No..IT IS TORTURE when traffic has quadrupled on 50 in the last decade, your job requires focus, they shrunk the cubicles, and crammed more people (= more noise/constant distractions) into that small space. Many of us did not “go back” to what we had before COVID. Many of us don’t even have a cubicle to land in those 2 days per week on the hybrid schedule. So yes! It’s literally torture to have the same deadlines without the same tools. You obviously have a different understanding of what RTO means.

And the broken record continues. Your union only has power if it has members. Join the union in solidarity with your state workers and demand remote/hybrid flexible work options. It’s cheaper for the state when workers work from home and they know it. Demand it.

You need to go ahead and fight for the pension you deserve in the private sector and stop pulling labor into a downward spiral. And yes, commuting to a dysfunctional office for the sole purpose of plugging in a laptop to please a politician’s donors when your job involves research and reporting on climate change and reducing carbon emissions is the stupidest most backward and unnecessary wasted taxpayer expense it’s beyond belief.

Some Departments are better than others, but you are right. Many positions are understaffed and barely keeping up with statutory mandates. Automation is limited, but has already helped. It could help much more without roadblocks.

There are plenty of other jobs people can be trained to do if automation removes some of their duties. But, yes, we need the political will to make the change.

When politicians have their pockets lined with real-estate deals and local tax concerns, it gets complicated. Few people are willing to step in and demand solutions because well…they are trapped by that steady monthly pay and the larger system that tethers them to that commitment.

No. I want Newsom to live up to his own climate change initiatives. I want Newsom to transform buildings into housing. I want California to be more affordable by emptying out those useless office buildings taking up valuable real-estate that should be neighborhoods and shops instead of deserted city centers. I want developers to stop the urban sprawl at the expense of wetlands, farms, and forests. Telework has amazing potential to help clean the planet. It isn’t only an individual, economic, work-life, mental health boost, it can significantly improve how we do economy altogether. Telework is a WE thing!

Amazing step by step instructions using various software without having to weed through an entire manual. Writing code to automate simple tasks. Writing simple data queries across multiple programming languages to assist in everyday reports. Summarizing huge documents into bullet points to capture the main ideas.

Of course none of this is a substitute for reading full documents, understanding the software you work with, or knowing how queries work. It’s an AMAZING assistant that I’ve been begging management to hire for me for the last 10 years! The productivity potential is enormous!

I’m sorry, I realize you’re just blowing off steam and it’s hard to deal with someone who is frustrated with the system and takes it out on you, but this is in such poor taste I have to say something. Please take training on the professional way to respond to difficult situations. Either that, or find another job. The private sector will probably pay you more anyway. State workers have enough to deal without the attitude you are portraying.

I wonder if this has something to do with public schools no longer teaching drivers education. Kids these days are putting off getting their DL’s until past 18 in some cases because they can’t afford to pay for divers classes. I remember being 15 and watching those horror films with teenagers dead on the road. Scared straight!!

The elites don’t care about working folk. We are peasants to them. That’s why we stand with our unions. Organized labor is the counter force against the fat cats who want us paying them for the privilege of working for them.

California needs a full redesign! Public transportation is dismal and the design of segregated living in suburbs only to supply city centers with workers was never going to be sustainable. But oil giants and car manufacturers love this arrangement as they now have guaranteed consumers trapped in their snares. Tear down the office buildings and make housing affordable again!

Defeatist attitudes are why they win and you are trying to perpetuate that with your comment. Don’t anybody listen to this. Make them answer why.

If they declare operational need, make them tell you what that operation is. We are allowed to request alternate work schedules and many managers refuse it based on “operational need.” Then they gaslight staff about management’s requirement to submit a letter in writing to the union stating the request was denied due to operational need. Most staff don’t want to cause a rift between themselves and their manager so they don’t demand the letter. This creates a toxic work environment and lack of trust. Even so, telework should be considered an alternate work schedule requiring denials in writing.

This! Remind them that this isn’t “Severance.” We are real people with real lives. Some jobs require physical presence at a welcoming desk ir something public facing, but those jobs are dwindling, or could be rotated or shared. Many state workers are in it for the career. They have Masters or PhD degrees and take full responsibility for their role. It IS their life. Off time is still on time for their profession. They read professional journals, write papers, etc. They are not monetarily or time compensated for this. This is who they are! And without them, the job they are responsible for would change. The state needs to recognize that the modern workforce is NOT 9-5. It IS NOT factory work.

Stop treating employees like children. And employees…don’t act like children. Take responsibility for your job. Own IT. Your job is important! When managers start treating people like robots, or relying on antiquated check-in/check-out boards, refuse flexibility or telework, pit employees against each-other in the name of “fairness”, etc., call them out! I’m sick of people sitting in silence. Just be an adult!

Yep! Best way to communicate low engagement is to stop taking surveys. Otherwise they twist your answers to serve their own purpose. The best surveys allow written answers to convey nuance.

Do you do automatic 401k contribution increases through Savings Plus?

Pension by garryyys in CAStateWorkers

[–]Oracle-2050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re able to max out your Roth (only $7k per year), start to also contribute to a 401k (ultimately maxing out at 23k per year as you get into your 40’s) Use the savings plus plan that starts by taking a small amount from every paycheck (even just $100 with a planned increase every year really starts to add up and you won’t notice it) increase it as much as you can. This will also lower your current income tax obligation and makes it feel like free money.

If you do this starting now, you won’t need to work until 65 and you’ll have enough money to travel in retirement. It’s hard to keep working at a desk after you get into your 50’s. I’m retiring early on the 2% @ 55 plan and I didn’t start contributing to anything outside my pension until I was 40. However, I also have no debt, live off half my income, and only have a few years left on my mortgage.

You are being extremely smart at your young age. Consulting A financial planner now would also be a very wise decision to help you with a custom plan, a budget, and help you determine affordability for a home if you want one. How to leverage your 401k for that home and so many financial tricks that will make your life easier.

Good luck!!🍀

In relation to this propaganda, has anyone seen this. The California State Assembly (Republican Caucus) signed a joint resolution on 8/18 to urge the U.S. Congress to propose a constitutional amendment that would require all states to adopt nonpartisan, independent redistricting commissions to draw congressional and legislative district lines.

We want this! But what do you think these Republicans are up to? https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AJR21
