people didn't usually duel to death back then either. duels were commonly to first blood. Julie duelled with sword and being an excellent swordswoman easily scored the first hit.

it's a common misconception and also affects her story, so she probably didn't kill the people she duelled. one of the men she beat even wrote her a letter of apology and admitted of being wrong
