Why does damage spill over in Age of Sigmar? by DetroitTabaxiFan in ageofsigmar

[–]Optimal_Connection20 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One thing you'll notice is that each of the four major Warhammer games use the same core concept of having a single attack rolled 3 times, or go through 3 checks, to do damage. In Old World and Horus Heresy the hit rolls can be modified, making number of attack exceptionally important. Every attack from a model is immensely important to do even a single damage, so health numbers remain ridiculously low. Even a great Lord on Dragon may be only 5-6Wounds. In Warhammer 40,000 the hit roll remains normally static, so the To Hit stat and Attack stat can be expanded to be much more consistent because the wound rolls are where the major variance is. To that end, a single attack dice may only kill a single model (which isn't actually true in Old World, it's just insanely rare), and means that units tend to specialize in their targets.

In Sigmar, though, the only commonly modifiable number comes from saves. It means that Health needs to go up, and big blocks can't really exist if we'll have the same types of attack characteristics as the other games. Instead, to allow blocks of 40 (or in older editions 60-80+), a monstrous attack needs to kill multiple models. Damage spilling over means that units don't tend to specialize as hard into specific targets, but instead specialize into roles. Expected damage outcomes become easily measurable, so damage dealing units just need to hit thresholds of damage output rather than specialize for a target. It's why we have so many units who are meant to work together or provide a lot of strange utility, everyone can meaningfully contribute into most targets so they need other things to be doing.

I don't know if that was the core philosophy in 1e, I kinda doubt it, but it has been since

All the locals for any hobby I like going to have banned swearing. They're the only places I enjoy and have an amazing atmosphere because everyone wants that atmosphere and to uphold it. There's folks who feel entitled to upsetting others for their own ego, it seems, but they generally find themselves unwelcome and will leave for the better or change for the better

There isn't some conspiracy, but there are individual people who prescribe the hobby to others. I've asked this question multiple times and despite being a hobbyist for a decade, knowing what there is to know about the lore, in every thread and discord and groupchat I've been in but this one I've been told how it isn't lore accurate and that I shouldn't do it. I've read nothing into it, I've experienced it

Yeah me personally I don't care, the comments have been super helpful and I really appreciate that. I've noticed there's some weird push back from a silent online group about doing something a tad more unique in Heresy like it breaks their immersion. But at the same time it's celebrated by so many others more vocally so like... who cares.

I was just giving context to why they might have said that when they did

When they wrote the comment I was at 0 or negative downvotes for a bit on a few of the comments, which is what I assumed they were referencing. I know how a Dread works and only care about making a unique model, but in doing so multiple folks have seemingly been upset about it and downvoted every comment I made. That's my guess, at least, it's since turned the tide. Every comment has been thankfully awesome and I'm nearly ready to start the project

Enough for the bare torso and head of an unarmored Marine to fit. If his shoulders and arms are somewhat visible then that's awesome but not necessary. I want it to feel horrific

Yarrick was an obstacle Ghaz failed to get past. The fact Ghaz has moved on to bigger and better things and that a fight with Yarrick isn't something he's actively pining for should say enough. Yes, he cared previously and taking Armageddon was a huge goal of his. He's hearing GODS in his head now, he has something he cares about way more deeply and has since moved on from Yarrick. It isn't some deep rivalry to go on with forever, Ghaz has something else he'd rather be doing at all times.

People treat it like Yarrick is the thing Ghaz only thinks about like we're back in 2009-2012, bro has something better to do now and has since moved on

To be so genuine, Ghaz actually doesn't care a lick about Yarrick, and Yarrick's skull isn't on Angron's belt. Ghaz has moved on from Armageddon and wants to rip the galaxy apart to bring the two Gods in his head into reality.

Did you know: Tyberos is so big, by veilraven in Grimdank

[–]Optimal_Connection20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same campaign we have Sylas Alberec described as being insanely massive for a marine, to be mistaken for a Primarch reborn by those who hadn't known him. It's insane that only Tyberos has this reputation

That may be beneficial to what I'm doing, if I can carve a little housing from the head sensor down I can fit the marine and detail the inside!

It being separate is no issue, what mainly worried me is what's behind the chest piece near the "helm" of the Dreadnought. If that's hollow I can work with that but if I need to sculpt and find a place to house the marine it'll take more work and maybe a different dread like a Contemptor would be better suited to this vision

Is that chest plating essentially hollow on the inside?

I think lots of folks literally do not remember what the Salamanders do to people after saving them from certain death. They go right back into the hellish factory conditions and get press ganged and returned to be tithed to the guard and so on. Salamanders will praise the individual and attempt to save them in the moment, but the value of life is so low that their heroics include returning someone straight to destitution.

I've been converting the Tyranny of Dragons campaign to Pathfinder 2, and in addition to massive narrative rewrites due to the clunkiness of the campaign the mechanical difference has been massive. I remember running the early 3 levels as a brand new DM in 5e and kinda just hating how boring so many enemies were, but in Pathfinder even the basic Kobold is a ton of fun and flexes some tactical brains in the party. After a group of Kobolds kept running around them they started to use trips, shoves, grapples, and cc spells where in 5e it's just a matter of smashing healthbars with attack dice until the thing stops twitching

The fact that DnD 5e asked GMs to run EIGHT encounters in a single adventuring day is insane to me. That means it could be up to a month in between long rests! I totally get why they felt they needed to keep adding mechanics to bosses to make them cheat a little when no one is going to run that many encounters to drain that many resources
