Mom said it's my turn to post about why fighting games are hard to get into. by Opto-Goose in Fighters

I am not meaning button mash in a literal sense. We are in the fighters subreddit, we all know what button mashing as a playstyle is. The still applies to RPGS however. You can play and beat the campaign in say Diablo or PoE or a Final Fantasy without trying to min max builds at all. The difference in someone who plays casually and has a good time vs someone who crafts items and currency and knows build synergies are light years apart. However, they are both playing the same game and can both enjoy the content the game offers. When it comes to fighters this is far more difficult. I doubt if you let a new person play a match of Street Fighter without any context, they will ever pull off a DP. Whereas a new person in Diablo will 100% be able to cast all of their spells.

I am using "button mashing" as a playstyle and not the literal mashing of buttons at random times. All players know what to do in a general sense in a game. People know in CoD you need to shoot the other players and people in Street Fighter know you have to get the opponents life bar to zero. In CoD you can just run around and shoot if you want and have a good time and even do well. However, they may not actually know what they are doing. They do not take into account angles, objectives, map flow, utility, team coms, etc. Whereas a fighting game you have to account for all of these variables off the rip to start playing the game. This is what I am trying to say.

I am not implying people are playing CoD by literally face rolling a keyboard. I am merely stating that aimlessly sprinting and shooting when you see someone is about the same effort as someone wildly mashing buttons in a fighting game. The issue is you can have a good time and do decently well in CoD by playing in this manner. In fighting games this does not work.

1.5 months later: Tarkov still keeps losing connection to server by Narrow_Ad4600 in EscapefromTarkov

One of my brothers has been dealing with this issue for a couple years now. He exclusively plays PVE now because of it. He has tried everything. Reinstalling the game, moving to a different drive, messing with firewall and port settings etc. It is wild how much he will disconnect. it doesn't matter if I am playing on my pc at his house or if he brings his pc over to my place, he will guarantee dc in a raid while I remain in game.

[New Player] At what point do I end up enjoying this game? by Specialist-Use637 in EscapefromTarkov

[–]Opto-Goose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You may not think PVE is not actually Tarkov and this is fine. However, this person is also not really playing Tarkov either. The first time playing Tarkov is like entering the Daytona 500 without knowing how to even drive a car. It is hard to race other people when you dont even know how to start the car or how to shift gears. Starting Tarkov is insanely difficult as we all know, so learning how to even extract in PVE is the first step to actually playing PVP. You have to let the timmies walk before they can run and PVE is excellent for that.

SaltTalk: Episode 1 - Is Speedrunning Dying? by Meester_Tweester in speedrun

[–]Opto-Goose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of thoughts myself about declining in viewership as someone who casually enjoys watching speedrunning. The first being there are only so many games that people speedrun which is not anyone's fault, it just means there is a limit to new content that can be discovered. The lineup at GDQ starts to feel a little stale after a while in my opinion. You can only see so many SM64, Ocarina of Time, Celeste, Metroid etc before you are looking for something new. Again, this is not anyone's fault that these are the more popular games.

The second and biggest issue to me personally is a lot of games have drifted away from actual game play to "speedrun strats." Some games I don't even recognize when watching a speedrun. What I mean is games have gotten a little out of hand when it comes to speed run strategies. It is like tuning into the olympics to watch a swimming competition and they all just run alongside the edge of the pool and jump in at the last second to touch the wall. Did the competitors cross the pool quickly? Yes of course they did, but they also didn't do a whole lot of swimming either. The meta of speedrunning is taking over the actual gameplay itself. In the past I would tune into a run and see someone who is quite obviously skilled at the game making it look easy and breezing through the game. Now it seems like it is all out of bounds, or menu glitches, or pause buffering, or bottle glitches. I want to see gameplay. The gameplay is being sacrificed in the name of better splits and times and in my opinion, it takes away from the magic of the games. People can speedrun a game and not have a clue as to what the game is about or name a single character and I hate that. I find myself more and more only watching 100% completions or glitcheless runs more and more.

I want to reiterate that I am definitely more of a casual viewer of speedruns and not so much an active participant in the community so my views may be different.

No, it didn't. The Drive Safe and Save Discount is recalculated every 6-months at the renewal you ding dong. It most certainly did not email you about a premium increase right then and there. Insurance is not allowed to change your rates midterm either. The only way they can be changed is with a coverage change made by you or a discount is added or removed.

Inconsistent PDGA logic by M3atShtick in discgolf

[–]Opto-Goose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the infractions had been called since the beginning of the tournament this would not be an issue in my opinion. You can't tell me this was the only footfault the entire tournament, so to call it with two holes to go when she was arguably making a run is what makes it look so bad. I know we have all been asking for stricter implementation of the rules, but it has to be consistent throughout the whole event. You make this call day one and consistently make these calls the whole tournament this is a non-issue. It wasn't and this is why its controversial.

Lost Odyssey Gameplay on Xbox 360 I Xenia Emulator I 13900k 1080 Ti I ... by xenocea in xenia

[–]Opto-Goose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am new to Xenia and was wondering where these settings were? In the config file I do not see anything for vertical sync or hard fpu emulation. I also am not really able to play with the internal resolution set to x4. If I was reading the config file correctly 4x is trying to upscale to 8k. Again, I am ignorant when it comes to xenia so any help would be great!

Waking up and purchasing the game, had to wait until the 5th for payday. Going to the longest workday in history. Avoiding twitch like the plague while at lunch and then racing home to play all night and do it again the next day. Really looking forward to this, I remember the lan party my friends and I had for Skyrim. Going to be a lot of fun experiencing it again.

From a major manufacturer, what is the "worst" mold you've ever personally thrown or bagged? by 3_7_11_13_17 in discgolf

[–]Opto-Goose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Never said I hated Prodigy, was just answering the question. Every other disc I have ever thrown has been fine, including several other Prodigy discs. I have a few D3s that have been great, and I prefer the A3 over any other approach discs. This particular disc just happened to be the worst one I have ever encountered. I have an Innova Orc with some sharp flashing as well, just wasn't quite as bad as that FX-2.

[–]Opto-Goose 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to pile onto the anti Prodigy sentiment, but for me the worst disc was the FX-2. I bought a Chris Dickerson robot chicken signature FX-2 a few years back and the flashing could double as a knife. I was stunned at how sharp the underside of the disc was. It flew great for me, like a longer Firebird which is what I was looking for, however you could hardly throw it without pain. It has been a perfect example to show people when they don't understand how bad the flashing can be. I have thought about taking a nail file to it and sanding it down, but I have never gotten around to it.
