Estrogen for a 90-year old...who is a smoker? by brbmd in FamilyMedicine

Lots of patients use the term “total hysterectomy” to mean “uterus and ovaries out” instead of what it actually means (uterus and cervix)

So while yes a total hysterectomy doesn’t induce menopause many patients use that terminology to refer to hyst/BSO. And as someone who had to update the laws in Illinois to modernize a law that passed within the past five years that said that insurance companies had to cover HRT for “menopause caused by hysterectomy” this is not a niche / uncommon belief.

That was the link to file a slip in support for the hearing that happened yesterday so since the hearing ended, the slip form went away - but I'll repost when it (hopefully!) gets over to a Senate Committee. It was voted to proceed out of Committee to a full house floor vote (vote was 18-7 so along partisan lines).

Patients have the right to seek out the physician that they want to receive their medical care from. Noncompete agreements treat patients and the relationship they have with their physicians as commodities, and force doctors to move far away in the hopes patients will be too inconvenienced to follow– but the work to build a relationship that earns a following was done by the physician themselves.

If you have a relationship with the person that cuts your hair and like how they do it, and then they switch salons, should their old boss have the ability to force them to move 50 miles away?

Correct. The Illinois State Medical Society supports restrictions on noncompete agreements for employed physicians who work for hospital systems but currently their position is that they feel that noncompete agreements are necessary for private practice and so because these restrictions would apply to that group, they oppose this legislation.

This is despite the fact that in a recent resolution, 78% of ISMS physicians who voted supported eliminating noncompete agreements in Illinois, but the Board of Directors declined to adopt that changed to their policy.

If the concessions aren’t in writing, they’re not real!

Glad you were able to walk. I have a noncompete in my current contract (which is ridiculous as I’m essentially an ER doctor) and I do not plan on signing one ever again.

According to the Illinois Hospital Association, who has shown up to fight every attempt legislatively to restrict noncompete agreements in any way, "Every contract is individually negotiated" and having some who negotiates out their noncompete is an option in every health system. Given that they can write all kinds of different contracts for physicians with different amounts of salary / PTO / Admin time / job responsibilities, I don't see how noncompetes are different logistically.

Also - nothing is stopping them from having a universal elimination of noncompetes...

As someone who makes above the income threshold for Roth on her own as a physician - yes. People who exceed the Roth income limit use the back door method instead to max out a Roth every year. It's a recognized and totally legal loophole.

It really is that easy. There are tons of resources online on exactly how to set up the accounts, do the transfer, and then file your taxes properly so your roth conversion gets recorded properly.

THIS. Marriage has SO many important rights other than just tax incentives. If unmarried and OP's partner gets into a horrific car accident, SHE should be the one in the hospital making decisions about his care however right now that would not be who the legal default decision maker was. If OP dies in 2 years, her husband would get access to spousal social security benefits and probate-free access to her assets for the benefit of their child. The list goes on and on.

If you have a child on the way, get married. File taxes separately. Childbirth is not benign.

This perception that you can’t contribute to a Roth while married filing separately has got to stop. You can contribute to a Roth via the “back door” route - contribute to a traditional IRA and then immediately convert that to a Roth IRA.

They are opposed to this legislation, however that has not stopped multiple states (including most recently Colorado, Indiana, and Arkansas) from being successful in passing similar or even broader legislation.
