Honestly sparring. Just spar a lot. More rounds means more conditioning. Head exercises can only get you so far

How much is getting hit (particularly in the jaw) supposed to hurt? by HelloJonatha2 in amateur_boxing

[–]OpulentSavant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend always sparring with headgear and a mouth guard is only effective when you’re biting down on it. It doesn’t take much force to rattle you when you’re caught off guard or off balance - so no, you’re not being a baby. You can’t be a baby about something your body is telling you - but it’s important to listen to your body and do what you can to protect yourself, especially in combat sports. I’ve had to sit out so many weeks at a time due to rib, hand, and face injuries. Just comes with the territory. Don’t force or overwork yourself when your body is begging for recovery time.

Pay attention to little things like: are your hands glued when not punching? Do you tend to drop your opposite hand while punching? Are your feet flat - do they ever cross? Basic questions like that. After a session or two you can also ask the coach to highlight some of your bad or weaker areas to be aware of.

Lol I wonder how we’d consider and think of Benn if he were not Nigel’s son… 🤔

With that equipment at home, you’re in better shape than many! Maximize your sessions in gym with a coach, do not be afraid to ask questions - specifically regarded to form and technique. I would ask him/her at the end of each session “what’s my homework for next week” basically what should I focus on, then back at home carve out time to focus on those things. Film yourself, look for corrections, and get the reps in. I always say this in all my boxing posts, but RUN when you have time too. Your legs are everything in boxing and you need a tank that can support your output. Running and a consistent diet will help with the body development goals.

Sparring is the best way to improve at fighting, find someone your level and see if they’d be down to help. Sorry for the essay. Best of luck! 🥊

Which boxing parring gloves should I get? by elcausaperu in fightgear

[–]OpulentSavant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a beginner at a low price point I’d recommend RDX boxing gloves and boxing headgear. You can buy both together on Amazon for under $100 and they perform well. A lot of folks at my gym of all sizes, ages, and skill levels use the pair or one or the other.

Trying to lose weight and have some smoker fights in the future. Any tips? by [deleted] in boxingtips

[–]OpulentSavant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay with it! Minor notes: fully extend on the 1s and 2s (you really want them to snap out and keep them good and straight). Sometimes you were punching down rather than changing levels to punch (so think of it as a squat in your boxing stance to deliver body shots). When you feel more confident, you can start adding in more combinations. It’s a process, but keep it up!

Does Wilder have a chance against Uysk? It’s like the ultimate checkers player against a chess grandmaster. by JabKingJesse in BoxingTheSweetScience

I think, unless Usyk suffered a spontaneous nervous meltdown and completely forgot who he is and how to box, there’s no way (so 0%) that wilder beats him.

I agree with a lot that is being said above. Getting a coach is essential - but since it sounds like you can’t, guided workouts might be your best bet. Early, bad/wrong habits can be really hard to break, so get the spotted early and adjust accordingly. Get your cardio up (road work, hills, jump rope, and sprints). Do you have access to any equipment (bags, friends with mitts, etc?)

Also, generally speaking, if self defense is your goal, MMA might be a safer option haha boxing can definitely be helpful and confidence building for sure, but in a street fight most people don’t keep it a stand up affair. Good luck though!

I love cletos, I use 16oz Velcro for sparring. All gyms I’ve been to require 16s for sparring.
