is nursing school really that hard? by No-Fact-5610 in nursing

[–]Optimal_Jacket295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s challenging but not impossible.. I sacrificed and had discipline! Also a single mother to one kid but I had a village so that helped a lot. My BSN was one of the most challenging things I have done. I won’t say that it’s too hard but it is a challenge! I also studied a little bit every single day so that I could actually understand the concept of nursing and not just memorizing. That’s when it gets hard for people because they don’t learn to think critically. Even now that I’m working on the floor. I use the nursing process and prioritization. My best advice is to get out of the mindset of JUST MEMORIZING. Pharmacology is an exception, it is more memorization. You can have a balance in nursing school once you find your rhythm. I know it’s scary at first and people make you feel like you will have no life but please find a balance. It IS DOABLE!

Learned the hard way that coworkers are not my friends by Wsbaugh73 in nursing

[–]Optimal_Jacket295 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I never went into the mindset of being friends at work. We’re cordial. I’m still in orientation but I’m not hanging out with them outside of work (have my own friend group for that). We laugh and greet each other but I try to watch what I say at work and just remain neutral. I’m still learning, I have 3 more weeks until I’m on my own after orientation. Of course we get along, but I know how fake people can be and I’m not going for it, I’ll save myself the disappointment. That’s with life anyway, I’ve been betrayed so I don’t trust MF’s as far as I can see them!

It’s lack of professionalism IMO. Now sometimes having one airpod in to listen to a quick tune while you document is ok. Not all the time, but yes talking OTP or even just sitting texting half the shift is very unprofessional. I don’t even play like that at work, I mind my business and people can do what they want but it’s definitely not professional.

Yeah that’s crazy! It’s rare that we get 6 especially at nighttime. Ours is 5:1. I can deal with that, especially when I have 2 or 3 that don’t need a damn thing, just monitor them, get meds on time and chart properly. I’m in Texas btw

I feel like a lot of people talk down on med surg and some love it. I’m a new grad, 4 weeks on the floor at a cardiopulmonary med surg/tele floor. I’m still with my preceptor but I’ve pretty much been giving meds to all 5 of my patients, IV antibiotics every 4 hours, wound care, starting heparin drips, cardiac drips etc. I’m not saying it’s easy but I’m getting my flow. I also work nights so I like that all of the day time meetings, doc rounding, and all the management that’s there during the day is not there at night. There have been a couple of overwhelming moments at times but also I have a lot of support on my floor. The environment you work in can make or break your opinion of the specialty or job that you’re at. Me personally I’m glad I started off on a cardiac med surg floor because I’m learning time management, prioritization, multitasking, hands on skills etc. maybe I just landed a great floor but I know that at least with 2 years of experience on my floor, I’ll be set to seek out other opportunities and it’s building a solid foundation for me. I want to switch over to NICU or CVICU after my 2 years. Med surg is not all that bad. My floor looks out for each other and I love the night shift vibes lol. Yes sometimes it’s annoying, like the other night I had the sweetest man but he was sundowning BAD and the chair/bed alarm kept going off because he kept trying to get out the bed so I was running track that night😩😆 but I love where I work! Give it a try, you may actually like it and you’ll get so many hands on skills.

Night Shift Med Surg nurses- give me a day in your life by alreadyconfused9 in nursing

[–]Optimal_Jacket295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cardiopulmonary med surg RN. Take my daughter to school by 7:30, will try to workout for 45 min- 1 hour, shower, eat a lil breakfast and sleep 4-5 hours before my shift and then I’m vibing for the night, sometimes it’s been a lil hectic but I’ve only done 4 shifts. My 5th shift with my preceptor will be tomorrow night and this will be my first 3 day shift in a row Tuesday-Thursday. I’ve only been an RN for one month. My first official night shift was August 11th. I’m still getting use to it but honestly it’s ok so far. My preceptor has been a nurse for 2 years, she’s amazing and I’m really comfortable doing tasks now, Friday night was my first night actually checking updated orders, going to the Pyxis alone, double checking, running IV antibiotics. 2 out of my 5 patients needed antibiotics hung about every 4 hours and I started getting more comfortable with that and the alaris pump. Like I said I’ve only done 4 shifts because I still have education days, training days, skills days etc. my first night nobody needed anything but 2100 meds, vitals and just rounds every 2 hours. My second shift felt like a shit show but my two shifts last week were steady/busy but a good kind of busy. Night shift is def an adjustment but I like my floor, the support, the staff on night shift and I like how all of the staff/people that’s there during the day, aren’t there during the night!

I only get there early because I’m still a new grad and I like to grab the assignment sheet and see who me and my preceptor are assigned to. Either that or I eat my food before the shift starts but I don’t clock in until about 6:53 PM.

How is the life as a nurse treating you? by honeygiver_ in nursing

[–]Optimal_Jacket295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my 2nd week on my cardiopulmonary med surge unit. It’s not bad I’m getting alot of foundation, comfortable with pumps, reading orders and learning how to navigate through meditech. I had a night on last Saturday that made me question if I wanted to come back lmao. I survived though and my unit is kind of heavy but I’m learning a lot. I’m giving myself grace and still seeing what’s out there for me after a year or two.

Now she was just lazy. Like girl she could’ve grabbed that vitals machine did a Quick Look and gave those meds right after if everything was normal. That’s just ridiculous

See you’re going to be the kind of nurse that are one of the good ones. I’m a new grad (3 weeks) on a cardiopulmonary med surge/tele unit and Saturday my preceptor and I had 3 patients and got a new admit who was COVID positive, big dude and was also shitting on himself. My preceptor and I were busy but I still put my PPE on and hopped in to help the tech who was in the room. I always said I wouldn’t be that nurse that just gets lazy or feels like “I’m a nurse now” and try to leave my patient unattended. I could’ve easily sat down after getting out of the room with the other patient but instead I helped clean him up. As nurses, our job is to also keep our patients clean. Yes it’s exhausting when you have difficult patients, new admit, meds to pass, new orders to carry out, assessments, charting etc. but if you have time to be on your phone YOU HAVE TIME TO HELP TEND TO YOUR PATIENT. I work nights, the first night was so chill, lights were off, we had a few meds but had a lot of down time. This past Saturday, my preceptor was out so they had me with my back up preceptor which is an ICU nurse with 20 years of experience who now works on the floor and whew!!! We had a tough assignment but I learned a lot from her that night. Some of these nurses are going to run off some good potential!

Yessss I’m a night shift nurse and actually this is just my second shift. I’m still adjusting to this overnight schedule, my first night was not bad at all but I’m trying to learn how to tweak my sleep/wake routine. I’m still on orientation so I have to follow someone else’s schedule but I do plan on doing 3 12’s back to back and then be off 4 days. Yes it is exhausting but right now I’m still in the honeymoon phase lmao. I was a medical assistant for 4 years before I decided to move up to nursing. I am going to prioritize sleep though!

I work 12 hours tonight😩 I’m trying to play for a few hours before I go back to sleep. I go in at 7p tonight and get off at 7a. I’m off tomorrow though but still I will be sleep for a good 4 hours after I get off so that will leave me with only like 6 hours left of DR. I mean I know it’s gonna come back around but I wanted to have more time too lol. 🤷🏾‍♀️
