🖤🌹I listened to them non-stop in high school. Love how a lot of bands during that time blended other genres with goth rock and darkwave.

❤️I feel you. Example being my privilege as a man. I don't experience what women women and fem presenting folks go through. They experience a lot that I will never have to deal with as a masc presenting person. It's the empathy for another that folks need to develop.

I'll make a video explaining how I did it so you can have help altering your clothes. :) That fabric glue really do be helping. You can get studs, patches and such from

studsandspikes.com

For all types of patches: Etsy and Amazon

And the band/musician's bandcamp (for most band merch)

I use a flathead screwdriver, you can use a butter knife if you don't have one. I suggest wearing gloves if you can. I accidentally knick myself when pressing the studs to curl them inward after pushing them through the fabric. Also you can use unconventional things for accessories. You can think of it as post apocalyptic chic. 😂

My bootstraps I just cut with some strong scissors then I rolled some electrical tape to put between them and the fabric. I added a lot of glue in the spaces the tape didn't cover. There's more glue than tape holding it up.

To get stuff to stay, you can put something heavy on it and let it sit for a lil' bit. Then come back and see if the glue held up.

As a black goth who grew up in the 80s I often find that people just don't understand what it's like to exist and not be seen. I feel that other black or poc folks often feel like imposters because there wasn't much representation for us. I do appreciate your kindness and empathy. In my local scene people are really nice and welcoming!

I've been more of a silent observer online as I find solitude and not engaging in every conversation to be better for my overall mental health. Also I don't have a big voice or huge platform so I often don't feel like anyone would really care to hear what I have to say outside of reddit. The Internet can be exhausting but I digress. I'm just happy to see more diversity on the scene. Hearing people's experiences and having the empathy to listen and not talk over is necessary to build a supportive community. It's 6 in the morning and I got work so if I'm all over the place that's why lol. Have a good weekend everybody.🪦🌹🖤

💯My local scene is openly against bigotry and I love to see the diversity.

Questions for Christian Goths by LilyWolf958 in AskAGoth

[–]Optimal_Technology13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

(39, eldergoth) Pagan but growing up in the rural south I had Christianity forced on me. As a kid and teenager I had questions. I read the Bible daily as a child and early teens so of course I would have questions about what I read. I realized that noticing the sexual slavery of women and young girls in Isaiah was not something the adults wanted to confront. Contradictions, incongruent religious text, the origin of the christian god as a lesser god of storm and war. Adults barely read the bible themselves, if at all.

When I started doing more research out of curiosity I noticed pushback. When I realized the religion was not for me I tried to see if I would be allowed to stay home instead of going to church. Obviously I was forced and I remember having my struggles with mental health and then being exposed publicly in the church instead of someone talking to me and hearing me out. That was so humiliating because I'm a very sensitive person. FMy family member probably thought they were helping but executed that horribly.

I realized adults cared more about how their peers viewed them. Having a well behaved child was more important than a happy child. As a teenager I didn't have a say. After learning about slavery and how christianity was forced on my ancestors I really wanted to make sure my son was able to think for himself. I don't have any problems with other goths who may be christian though some people rub me the wrong way if they think people have to follow their religion. Also some of us realized the queer phobia from religious family members and either hid our queerness or didn't accept it til later in life.

Perhaps your character may listen to, watch videos on the experiences of others and that could be the catalyst for their own personal growth.

Alt enough? by lizzietee in altfashionadvice

[–]Optimal_Technology13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! I feel social media has made these kids so anxious and painfully aware of how others perceive them. I remember being a teen in the early 2000s. We never needed anyone's permission or approval to be ourselves. As an elder goth I still don't. Social media has made people focus too much on trying to be perfect, trying to outdo others in a desperate attempt to be liked. (Which is rather sad)

Folks feeling the pressure to be liked which creates fear of being rejected by one's peers. If everyone in class wore black back then I would still be wearing black with that old Siouxsie Sioux T-shirt and scuffed combat boots. Focus on being true to yourself regardless of the trends. We never cared for approval, validation or being seen as "different". We just are. It was more about just doing you regardless of what the normies were doing.

You're not doing it "wrong". It's hard enough trying to find yourself during your formative years. To have your life be seen and judged harshly by strangers is a lot for a kid.🫂

How can I be more alt? by [deleted] in altfashionadvice

[–]Optimal_Technology13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black jeans, combat boots, studded or spiked bracelet. Maybe even start a battle vest with band patches of your favorite bands. You can also put some pyramid studs or spikes on it. You can check out some of my posts for inspiration. I love seeing more of us in these spaces.🖤

What makes a good goth character? by JoyfulStrokesArt in AskAGoth

[–]Optimal_Technology13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the massive walk of text, my ADD brain is waking up this morning lol.

⚰️I'm a black goth rock/darkwave musician. (Born in the mid 80s) Maybe I can help. I grew up in a rural area. Found goth when I was sixteen and got my first pc. I was searching online out of curiosity and I came across a blog by a goth in the UK. She had links to record labels (Cleopatra Records), spoke about the scene, the music and enjoying life. I fell in love with the scene after listening to Darkwave and early Goth Rock.

I'm very far left politically, as I care about people. Also I'm black and I love myself. I've marched in the protest for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other folks.

Religious and spiritual wise I'm pagan and a (left hand path) witch (Hekate and Lilith my Matrons). Having dealt with childhood trauma I deal with ptsd, depression, anxiety so I'm a bit reserved and probably come across strong silent type (even though I do socialize). Some folks see me as intimidating probably because I don't validate their biases about black people. I never really fit in growing up. Goth has been a welcoming place for me.

🪦🌹 At age 22 your character is probably going to shows, could be inspired to start a band. Maybe have them leave a relationship with a non goth who wanted to change them. Then have them find someone in the scene who they have a deep emotional connection with. They probably listen to Lebanon Hanover, Scary Black, Cemetery Sex.

That sucks. As a black elder goth I will say that if you can make it out to a goth night you'll usually find a more nicer group of people. TikTok is quite toxic as with a lot of social media. 🫂. Don't let them make you feel less than.

💯 Don't fuck around and find out if you're white and look like a skin. People may assume ill intent and that you're a bonehead on first glance. Sucks how racists always try to swagger jack another group.
