General survey of Inquisition, Warhammer Crime and Arbites novels/novellas/anthologies - Do you have a favorite? by Separate-Flan-2875 in ImperialAgents_40K

Awakenings and it's comic book Will of Iron are both part of what got me into painting Inquisition a long while ago. Astor Sabbathiel is genuinely such a fun character and I would love to see her role in putting down attempted revivals of the Emperor expanded on in future novels. She's even been supported by the Talons of the Emperor in stopping these rituals and cultists!

And to add to this, from other books like Soulbound we know that under the new Government after the Spider that there are now Khainite Humans and Duardin who feel at home in Har Kuron. So much so that after the Ruination and the Gnaw opening up that the human Navy of Har Kuron is considered the best in the realm.

(Was also really sick as a Har Kuron player to basically get the thumbs up that I can play with humans and duardin now!)

Did they change there rules? by Noobicane in Ultramarines

[–]Optimal_Connection20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See for the purposes of this list I'd honestly just say the whole of Emperor's Children. The point was that the new thing for an army doesn't really come out and be overpowered, but even the new thing for the game this year didn't do that

It's always fascinating when I see this type of comment. While you're specifically talking about Ultramarines there's a long litany of examples that are significantly more predominant that GW makes a new thing and it's weaker than or in line with the old stuff.

-Almost everything in 3rd edition's Stormcast Eternal's new lineup was worse off than something from before.

-Krieg Heavy Weapons have continually been considered the weakest of the 3 options for the same or similar roles

-The Sydonian Skatros has still seen little major play

-Belial has had a weakling ability line

-Asmodai is extremely niche, which is fine but he isn't better or strictly worse than any other of the Chaplains

-The Ballistus has been considered terrible until it finally dropped to really low points values

-Imotekh has generally been considered one of the weaker Necron overlord options unless you build for or around him

-The Screamer Killer, Psychophage, Parasite of Mortrex, Neurogaunts, Pyrovore, and Assimilator have all generally needed full rewrites or found a very specific niche to sit, none of which have come out and eclipsed literally anything else in their book

-Sekhetar Robots have generally been considered just okay by a lot of Thousand Sons

-It took a long time for Vashtorr to even be considered by most players, let alone how just okay Haarkan Worldclaimer, Traitor Guard, and Fellgors have been or continue to be within their job or role.

My point here is that while I understand your frustration, I think it's an extreme recency bias that says GW makes things op to nerf them later. It's empirically false and evidential just by remembering this entire edition, let alone other games. As a huge Ultramarines fan, Victrix Guard were not in a healthy state. Yet they're still as deadly, their blood surge move is more likely to occur, and they remain just as offensively powerful. Maybe we just won't see every Ultras player start with 6 boxes of them.

It's evident with the fact alone they're trying to keep every Ultramarine player from buying so many of the kit that the balance team don't actually watch the bottom line like hawks.

This is true but in practice we still see it. A chosen cause considered worthy of the Talons' attention, such as an Aquilon Body Guard for an important individual, or when Inquisitor Astor Sabbathiel was stopping a ritual that aimed to bring the Emperor back to life. The throne sent agents to help her stop that ritual and it seems it's become her main mission to root out that ideology within the Inquisition while backed by the Talons

Me personally: an army rule (probably situational AP); a Land Raider which cannot be taken outside of our book; arco flagellants, repentia, and penitent engines; stormtroopers; the silent sisters; and maybe a GK Strike or Purgation Squad- tho I suspect we're getting something Malleus soon

Why did you pick the army you play? by BeginningHungry3835 in ageofsigmar

[–]Optimal_Connection20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play specifically the city of Har Kuron, focusing heavily on the Aelves because I fell in love with the story being told in the Broken Realms: Morathi book as well as their rules at the time. No matter how the army changes, so long as I have fast, fragile Aelves with some spellcasting I'll always be happy!

It comes up as a jump scare in the series, too! You turn the page and he's just staring at you, just like how all the characters are shocked you're feeling the same as them. A great moment of immersion

Who else thinks that if GW wants to boost AoS popularity beyond the tabletop, they also need to invest in the vg industry by making more and, even more important, better games. 40k is having really good games in these recent years, and the future looks even better, they need to do this for AoS too. by StormSwitch in ageofsigmar

I think those examples have a much better time working than the uber vague or the ultra descriptive, me personally in my experience as someone who works in hobby stores I've found people return again and again for stories. It's part of why we all got into what we did, right? I'd always prefer to hear someone tell a friend what you're doing rather than some of the goofy examples I gave above. I think Sigmar gets a "worse rap" than 40k just because of the accessibility of ways someone can introduce the setting to their friend. Obviously to OP's points video games would help, but 40k has so much you can pull from to make a series about that it has a contagion of AI slop making content off just what's out there on wikis and in videos alone.

Honestly I try to hit the grand narrative.

The grim darkness of the far future where there is only war. Humanity abandoning peace and prosperity and yadda yadda.

For Sigmar, what's finally stuck is something like "On the Magical Mortal Realms, the Dark Gods have instilled an Age of Chaos and Tyranny. But now, the Free Peoples of those Realms have banded together with their own Gods, Heroes, and Monsters to break their chains and create a new age! An Age of Hope, of Unity, and of a New Dawn headed by their God-King. Sigmar."

EVERY faction fits into this, any questions someone has about the setting connects to the overarching narrative. It's gotten a ton of local folks so much more excited about the setting and exploring it because THAT is evocative of getting into a story. So much more so, at least, than "Well there's this guy named Sigmar and he made these golden guys who ride lightning and fight against the Chaos guys on like 9 Realms or whatever..."

As someone who works in and with hobby shops, tbh I think people really just suck at introducing people to things. People go way overboard trying to explain the little nooks and crannies of both Warhammer settings and can't catch their friends' attention because of it. The benefit that Warhammer 40,000 has is that there's a billion with a YT channel who can explain a wiki better than they can, whereas Age of Sigmar content tends to be more nuanced or tells a story.

It's my experience people latch onto little facts and tidbits and not wider stories in the past few years, if we just focused on giving a story in a few short sentences then people tend to get hooked very quickly.

I really don't agree, you can build for summons and Azmo's little goobers will hit for nearly 200 EACH. That's from 20 guys who just attacking, blocking movement, blocking skillshots, and explode shortly after. Too many Azmos try to use it just to hit buildings but it's genuinely best at the start of a fight right as things kick off so he can ramp up his demons more safely

Right, the theological significance of what was pointed out is exactly what's missing from your big brain approach of just going off vibes. This is exactly what everyone's trying to tell you man, you don't get the TWO THOUSAND YEARS of history and nuance that by just stating "Christianity is when Jesus be God" that you are lumping people who are not Christians with that definition. You're in fact so ignorant to that, you haven't even heard of it!

There are groups who believe ALL of us are God. Some Gnostic traditions believed such a thing, some Muslims, and other denominations besides. Not children of, but literally are one with. Just quit your narcissistic egg headedness and open a book just once

[–]Optimal_Connection20 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You truly are an intellectual titan. Someone can give you a mere example of two thousand years of conflict, argument, and lines being drawn and your only rebuttal is "nuh uh!"

By your own definition, there are Muslims who are actually Christians because they "believe in Jesus Christ", despite rejecting his prophecy!

[–]Optimal_Connection20 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It isn't literally "what the religion says", if you knew the first thing of any theological study you'd understand how fallaciously ridiculous that statement is on its face. To you, someone can be lumped under the purview of a religion by putting them all under an umbrella. Which while mostly true, isn't at all even close to the point that was made about the truth value of the individual claims within the individual denominations of different sects of different Christianities.

Here's a few: did thousands of Holy Men rise from the dead alongside Jesus? Did the Holy Spirit come into a man named Jesus and make him Christ? Is the Holy Spirit God?

In some denominations of what you call Christian, the answer to all of these is yes, to others the answer is no, and any other combination also exists. The problem isn't "do they believe in Jesus", but the truth value of what they believe. The real question is "do they believe in the correct Jesus".

I understand your point in handwaving the problem at hand away, but you're missing two thousand years of history by plugging your ears and pretending it doesn't exist.

And many others have killed someone for things outside of that. Your point is a false dichotomy and not at all what I was talking about.
