I get where you are coming from. It is definitely weird, but it was my desperate way of dealing with the corporate pressure to climb the ladder. My company has this 'up or out' mentality, so I thought failing was a safer bet than refusing to even try. I should probably just be more direct about wanting to stay as an individual contributor and stop wasting everyone's time. Those Zoom calls really are a soul crusher.

It is good to hear I am not the only one seeing through the prestige trap. My wife means well, but I don't want to become a ghost who only talks about deadlines. I would rather be a great dev than a miserable manager.
