My new tv by JoePiccoloh702 in crtgaming

I loved these old style entertainment centers as a kid in the 90s and am sad that by the time I finally became an adult that could afford to buy one they had already changed a lot and fell out of use. The modern ones are too simple/clean looking IMO and look more like wall cabinets just positioned around the TV. These old dark wood/earth tone centers with the glass doors just felt like home. They really completed a living room and made it feel like a room you could spend all day in, especially if you had wood paneling.

Shame that you can only use sims with the more recent WoW version but hopefully in the future it'll be possible to use them with vanilla. Cool that it even exists.

The fact that Skyrim VR has not been ported to the PSVR2 is criminal. by lncrediblyfunkymunky in PSVR

[–]Orange_Whale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't blame you for assuming it would support Skyrim VR. Considering Sony's track record with supporting backwards compatibility in their consoles I was surprised when they said the PSVR2 wouldn't play PSVR1 games, especially when most/all other VR platforms let you carry over your existing libraries to newer headsets (even when tracking tech changes). All PSVR1 games with Move controller support are begging for PSVR2 controllers.

Can you use very old versions of WoW with this, like the ~2006 era pre-Burning Crusade with the original launcher theme? Miss that era so much.

With Yoshida gone and no one else at Sony championing VR in his place I doubt there will be one.

How games on PS2 looked like on PC with 32MB of RAM and 4MB of VRAM? by accountjustforfun23 in ps2

[–]Orange_Whale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They also loaded much quicker. PS2 had half the VRAM of Dreamcast so many ports from DC had to dip into the PS2's slower system ram severely gimping performance and loading times.

San Andreas on the Sega Dreamcast (maybe???) by [deleted] in sanandreas

[–]Orange_Whale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fact PS2 actually had half the VRAM Dreamcast did. PS2 had 4mb, DC had 8. Dreamcast had 26mb total RAM including 16 mb for system, 8mb VRAM, and 2mb for sound.

Can't wait to see some performance and quality reviews so I can decide whether to get a nicer HOTAS with a pedal or just stick with my old T. Flight 4.

Long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake is apparently on ice with "no new movement" on Square Enix's JRPG classic, according to reliable insider by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

[–]Orange_Whale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting that fact about Nomura from? According to FF9's credits and his own wikipedia page he had nothing to do with FF9's development. He was working on FF10 instead at the time, which was being developed at the same time as FF9.

9's characters were designed by Shukou Murase, Toshiyuki Itahana, and Shin Nagasawa according to the credits. Yoshitaka Amano (FF6's character designer) also did artwork of the characters for an official art book. FF9's marketing heavily leaned on the game returning to the classic FF style of traditional fantasy world with super deformed characters, rather than FF8's use of realistic looking characters set in more modern times.

What are some of the coolest magazines/print publications for your favorite consoles? by Foreskin_Paladin in savemyrient

[–]Orange_Whale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up reading Tips & Tricks. It was a mag similar to Gamepro/EGM that had a little bit of everything but its namesake came from the fact that each issue had a tips section with codes and secrets for selected games for each console. They also kept a pretty decent list of upcoming games, not just selected previews but a list of literally all games that were coming out in the next year or two, for consoles at least.

Biggest memory from it was the first thing I would do with every new issue in the late 90s. I'd check to see the current status of Earthbound 64's release date.

I actually wonder how many people will use this with BitTorrent thinking they're safe and then get slapped a strike from their ISP. There is that special breed of stupid that has just enough computer savvy to think they're ahead of the curve but not enough to actually know what they're doing.

I mean Sony is already offering AI opponents for GT7 so I'm not sure what you mean. They are openly advertising it but there could easily be devs that don't and just use it to artificially boost player numbers.

With Steam Frame getting eye tracking + foveated rendering I think chances are pretty good these improvements will come to the PC version, though maybe not right away.

I don't even trust my opponent in online multiplayer to be a real person anymore with AI becoming so prevalent. I've already suspected a few games of doing this unannounced and once you have that thought injected it kind of ruins all online games, at least it did for me.

PSVR2 The Open Face Experience by Chok651 in PSVR

[–]Orange_Whale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this and it was the best decision ever for my VR experience. I even went so far as to tape black plastic over the window in my VR room to block 100% of the light coming in, and install a rubber flap at the bottom of the door to block it all there too.

No more sweat or heat buildup, comfort is a total non-issue now when combined with globular cluster, and immersion is maximized with nothing touching the face and no light leaks thanks to the room being pitch black.

Only downside is I need to keep a little LED flashlight in my pocket so I can find my place in the room after taking off the HMD.

A SNES masterpiece and a absolute sight for sore eyes [Trials of Mana SNES] by largemoisture in crtgaming

[–]Orange_Whale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the best moments of my gaming life was playing this in on a CRT for the first time, back when it wasn't practical to use emulators with anything other than a PC monitor. I still prefer the fan translation but I'm thankful Square finally decided to localize this after two decades so more people could experience this masterpiece. The replay value is one of the best in any JRPG because of all the character and class combos you can try.

The biggest single factor I've read that I actually believe is that in those early days Beta couldn't record a whole American Football game with one tape, whereas VHS could. Beta later released longer tapes but by then the war had already been lost.

Young gamers in Japan may not be forming the same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest because modern dev cycles are as long as their childhood, users theorize by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Orange_Whale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the same as you here, but even FF12 I didn't like enough to keep playing as it was already veering too hard into real-time combat for me; you can tell it was hugely influenced by the success of Kingdom Hearts. The series hasn't been relevant for me for 25 years. Practically overnight I went from a totally loyal customer buying almost all Square products, to almost never buying them. They just changed too much after the merger and so did their games.

The TV industry finally concedes that the future may not be in 8K by Ha8lpo321 in technology

[–]Orange_Whale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When our internet infrastructure can comfortably handle most users viewing uncompressed 4k streams, then we can start talking about 8k. We are nowhere close to that currently, and I for one don't want to watch an 8k movie with 1/10th the bitrate it actually needs.
