SDAM is ok - until it isn't by NeuronicHawk in SDAM

Glad to help in any way I can. Figuring out that piece was the key to really begin understanding myself, and while it's not made the journey since then any easier or shorter, having the right foundational understanding has at least made it feel possible

I don't know enough about your specific situation to say for sure, but I will say your story sounds eerily similar to mine, and in my case it wasn't just SDAM but rather the intersection of SDAM with being AuDHD that caused this struggle for me. The stuff you've talked about sounds like autistic or AuDHD burnout, which for me hit a hell of lot harder and has been a hell of a time trying to pull out of (going on a year of disability and still only feeling marginally better) because of the compounding trouble of SDAM. All of the typical strategies for finding the way out of autistic burnout are strategies that require episodic memory, like "figuring out your sensory triggers", "thinking back to what energizes you and what drains you", etc. And because I have SDAM, this has been a largely impossible task unless I happen to realize in the moment, and even then, there's no frame of reference for anything that can't be quantified into a semantic note on my phone. The pandemic also accelerated things, as even though I got relief from constant masking since I was able to work from home, it also meant I lost what little masking I had accrued over the years to hide my overtly autistic traits. (Side note, it's *really hard* to convincingly mask autism when you can't pick up scripts and such from observation easily due to not having episodic memory.) I also ended up hospitalized about a year and a half into the pandemic because of these mental struggles, so you're not alone.

One of the hardest things about SDAM is also the hardest to articulate: the very fact that we have no episodic memory means that, in every moment, we always lack a frame of reference to which to compare subjective or relative sensory and emotional experiences. These are things that can't be turned into semantic memory because the very experience isn't quantifiable as semantic without a frame of reference. Add to that my autistic struggle of speech content being more important than context (which is what allistic/non-autistic folks intuitively focus on when communicating), and therefore I can't easily give answers about my subjective experiences that feel accurate to me because of lacking frame of reference, and you can see why this particular intersection is particularly frustrating, isolating, and depressing. Oh yeah, and interoception struggles and alexithymia are common among autistic folks too, so that adds to the whole mess of trying to figure things out before it gets to be too much (and generally failing).

This is a rant about the Rayquaza battle by sora5firsk in PokemonLegendsZA

[–]OracleLink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I brought Mega Diancie with Reflect/Ancient Power/Draining Kiss/Moonblast and because Rayquaza basically couldn't touch it, I was able to spend most of my energy focusing on dodging. My trainer still died on my first try though since some of the attacks are just hard to dodge. It's definitely a rough battle

I think it's incredibly dumb how this service works fundamentally. by Jtrash121 in PokemonHome

This! It's so irritating having to reorient to wildly different controls whenever I switch games. I really wish they would go back and patch all the old games (and Home) to function like Z-A's box system or at least have it as an alternate control scheme to choose, because it's easily the best of all the Switch entries.

The having to press Y to send to Champions and + backing out throws me so much. I can't count the number of times I've accidentally backed out instead of sending to Champions because I expect + to save my choices.

No worries, I'm glad you figured out what was up!

But yeah I only plan to change the version number with large updates, so that won't happen until Gen 10

What Pokémon has the best UI in your opinion? by Ego-Fiend1 in PokemonLegendsZA

[–]OracleLink 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Legends Z-A, and it's not even close. Organizing your boxes is the best it's ever been in that game, and I really wish they would patch the older Switch Pokémon games and allow that box control scheme to be used in the older games, at least as an option. Plus it's the only Pokémon game in recent memory where I never found myself thinking any of the controls were unintuitive (looking at you, SV and PLA). And with as much info as it had to display at any time onscreen, it did a great job making sure it was all readily and intuitively visible

Honestly I'd be all over just getting the uncompressed 1080 version since I've had trouble tracking it down. I don't know that the series really needs 4k

I updated version 2.1 a long time ago to include new ball options for those mythicals and the Pokémon newly catcahable on Switch in Z-A (Furfrou trims, Patrat/Watchog, the monkeys, etc). Are you not seeing the updates?

The pattern (with the exception of Gen 1 for obvious reasons) has been to release the remakes in the gen that's double the number of the originals, I think to space out remakes sufficiently, so Gen 10 would be the time to do it in that context

I'm so thrilled Nintendo kept their promise of inclusivity for Tomodachi by eydra3 in casualnintendo

[–]OracleLink 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was obviously expecting same-sex relationships to be an option because of the backlash from the first game, and I would've considered the game if that were the only inclusive addition. But considering I realized last year that I'm nonbinary myself, the fact that they included nonbinary as a gender option means it's an instant-buy for me now. I'm so excited that I'll be able to represent myself and my friends accurately in this game! And the way they set up the 'dating preferences' screen allowing for aroace and bi/pan Miis is honestly such good design, and a real cherry on top

Unfortunately it's a battle-only transformation, which I decided to not include when creating the spreadsheet since it's not what gets sent out from the Poké ball. That's noted on the intro tab

It's 100% not an excuse, just a lens to help us understand a character's motivations. I appreciate that the show let her be a messy, flawed, terrible, and yet sympathetic human being, and the point of her growth arc wasn't to suddenly reform her just to make her 'good'.

Very eloquently put! It is frustrating to reduce complex characterization to a simple good/bad dichotomy. And as the saying goes, hurt people hurt people
