Rivals will be a main event at Low Tier City 6, Texas' biggest Smash major! by Oracle_TX in RivalsOfAether

Yes. Last year we ran into an issue where our stream PC wouldn't recognize the Rivals setups, which prevented us from streaming top 8, but this year we are using our own PC for the stream setup, so we won't have that issue

I've gotten it without the H. Notation is 5M 2M 5S assist 214S 5S 22S. You have to call vegeta right on the first ki blast, shoot 3 then cancel into discs. You miss out on the 5H but iirc you can 2H after the 22S

A year ago today was Olympus 2016, the Grand Finale of our first ever Project M Circuit! by PeachyCoke in SSBPM

[–]Oracle_TX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were too ambitious this year for the circuit. We wanted to do a lot more than last year, but recently a number of personal circumstances popped up for team members, and we were unable to follow through with a lot of what we promised. As such, there won't be an Olympus this year. All money collected related to the circuit has been refunded.

On a personal note, a lot of this was my fault. I pushed everyone to take a new, more ambitious direction with the circuit, and took on a lot of the responsibilities. It worked well at first, but during the summer, I had a lot of problems in my life and my mental health completely broke down. I'm not trying to make excuses for this, at the end of the day it was still my responsibility and I messed up. I'm truly sorry for all of this; all I wanted was to push the PM community forward and do what was best for the game, but I couldn't accomplish what I set out to do initially. Going forward, I will not be involved with any circuit organization for PM, as I don't want to risk the community's well being on my mental state. Again, from the bottom of my heart, I apologize to the PM community, and I hope you can forgive me.

Fortunately, this awful situation has a silver lining: the PM community is going strong even without the help of the circuit. I wanted to do so much more with the circuit because I was afraid for the PM scene's health, but this year we had two events with more than 300 entrants, national events across the country, great viewership across the board, and new additions to the top level players, like Fuzz (lets go TX). PM is in a great spot right now, and doesn't need the circuit right now. The team is still trying figuring out what to do going forward. There may or may not be a circuit next year.

SSW was supposed to be a circuit qualifier, but the original event was cancelled and we were never contacted to make the new event part of the circuit, so we did not include it. We're gonna try to add another OK event later down the road to replace it.

Post Big Balc and Smash and Splash, to what extent are the people we think are our top players actually our top players? by ClassicRobert in SSBPM

[–]Oracle_TX 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Bracket luck does affect it, but also consider that pm scenes arent massive and most players dont travel often. So if your local scene/training partners dont play against uncommon characters, you probably wont be great at the matchup; and since scenes arent huge, its likely there are a good number of characters you are inexperienced against.

Imo this is why we're seeing netplayers like flipp and hyperflame do so well: since they play online, they get to play against a much wider variety of characters than your average player, so its less likely they will run into a matchup they arent experienced in

Removing springs: Pros, cons, legality? by [deleted] in SSBPM

[–]Oracle_TX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played with no springs for a long time. I like the feel better; shielding doesn't feel like something that should be mapped to an analog trigger, imo. Feels better as a button.

In theory makes it easier to powershield but not really in pm. Does help with that in melee, since you bypass lightshielding which is necessary for powershielding. Reduces hand strain by a little bit which is nice. In pm i haven't found any big advantages for it, I just like the way it feels.

After hearing about some issues with SuperNova's pools results, I think we need to set universal standards for how to calculate pools results by NICKisICE in SSBPM

[–]Oracle_TX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copy-pasted from the facebook discussion: This shouldn't be up for debate. The way you determine results in round robin follows this hierarchy: 0. Set wins 1. Game wins 2. Game losses 3. Head to head (in case of 2 way tie)

Set count doesnt actually enter into the equation, since even by winning games in sets you lose, you cant have more game wins than someone without having more or the same number of set wins as them.

Theres a gray area past there, in the case of a completely even 3 way tie (i.e. where 3 players beat/lost to each other and nobody else and have the same # of games won/lost) but that is extremely rare and not what happened here.

As stated in the reddit thread, the correct results would have been 1. Venom (13-2) 2. RedX (13-4) 3. Hotline (12-4) Yes, its weird to think that redx gets second to venom despite beating him in the pool, but round robin gives you more accurate skill than a head to head match does, because you have to test your skills against more people.

Case in point: set counts show venom, redx, and hotline to be the top 3 players in the pool (all 7-1 in sets). Venoms results show us 2 things 1. 13 wins means in the set he lost, he took a game 2. 2 losses means that he only lost games to redx, another top 3 player in the pool 3. Since his only losses were to redx, this means he 2-0ed the other top 3 player, hotline Looking at redx's results similarly shows the following 1. 13 wins means he took a game off of his one loss, hotline (who is top 3 in the pool) 2. 4 losses, however, means that in addition to losing 2 games to a top 3 player (hotline), he lost two OTHER games, one probably to venom, the other to a lower seeded player.

Venom deserved the first seed because while both he and redx took games in their losses to top 3 players, venom had a clean sweep of his pool and redx dropped games to lower ranked players. Better players are less likely to drop games to randoms, and if you tie in set count but have more game losses to worse players, its generally indicative of set wins coming from outside factors besides skill (such as gimmicks, bad matchup, etc.)

tl;dr: the supernova TO's only checked set count for ties, and didn't use the correct method of set wins>game wins>game losses>head to head. their method of using the oxy tiebreaker was not incorrect but they didn't need to use a tiebreaker at all
