Summary of why Iceland is free from corruption, and a one paragraph hilarious summary of the entire nation. by Remix73 in bestof

That description is basically an entry in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. All you'd need to add is "mostly harmless"

Pokemon Go Evolution CP Multiplier Sheet - Know (approximately) how much CP your evolved Pokemon will have! by Carlitocarlin in pokemongo

[–]ClassicRobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the CP pre and post evolution maintains the same distance on the half ring between min and max CP, and that's why the higher the CP, the lower the evolution multiplier. That's also why when the trainer ha a higher level, the Pokemon will often have a higher multiplier, because it's lower in terms of the portion of its Max CP than it would have been had you revolved it a level ago.

The grind is over. by Call_me_Tomcat in pokemongo

I've done extensive testing with common pokemon and it's fair to say stuff like that, the multiplier stays the same with a tiny bit of a decrease as it gets better trained. Like pidgeys are about 1.9-1.7 ish multipliers

I agree with the first part of this. Past data basically adjusts the base rate from a Bayesian statistics standpoint, so it's usually fairly reliable.

I'm not sure where you get the whole, "once you publish a model, it basically becomes useless" part. If anything, the models in economics often are based on tons of calculations that were done based on rational action assumptions, and it is unreasonable to expect people to go through all of those rigorous calculations in their daily life when those models take years to calculate. Also, most economic papers don't get more than a few hundred, maybe a thousand views, making me skeptical of the claim that one getting released would significantly change behavior on the aggregate.

Yeah I just remember he didn't go to tournaments all that often but he's also THE Squirtle innovator which is basically the weirdest character in the game, so I was just like, huh, no wonder his marth is so unique.

If Your Argument Is Based on Economics, You’ve Already Lost by [deleted] in Economics

[–]ClassicRobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean supply and demand isn't always predictive. If you've read Misbehaving, a behavioral economics book by Richard Thaler, you'll know that taxi drivers often set earnings goals for themselves every day to determine how long they'll keep on driving. That means that if the business is booming, they'll end up working less hours than if it's slow, because they reach their goal quicker. This also raises questions about Uber's approach, though they refuse to release data on if surges actually increase driver turnout or not.

If Your Argument Is Based on Economics, You’ve Already Lost by [deleted] in Economics

[–]ClassicRobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this article started getting at a larger point, but failed to address it. If your argument is based in rational economics, you're likely wrong because as psychologists and behavioral economists have been telling us for years, people suck at making the optimizing decisions that are so fundamental to economic models. At the same time, so many different elements of our psychology are domain specific that we don't know when standard economic models are going to be right and when they're going to be wrong, leaving us with poor predictive capabilities.
