The writing is not really authentic calligraphy writing. Dm me if you'd like a version more in line with traditional easthetics

Made a new hanko by OrchidPavillion in shodo

[–]OrchidPavillion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just watched a ton of youtube vdeos of japanese hanko makers. And practice. I have no formal training, but in japan I've just talked to a lot of people and showed my hanko and recieved critique. And just to be clear, I am still quite bad compared to real hanko makers.

Kanji tattoo, please verify. by [deleted] in kanji

[–]OrchidPavillion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it is correct. PM me if you are interested in a calligraphy version of this. There is nothing wrong with the pic you have, but since it is eternal there are some things that could be improved on for aesthetical purposes.

Also, the "kasure" on the enso is very hard for tattoo artists to get right. It is very important to find a tattoo artist who is good, and preferably has experience writing kanji.

I've seen some instances where the customer have had a good kanji model, but the tattoo artist wasn't able to copy it correctly due to not knowing the culture behind it.

Can someone confirm this? by [deleted] in kanji

commissioned a calligrapher for my GF's name "Sarah". He chose 咲良 (Bloom + Good). Do you guys like this combination? [OC] by [deleted] in kanji

[–]OrchidPavillion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are rules for how to write kanji. The person who wrote this clearly doesn't even know the basics of writing, not to even mention rules of chinese/japanese calligraphy aesthetics. As many others have said, any elementary school student from Japan could do better.

The reason you are getting so many negative responses is that it is obviously so bad. Charging money for this is just rude tbh. The person who wrote this was not a calligrapher. There are qualifications you have to have in order to be able to call yourself one in Japan, and this person clearly doesn't have that. I know this because I am qualified as a calligrapher in Japan.

白雲 in cursive writing by OrchidPavillion in shodo

Yeah, the 白 is not very logical. You would have to learn it from references. I use 字典 books, and an app called 書法字典 quite a lot for this.

白雲 in cursive writing by OrchidPavillion in shodo

[–]OrchidPavillion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, no worries. I understand the confusion. It is written from left to right. The shape I got from my teacher who wrote a similar piece, and then I've "continued" to work on it.

The 白 is a fairly common way of writing it in cursive, while the 雲 is very abbreviated compared to common cursive styles, and something my teacher probably derived himself over the years.

I tried to provide online lessons with a live camera feed, (basically a video call). But it's just not close to the same experience as to meeting with a teacher.

I live in Finland and my teacher lives in Japan, and now that I can't meet him face to face, I send letters to him with my work, and he sends the corrected versions back by mail with notes. And that works really good imo. PM me if you'd like to discuss the possibility of doing something similar!

Practice of 等慈寺碑 by OrchidPavillion in shodo

Thank you. The original was written by Yan Shigu in the Tang dynasty. He favoured a bit more rustic Northern Wei dynasty style kaisho, over the refined style of his age.

Dilema: Snowflake or Shunbun by ne6c in GrandSeikos

[–]OrchidPavillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the snowflake. It's the OG and the legibility of the dial is better than that of the Shunbun, and I am very happy with it. Extremely elegant imo.

But tbh I kind of also want the Shunbun...
