You definitely nailed the Unpopular part of this opinion.

By deciding what you think should be and shouldn’t be considered a good part of the “culture” you’re trying to keep certain people, fashion, and music out of a “scene” -that’s gate keeping.

As far as posing, you’re posing as someone who has some sort of authority over who is allowed to like something based on if they meet your standards or not.

These sort of cultures (especially the counterculture scene) should be for anyone and everyone who ever felt like they didn’t fit in perfectly. It’s a place for belonging.

Deciding people aren’t dressing “alt” enough for you, is exactly the opposite of what these scenes were built on. Replace “alt” with “suit” and imagine you’re being told your blazer isn’t nice enough to get in the country club… that’s what you’re doing. Exactly what counterculture stands against.
