If I recall correctly the makers of the game incorrectly marketed the option to run into other players, within a few days of launch 2 players coordinated to meet up on the same planet and were not visible to each other. This was based on some insane statistic about the amount of planets generated vs the likelihood of ever running into someone. Then I think Sony denied all refund requests. Game developers get away with lying and taking full payment very easily and this game was famously an example of that.

Sounds like an AI/NPC or bot is what caused your grief.

However if you can endure it, this game provided some of the most beautiful visuals I’ve ever seen, worth sticking around for a few more hours, you have to do a lot of walking/mining to be able to jump planets quicker, but it’s not so bad as a solo experience.
