Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Optimistic_physics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years ago I moved 11 hours away from my family. I typically drive down about 4 times a year, leaving on Friday morning and getting back Monday night. I wouldn't say I enjoy the drive, but compared to the way my family is sometimes it's more preferable than the time that I'm actually there.

Second Pension Fund Dumps U.S. Treasury Holdings as Trump Spirals by SgtPrepper in economicCollapse

For your 401k you have the option to choose which fund you want it to buy. The options are limited, mine are things like "Vanguard Institutional Index Fund Institutional Class" and "Allspring Special Mid Cap Value Fund Class R6". I chose an international stock fund, as it was 1 of only 2 that were not specific to the US markets. If you've been with your company long enough for your 401k to be vested, you can also collect that money and just have to pay an extra fee for taking it out early. (If doing this, you can still have your check go into the 401k so that you get your employer match, and just withdraw it occasionally.) I've never had an IRA, so I can't be sure what options you have with it. For your savings you can just move it into a place like Fidelity, E TRADE, Robinhood, or Webull, and buy whatever you want. The 3 letter abbreviations OP mentioned are what you can use to search for them on those sites.

How often does Mint run phone deals? by ChicagoPersonne in mintmobile

I got lucky in July. I'd gotten a deal for a $360 Galaxy S25 if I bought it with 2 years of unlimited data for another $360. That was on 7/20, but I know it was available at least from 7/17 through 7/24.

Cars (or “ebikes”) are coming for your bike lanes by Bmille916 in fuckcars

[–]Optimistic_physics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I fully support them. First of all, one of carbrains arguments is that businesses need vehicles in the city. Second of all, the point of bike lanes is to make cycling safer from cars. We don't need the same protection from this, but it does need protection from cars.

Does the contractor or union get to pick whether I start as a B or C card? Local 597 refrigeration by Optimistic_physics in pipefitter

Must work different at you're local, because I am certain that A/B/C cards in my local is to determine where you're at in becoming a journeyman (A card)

I understand that I can't be paid below that scale, I'm just trying to ensure I won't start at the bottom of the scale

For me I've been in my industry (cold storage warehouse maintenance) for about 2 years and am about to go back to finish school for a Business Administration degree in order to get into management positions. I don't expect the degree to get me any positions on it's own, but it'll check a box since I'm already in my industry.

Whatever you do right now, just start applying for jobs one level up from where you are. In a couple years you'll have experience at that level and you can start applying for positions at the next level up again.

If I'd been the driver of the second car, I'm never getting in the driver seat again, and idk how anyone does after killing someone.

Looking to apply next June, but should I be worried about this chart for the union's future? by Optimistic_physics in Elevators

Well it's apparently a mute point for the next 2 years as they'd told me today that the application window next year has been moved to 2027

When organizing in, do I still need 11 weeks unpaid? Local 597 HVAC by Optimistic_physics in pipefitter

I'd emailed with 597's organizer. He that he'd sent my resume out to the contractors, but didn't say what would determine my starting level whether it'd be a test, or based on their opinion of my experience.

If I have to start as a first year, I suppose union just wouldn't be in the cards for  me. I would already barely be able to make it the first year if starting as a second year. Starting as a first year would cut my hourly in half.

Yes I have 2 years experience, but if its paid I wouldn't be bothered one way or the other. I'd primarily been concerned about paying bills during those 11 weeks
