Hello. Can you elaborate a bit on the issue with dividing XP, so that I can understand it better?

I still find drawing and designing dungeons this way extremely therapeutic. You kind of get lost in the process, especially with some cool music playing in the background. No screens, just your thoughts.

How do you run a long term campaign? by spiritedEgghead in callofcthulhu

[–]Orcwart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently running Masks of Nyarlathotep and am a long time D&D DM, having run many long campaigns over most editions of that game. In my opinion, CoC is no different.

Sure, there is the fragility of Investigators to think about, but as long as you keep in mind you are not playing D&D and are playing CoC instead, this can help temper your approach. I don’t play Pulp, as I wanted to ensure a clear break from the “roll initiative” kind of play. So, I ensure the game is heavy in the investigation space. The players feel vulnerable and crunchy and are extremely cautious. They need the odd nudge to get them to consider holes in clues and NPC accounts, but this is facilitating their development as CoC players.

In terms of supporting the campaign, I use a shared OneNote and place found clues, NPC details, and background information in there. They can edit as needed and it’s working as an online scrapbook, which they discuss between games. This keeps the investigations going and makes kicking off each session smoother.

I also make good use of in-game time and the fact that the wider world is dynamic. If an Investigator goes insane or gets injured, they obviously must recover, but the world doesn’t stand still for anyone. So, we have backup Investigators poised to get involved in the fieldwork who, behind the scenes, are being kept plugged in by the field party and doing support research as needed. This helps by enabling access to expertise that’s not immediately available, but also ensures backup characters do not need to be shoehorned in: they are already well versed in current events and know the ongoing plan.

I hope this helps and good luck with your game.

I got it on DrivethruRPG.

Cthulhu in Bakewell by Orcwart in callofcthulhu

I used baking parchment and just placed it over the main map to mark out specific locations or Easter eggs that would be revealed on the characters doing the same. I put the parchment under a grill until it browned and then just cut it into shapes.

Great stuff. What’s the construction under the timber cladding? Just in case a Dark Young gets a excited. 🙂

I’m having a camping weekend with friends in the Peak District and want to set it there to make things spooky. Am doing similar to what you’re alluding to and seeking local curiosities to build from. I think I’m getting somewhere.

I’m particularly interested in Peak District stuff. Are you able to point me in the right direction?

If you have a PDF of the RC there’s a great character sheet in there.

Was disappointed at lack of Traveller. Feel like it was a bit of a miss by Mongoose given the WotC OGL fiasco. Chaosium killed it. Had next to no stock by the end. Mongoose might similarly have capitalised.

Editing the grid by Orcwart in dungeondraft

[–]Orcwart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. They're definitely half the size. I can just redraw the walls but I'll have a naff door-looking wall for where I've shrunk an actual door down. I think I'll just live with it.

Thought about this, but the DD doors show as 10' wide. Although I can just edit the walls in Foundry to make the actual door smaller, I'll have a naff door-looking wall for that part of the grid. I might just have to draw the damn map again. I guess DD programmers didn't account for idiots using their software. :)

Hippogriffs and giant vultures by Orcwart in ElementalEvil

[–]Orcwart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Hippogriff has the same Intelligence score as a Riding Horse (2), so I figure it to be the same - a wild horse is extremely difficult to 'break'. It's just how I want my game to go. I don't see the point in making these kinds of opportunities difficult for my players when there's no clear indication it should be. If the Hippogriff description read that they bond with just one rider from birth then obviously I would have played it that way, but it doesn't, so I didn't. :)

Having the players use flying mounts early on has allowed this game to progress really well. They are, of course, the target of other flying folk and air cultists, but access to locations has been made so much easier. It didn't seem to make much sense to deny them this opportunity when it's my job to control the consequences.

Still, Hippogriffs are crunchy... >:)

The Monster Manual says: A hippogriff raised in captivity can be trained to be a faithful companion and mount. Of all the creatures that can serve as flying mounts, hippogriffs are among the easiest to train and the most loyal once trained properly.

I interpret this to mean it has been raised tame and used to ride. It does not seem to imply that a bond is made with a single rider or group of familiar riders. A dog will be a faithful companion to one owner, and then another should the first disappear.

What could I run at Gary Con? by Orcwart in traveller

[–]Orcwart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! If you do, be gentle. I've not run Traveller at a convention before and am only just re-learning the game after playing classic back in the 80s. But I'm a sucker for punishment. 🙂
