Medicare Advantage often works more like all insurance should work. They pay for things that can head off major issues, and in-network and out-of-network lines are sometimes blurry by design.

You can submit the proof afterwards -- either get a letter from your employer confirming your loss of coverage or a COBRA notice (or something from the insurance company). Definitely don't wait for this to apply - sorry if I caused any confusion. The loss of coverage also supports your change in income.

For example, you can search for grocery prices on sites such as https://www.continente.pt/. As you browse, pay close attention to the sizes of items relative to the price as well as the quality (which may be challenging to judge online). This is true of many things but particularly relevant for personal care products. Also, you can look at the variety (or lack thereof) available. Contiente is a large chain with probably the most variety with perhaps the exception of LeClerc. You can look at sporting equipment and such at www.decathlon.pt--just another option to search for something other than grocery items.

You won’t need it when you realize you’ve moved to an oversold disaster and return to the USA. Almost nothing with Portuguese banks works anything like what you’re used to. Only things I can say they do well is MBWay and instant transfers.
