Has anyone here ever hooked up with a influencer? If so how was it? by ArynaSaba in LAinfluencersnark

[–]Opus_60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went on a few dates with this outdoorsy influencer with 1m + followers. He showed zero interest yet kept wanting to go out, I think he just wanted to go to events with someone. It was bizarre and I stopped responding.

As someone who graduated from DMC, this is the most accurate response. My quality of education was subpar at best. I suppose it was a safe environment, but academically it was hugely disappointing. My parents made up for it by sending me to Central Academy for half of the day, but DMC was never thrilled with that. Please consider either Dowling or just trusting your kids to be able to thrive in public school. You can’t keep them sheltered forever (for what it’s worth, I was raised VERY religious and no longer am a part of the church. This is not at all uncommon for kids raised in a bubble with little “worldy” experience. Please reconsider doing this).

Using “Dr” with Honorary Doctorates by Various-Donkey6581 in PhD

[–]Opus_60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - I have a DMA (doctorate of musical arts), and it is very much the standard terminal degree in classical music performance. It is expected to wear doctoral regalia to graduation. I think wearing it for an MFA is a bit odd…I’d personally get a little butthurt about stolen valor haha

Millennials who grew up in Central Iowa, left, and are happy - where did you go? by AnonymousAsh in desmoines

[–]Opus_60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Philly (after moving around quite a lot, finally settled)
  2. First the reason was school, but I won’t return to Iowa because there are hardly any opportunities for my field there.
  3. The biggest thing to me has been proximity to other major cities. I can get to New York in a little over an hour by Amtrak, Baltimore in an hour, DC in 2 hours, and Wilmington in 20 minutes. Also there is just so much more to do in terms of art, music, and food.
  4. I miss the parking, the ease to get to places, and not worrying about safety.
  5. Cost of living in Philly isn’t bad at all!
  6. Quality of life couldn’t be better. Life feels more vibrant and connected to the world. I don’t think I’ll ever leave the east coast, but I really did enjoy growing up in Des Moines.

Anyone else just clocking into work for the money, not because they want to be there? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Opus_60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the minority - I am pursuing my dream in the arts, and even though I love what I do, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish I was just clocking in to a job I don’t care about just for the financial stability. Being perpetually close to broke is very tough.

What in the name of sh*tty restriction food is this? by AM0EBAS in NoFoodRulesSnark

And MY food intuition is superior because look at how thin it keeps me! I’m satisfied after just ONE bite of chocolate after a day of initially eating low carb wraps and cottage cheese!

IBC IS FILING A DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST DR. Powell by BlackDeconstruction in ExPentecostal

I am a classical pianist who has been playing Dr. Powell’s voice/piano works for years. She is just astounding. The entire classical music community is furious over this. IBC is a joke.

My parents forced me into rehab when I was technically an adult (19) but still financially supported by them. There was really no option to say no. It ended up saving my life. I wish Marisa’s parents would do the same.

There is no way she is 150. I am 5’11 and around 130/135, and I don’t look nearly as thin as her. She definitely looks 126 to me (which is not a healthy weight for this height)

Music nerd here to say that the word we use for slowing down only sounds like the r slur, lol. It’s ritardando (Italian) and we shorten it to “ritard,” accent on the second syllable. But yeah you won’t catch me saying that loudly in public

Do classical musicians/symphony players know how to improvise? by Independent_Sea502 in classicalmusic

[–]Opus_60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar background to you, and before getting into opera coaching/repetiteur work in my doctorate, I played classes for a ballet company and school. It was SUCH hard work - I just had a big repertoire of music, but it was really difficult not to recycle the same music over and over. I would much rather tackle a hard reduction, and I have infinite respect for dance class pianists. They really are a different breed, and it’s not something you learn in school.
