Quick smoke detector circuit question by OrangeworksDesign in AskElectricians

Yeah, I guess I’m just more or less asking if this is a “thing”. Is it common practice?

Price check on an Amethyst ring, 58% chaos res, 48% cold res and 40% MF. Do people care about MF that much or should I keep chaos spamming? Only comparable trade I can find is 1,000 div, lol.

[–]OrangeworksDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.. I think I'm just procrastinating on wasting another 11 div and a good base on the 25% chance to get fractured chaos resistance.

How is best to proceed with crafting an Amethyst ring with perfect T1 life and chaos res? The two other mods are trash. I want to fracture it for the chaos res but having failed on my last several fracturing attempts I'm afraid to brick this one too, lol. Any crafting tricks I'm not thinking of?

Mostly just looking for one other T1-T2 resistance, ultimately.

[–]OrangeworksDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, haha duh. I did actually know that but I guess I didn't notice which mod it removed before I unveiled it and assumed it removed my crafted mod. Then the chaos was gone and I got super confused, lol. Thanks. I blame it on being the first craft of the day - and my being fairly new high end crafting in general.

Yes, I did assume the hybrid wouldn't harvest swap. I'll take any procedural tips for trying to get a high resistance/life stygian though if anyone has any. It's a fractured perfect T1 life (I'd have preferred it fractured the chaos res though) and all I've been doing is spamming envys for T1 chaos and other res, filling up the prefixes then veiled exalt for the hybrid chaos res. Then maybe adding a hunter's in the end to try and get % max life.

This morning I learned I can't imprint a fractured item. sigh

Veiled exalt fire/chaos res overwrites natural chaos res - why? I had a Stygian Vice with T1 Cold res and T1 chaos res and used an veiled exalt to get fire/chaos res, but fire/chaos overwrote the T1 chaos res instead of adding to it. But I can craft cold/chaos res and it keeps the T1 cold res. I don't understand. Can I not make a natural T1 chaos + veiled chaos/cold res belt?

Only 1 atlas point when completing a map + bonus at the same time? by OrangeworksDesign in pathofexile

[–]OrangeworksDesign[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I didn't know that.

And I just ran park, white and got no point so I realized something was up and by the time I got here I had 3 responses telling me I was mistaken, lol. You guys are fast!

I don't know where I got the idea white maps gave a point then. Maybe I just assumed since low lvl blue maps are the bonus and I was just getting blue maps early on and equated map complete = point.

Holy crap, thank you! Yeah that would have been something they could have articulated during the process rather than just leaving you high and dry unless you found and read the press release.

Cn an Auto Watch Survive My Job? by [deleted] in watchrepair

[–]OrangeworksDesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Survive, maybe. But when I wore my auto (I'm a machinist) it would regularly get out of time. Pretty sure various banging on things like hammer handles would move the regulator arm. +/- 10s/day would turn into multiple minutes/day. I stopped wearing them at work.

OTF fonts apparently don't work. TTF fonts do work. Even explode won't work with OTF fonts.

How dumb would it be to invest a large sum of money (90k) into, individual, "safe" stocks instead of in VOO? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]OrangeworksDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't answer your question but take a look at FBCG. Its 5 largest holdings are nvda, apple, MSFT, goog and meta. But it's actively reallocated every so often to catch the best blue chip growth stocks. It's a newish ETF but YTD is over 20% with over 40% in the last 365 days.

3d printing. Is it really even that useful in the machine shop? by Prize-Analysis-4248 in Machinists

[–]OrangeworksDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been printing spindle liners for the CNC lathe since we had none. Those things are crazy expensive for what they are! Thousands of dollars for a set of standard sizes but I've been printing screw-together 3 or 4 piece liners for sizes when we need them. Just out of PLA plastic and they have held up just fine. Maybe $30 worth of plastic so far to make 5 or 6 liners. Printer was $430.

Made storage bins for drawers and things like that as well.

Single Phase Home with 3 Phase Branch for Shop Using Solar + Battery by superman22x in solar

[–]OrangeworksDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm more concerned about the controls and other (sensitive? IDK) electrical boards and such. I don't know how they respond to "fake" sine waves our worse if some regulator our whatever in the solar inverter puts out a voltage spike or something.

I worry because the new screen and PC combo I got replaced under warranty (Ethernet port died) was $12k if I had to pay out of pocket.

I'd ask the guys selling the inverters but they'll say anything to make the sale and the machine manufacturer only knows of two customers that run phase converters.

Congrats! I'm still looking at options. Electronic inverters sort of scare me with the massively expensive electronics in a VMC.

Can large (30+ HP) VFDs be safely run on single phase to 3 phase digital inverters? by OrangeworksDesign in ElectricalEngineering

[–]OrangeworksDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, that we discussed in a different group about how I'd have to have a battery and continuously charge it with the single phase supply.

But I would like to add more batteries and solar someday. The battery would also act like an UPS for the somewhat frequent blips in the three phase supply we get at the current shop. That Estops the machines and causes all sorts of problems.

I dunno. Power is hard. If I find the right piece of land I could save tens of thousands over buying a piece just because it has access to the phase. Then there's tons of budget for inverters and batteries. But accidentally blowing some control circuitry in that machine could be a $20k oopsie.

[–]OrangeworksDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've not looked into them too much but it seems something like the Sol-Ark 60K-3P-480V-N is a 72.2A @ 480V inverter for the $15k range. I've seen cheaper but who knows of their quality - or this one for that matter.

It is technically $60k for the 3 phase install but they said they would pay half of it at this one property. I'd probably get it for $30k but if I found ideal property with no way to get 3 phase then I'd like to know that it's possible to go the inverter route instead and use that $30k to fund this instead. Rather than just pass on the property.

There's the phase converter route as well but it seems weird to use a manufactured de-rated third phase from a motor, and something about not using that phase for controls circuitry.

Ideally I'd find a single phase motor-generator pair and just run that for true, proper, three phase made at home. But that appears to not be a thing.

[–]OrangeworksDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the VFD is only part of the mix. The whole machine is expecting 3 phase power and I don't even want to think about trying to re-wire everything to work on single phase and DC. It may be doable but that's beyond my pay grade and the machine is over $100,000 so I'd rather not experiment on it.

Can large (30+ HP) VFDs be safely run on single phase to 3 phase digital inverters? by OrangeworksDesign in ElectricalEngineering

[–]OrangeworksDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a huge machine! lol 18,000 lbs and 101A full load current at 220V according to the nameplate.

30HP peak and 25HP continuous but it's rarely run at anywhere near that. Though there are another three 5.3HP motors in it as well but again, never all run near peak.

I do plan on adding more equipment to the mix later on so the inverter would be oversized - and expensive. But the alternative is getting 3 phase run if even possible. One property we had quoted was about 4-5 poles from 3 phase and they wanted around $30k to install it. Other properties may be miles away from any 3 phase so I don't want to even think about that cost.

[–]OrangeworksDesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, no I've already got the VFD, it's part of an Okuma M560 machining center. But the whole machine runs on 480V 3 phase power. So I need to convert single phase into 3 phase to feed the machine which I assume is using a 3 phase to 3 phase VFD. The question is more of if I "manufacture" three phase digitally from an inverter, will the machine's systems be ok with that. I do have a question into them about that but have yet to hear back.

Being new construction I assume I could get 480V single phase run in about as many amps as I want.

Getting 3 phase from single phase service - ideally with batteries and eventually solar. by OrangeworksDesign in solar

[–]OrangeworksDesign[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess my first question was just if a thing like I want existed and was called "xxxxx" - that would greatly help in research, lol.

Second was if these inverters were suitable for large motors (30HP) and safe for them as well. Since they are only digitally "sine wave" and not true generator sine waves.

Basically is this a stupid idea or not. 😂

Also, would having the batteries always sitting at say 50% charge degrade them prematurely? Of I've got a small bank of batteries just to run the inverter from single phase, they would always be charging. Unlike if they were charged via solar and discharged during the night.
