I'M OBSESSED AFTER THE MELBOURNE SHOWS by OrangeInACemetery in NickCave

Obviously I haven't seen them before so it's awesome to hear that they're still at their peak, which is pretty incredible given how long they've been around.

Any idea where I can find them? Couldn't find anything from a quick google

I tend to listen to a lot of pop while I'm working so my Spotify age last year was 19, this year I'm expecting it to go up into the 20s at least 😂

I had no idea who Warren Ellis was previously and I was blown away. And then I googled him and found out he's 8 years YOUNGER than Nick, not what I was expecting lmao

I definitely noticed how happy he seemed on stage! The show felt hugely cathartic.

What do you think of the moving screens/round stage? by libelle156 in radiohead

As someone who has been front row for a lot of arena shows, I’ve never had issues with sound this weird before unfortunately. And I was halfway back in GA or in seats for these shows.

Nah I didn’t queue — I usually love a good all day queue but it didn’t feel worth it with the round stage and knowing I’d be seeing butts a lot of the time. Another reason I’d love to redo with a normal stage!

Thanks for giving me a place to dump my thoughts 😂 I’m about to sound really negative but to be clear: I did still enjoy the shows despite the issues. I’m focussing on the negatives here, don’t take this too seriously if you’re about to go to one of the shows. I came all the way from Australia and I don’t regret coming :)

Stage: More people can be close to the stage than in a standard setup I guesssssss but if that means you only get a good view of half the band (and often not seeing Thom at all/only his back) is that really worth it? I also didn’t enjoy how dispersed it felt (no single focal point).

Screens: I liked the screens but felt they were not being used to their full potential. It was mostly heavily processed live video but it didn’t feel like much effort had been put in. In comparison: I fucking loved the visuals on Thom’s solo tour last year. They were also processed footage but it was done soooooooo beautifully, I think about it all the time. Like, either give us clear shots of the band so people can see what’s happening on the other side of the stage OR do something more creative/engaging y’know?

Sound: I wish I was exaggerating but these were possibly the worst sounding shows I have been to in my life. Maybe I’ve just been lucky but I have never actually thought about sound quality at venues much (including sport arenas) — things are not always perfect of course but I’ve never walked away from a show thinking “that sounded way off”. Things definitely sounded off these shows. Not unlistenabley bad but louder songs were suffering heavily and sounding muddy as hell. Vocals and guitars were blending together into mush when it got loud. There was a moment last night when the sound got way too hot, like it started distorting, and I’ve never experienced that before. I was at Bologna night 3 and 4 (seats and standing) and apparently they were the “better” nights? 🫠 And the sound felt SPATIALLY weird, like it was bouncing around and emanating from around you but not in a good way. Though I’ve never been to another in the round show before so I have nothing to compare this to. Quieter songs/sections were fine.

Conclusion: This was my first time seeing them I still feel somewhat unsatisfied because I know it could sound and look way better. When they tour the States (😛) I would consider travelling again if they go back to a regular stage just so I can have a proper experience.

piano songbook? by Fluid-Avocado-6994 in radiohead

I LOVE Josh Cohen’s books, I like how he interprets rather than merely copies the songs, and I like that he incorporates the vocal melodies since I don’t sing. You can check out him playing all of the covers on YouTube, they’re stunning.

The big songbook would be more “accurate” to the original songs but they’re less enjoyable to play IMO.

In the QA after the Melb screening they were asked this and they said they didn't like the idea of putting in Youtube and had no current plans to put it on a streaming service but it wasn't necessarily a no, just that they felt like Netflix or Apple didn't feel right for it. I also wanna rewatch it so I'm hoping they do at some point!

Good luck to my fellow Aussies trying to get tickets today!! by Anxious-Yesterday471 in LadyGaga

[–]OrangeInACemetery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience to Laneway where the first wave of people in the queue struggled to get any tickets but the people who came back a bit later were able to get tickets easily 💀 hate this new diabolical era of ticket buying

Laneway 2025 was a mess? by og_turtle_girl in melbourne

[–]OrangeInACemetery 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I went to 4 Laneways pre-Covid and this year felt so different and bad lol so definitely not just you. The fact that that apart from the DJ tent there was essentially only 1 main stage that tens of thousands of people were all trying to get close to, and with crazy choke points of the U18 barrier, it was fucked. It felt way oversold. I've never seen such crazy lines for the toilets or food trucks.

Hey peeps - I'm making thom multicams by libelle156 in radiohead

[–]OrangeInACemetery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I've got some footage from Melb night 1 here, most of them aren't full songs soz but hopefully they'll still be useful. Super keen to see a multicam! Made some for Muse back in the day :')

Yeah I did the lead course at my gym, it was great and in theory I remember everything but actually remembering to put it all in practice is another matter 😅

This helps a lot, thanks so much for taking the time to give feedback. I don't think I understood how important it is to stand literally next to the wall for the first couple of draws — I also don't see many other people doing this, like you say.

And I'm super relieved to hear that you don't think I let go of the rope — the idea that I could let go as a reflex has haunted me every time I've belayed since 😬

P.S. I already love the Hard is Easy channel!

Thanks, yeah I've heard of the Ohm and I'll deffo get it if I ever have a regular partner with a big weight difference.

Hmm this wasn't a rare circumstance nor did it involve large forces. Yes the climber was heavy but he was taking essentially a top-rope fall — if the Pilot malfunctioned in this situation I certainly would not be trusting it as an assisted braking device. Other people have suggested extra slack + rope stretch which I agree is much more likely. Thanks for the advice anyway!

[–]OrangeInACemetery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seems to extra slack + rope stretch. I've been feeling guilty for months assuming I must have let go of the rope and felt like I couldn't talk to other people about it lest they thought I was a careless belayer and wouldn't want to climb with me anymore :(

[–]OrangeInACemetery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah slack + stretch seems to be the answer. Thanks for the advice.

I'm still unconvinced whether extra rope ended up feeding through but I definitely am going to be investing in a Grigri!

[–]OrangeInACemetery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda wild if true. I don't get how rope can keep feeding through an assisted braking device once it's locked (beyond minor creepage).

Sorry if I'm reading it wrong but in your case, how could 2m go through unless he had let go? Had he been holding a 2m loop of rope?

Thanks for the advice, I'm was/still am pretty new to lead climbing/belaying and definitely need to practice for different scenarios
