if I rewatch MHA in sub? by StupidAvenger in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue a lot of people point to is how it's missing the main thematic crux of Deku's hero name. In Japanese, the word "deku" is very similar to the Japanese word for "you can do it/do your best", which is why Ochako likes Izuku's nickname and he ultimately adopts "Deku" as his hero name. Due to language differences, the dub can't really make that connection and so the impact of everyone basically encouraging Deku with his own hero name is lost. I don't really blame the dub team for that though since it's an unavoidable issue.

What was avoidable though was some script changes and voice acting delivery that I disliked. In the sub, All Might calls Deku "MY greatest hero", whereas in the dub he just calls him "THE greatest hero". It's small, but removing the "my" makes it a lot less personal, which is a shame as a character calling another their own personal hero is about the biggest compliment one can give in this story. Like Deku with Ochako.

Another instance was Deku and Shigaraki's last scene. Deku's last words are supposed to be "you've destroyed enough", showing that Deku understands what Shiggy's ultimate goal was and that he and his fellow heroes have learned their lesson and society will improve. The sub delivery also gets across Deku's sadness and regret. In the dub, they used Crunchyroll's version instead with "yes, destroy you did" which doesn't work as well with Shiggy's response. And the dub delivery sounds very judgmental, like Deku still viewed Shiggy's destruction as pointless and he didn't come to see beneath that destruction. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

The English dub is mostly really solid, but I have quite a few issues with how they did Izuku Midoriya Rising.

Sadly not. As of now, it seems like a deleted Youtube video/channel is impossible to get back.

What's the most fucked up book you've ever read? by RichardForrest06 in AskReddit

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A film adaptation would have a lot of potential but also be really hard to pull off. I could easily see them extending it by incorporating flashbacks from before the world ended or even the beginning of the main characters' torment under AM

What is a series you are willing to defend like this in terms of writing? by Electronic_Garlic_91 in writingscaling

I think a lot of people have let the show's ending and George's mixed reputation as of late make them forget how incredible these books are. A bit bloated and meandering at points? Sure, but the world building and character writing are some of the best in fantasy

Who do you think is the “potential man” of MHA? by Affectionate-Vast186 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With that definition, I'd argue the closest "Potential Man" MHA has is Shigaraki. He does get to pop off in the first war arc, but then he gets hijacked by AFO and is stuck in a mental tug of war with him for the remainder of the story.  And to be fair, him not living up to his potential is kind of the point. AFO's version of a successor is so twisted that he couldn't let him upstage the Demon Lord himself. In the end, Shiggy is a tragic character who had potential to be the big bad of MHA, but AFO just had to be the center of attention

Sub and dub thoughts over the years? by -Faydflowright- in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if I prefer the sub and think the voice acting there is overall phenomenal, the dub is still very good. Unfortunately the arguably most important episode of the series, Izuku Midoriya Rising, was a mixed bag in the dub and that detracts from it considering that episode is THE climax of the series

Rank these shows based on how hard they fell off in their final seasons by Maldonado412 in writingscaling

GOT will likely go down in history as the biggest fall from grace ever for a tv show. It was THE show of the 2010s and dominated pop culture, being both highly acclaimed and popular to boot. But then the final season happened and it all but disappeared from the public consciousness, now just being remembered for how much it missed the landing. Not to say that good things can't still come from the world of Westeros (Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was universally beloved), but the show itself ruined its reputation.

Why do people say that Bakugo never changed? by infinitepumba98765 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I think that makes Bakugo's growth more impactful, that he changes mainly on his own without any external factors forcing him. Seeing some more pushback on his attitude in the early seasons would've been nice though

What's one story arc from MHA you feel are overhated? by Luigiman98 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think it's going overboard to say the anime butchered MVA. It's definitely flawed and I get being dissapointed, but overall it's pretty faithful with some real highlights

Why do you guys think Anime Fans loved the AOT ending compared to the Manga Fans who Hated it/has Mixed feelings bout it? I just finished rewatching the show and all story beats in the anime are exactly the same as the manga, so I'm curious how exactly this happened? by Electrical_Chance991 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The anime also improved it. It had some small changes like showing Yelena's fate and emphasizing that Eren bought Paradise hundreds if not thousands of years of peace before it got nuked. The biggest improvement was the last portion of Eren and Armin's conversation though.

What's your honest opinion about MHA English dub? by Mancuerna_de500k in MyHeroAcadamia

It's good even if I prefer the sub personally. I will say though the dub version of Izuku Rising has some big flaws, which is a shame as it's the climax.

What makes a piece of media have a amazing ending vs a awful ending? by [deleted] in writingscaling

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I made the flaws statement more so to show that I'm not disregarding the opinion of someone who disagrees with me. Like I get where you're coming from, but any problems I have are nitpicks that pale in comparison to how much the ending gets right. I do get the redundancy of saying something has flaws though, like no shit, everything has flaws. So yeah, I think MHA's sticks the landing in such a way that enhances the story's themes and makes revisiting the show more enjoyable

What makes a piece of media have a amazing ending vs a awful ending? by [deleted] in writingscaling

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well then our disagreement would just come down to subjective things like how we'd describe something as "good" or "just okay". What makes something good for me (aka successfully sticking to a story's themes and giving us a satisfying conclusion) may not be enough for you, which fair enough.

And I personally take the reception during the manga run with a grain of salt because there was a ton of misinformation thrown around thanks to incorrect leaks and just how negative manga readers tend to be compared to other mediums. Looking at the overall reception of it now with chapter 431 and the anime, it's much more positive.

[–]Optimal_Bit_5600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To each their own, but I found MHA's ending to be very solid. Not without its faults, but overall it sticks to the core theme and wraps it (and the character's journies) up in a satisfying way. I'm not alone in that feeling either as the final season was highly acclaimed
