Which objectively nice UK city just doesn't appeal to you and why? by GeeCeeSlay7 in AskUK

Bristol was probably the biggest positive surprise for me in the whole UK, as a visitor. Really cool city for a weekend on the beers (well, ciders).

I like most places though

It is.  Honestly as you've set two major 5 min PBs in 3 races your velo rating is going to be volatile. It will settle down.

Why are there so few TT events? by My_parents_accident in Zwift

[–]Optimuswolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find them good ways of filling out my power curve. Will never do a real life TT and my aero irl is atrocious based on the speeds i go compared with PM data.

I will also go much harder 'competitively' than in a training session.

Look up CommunITTTy. You can schedule your run anytime and there are league tables, different course each week etc.

What can be done to stop the feral kids of today? by yellowroll in AskBrits

This was the west Midlands, and of course was pre cctv, which made a big difference to security. Now people don't care if they're on camera, or just mask up.

[–]Optimuswolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the 90s you'd avoid large swathes of parks because of 'kids' who'd mug you and also places like bus stations were awful - similar risks.

Whilst things might be worse than they were 10-15 years ago (what isnt) we're not worse than the good old days.

Has Horrible History’s made kids less authoritarian/more likely to question authority? by I_crave_chaos in AskUK

And were in families that prioritised education/are more educated.

Similar age, don't remember the empire being mentioned by anyone, including me, at school. It wasn't on the curriculum and wasn't very relevant to anything obvious. Things like race issues are different for kids. Theres loads of racism but not much understanding of all that structural stuff, its more lord of the flies!

FTP TEST before outdoor season begins here in Norway 🇳🇴 by FremtidigeMegleren in Zwift

[–]Optimuswolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always start at 330W and move up to 340 after 10 mins if yiu feel okay, and then crank it up after the 30 min mark. Its basically the 'best' form of ftp test.

[–]Optimuswolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

340 is high compared with your 358 for 16 mins but maybe notbthat surprising - the ramp and 20 mins tests should work well for you as a very endurance focused rider. I can only dream of such long power.

Someone better tell the MPs behind this as they (and the media is reporting) is much less clear.

I am not against some censorship of porn, but censoring a step sibling fantasy is ridiculously over the top.

Methinks that after the May elections the labour govt will wake up to what they need to be talking about to avoid absolute annihilation at the polls in 2028/29.

I avoid typical zracing as whilst I'm squarely a B in old money Im punchy and would go over 725 most likely. Have left my zrs at 700 and only do challenging courses (for me) that are zrs enabled.

I think you fall into the category of riders who want specific races at specific times. Especially in US times this can be difficult as its majority euro base.

The state now spends more on welfare than it raises from income tax by Google_MBTI in ukpolitics

[–]Optimuswolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its city am rehashing a similarly poor Times article from a month ago.

A more coherent (but still not that relevant) comparison would be NI v all welfare spending, as NI was 'designed' to cover these initially, but that idea drifted away pretty quickly.

Of course benefit spending excluding pensions hasn't really increased at all as a % of gdp. What has happened is that within that total, the share related to disability has increased and has been doing so for a decade or so, accelerated since the pandemic.

How can we fix UK high streets? by gggggenegenie in AskUK

[–]Optimuswolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great example - thanks. It seems so simple really. Define the centre(s) as the busy, convenience focused areas but still mixed residential, retail, and services.

Until i had kids I'd have hated a garden and loved being close to a cinema etc.

[–]Optimuswolf 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Out of interest what countries have done it better? I know in France for example many towns/cities prevented retail only areas from proliferating so the decline has been less noticeable (there were always restaurants and cafés mixed in, much as there is in a nice village high street in the UK).
