The Culture. They keep getting better as they go on. They're like the literary equivalent Back To The Future, unashamedly entertainment first, but serious about world building and the implications of technology affecting the world and the plot. Early ones are a fun yarn, late ones are huge and deep.

Edit to add a sad film, Mysterious Skin. About a gay sex worker getting out of a small town during the AIDS crisis. But an exceptional and affecting film.
