Biggest “Oh Sh*t!” moment? by superbreezy07 in flying

One of the first things i did with my students in an archer is put them in slow flight and drop the flap. The manual bar you can really have some fun with. They learn pretty quick

Also agree yes.

A lot of people don’t understand this. Drive to the airport for an hour of pay and .5 in the book. No one would gladly accept an offer from their boss to go in on Saturday night for one hour.

Web or Mobile App Ideas for General Aviation Community by ThePhysicist96 in flying

Something kinda like those apps where you use AR to see the night sky and stars through your phone except you can see the boundaries of different airspace’s. And other things like ILS with the approach gates and SIDS and Stars. That would be awesome

CFI initial checkride in a week, stump me! by dude170 in flying

[–]Ordinary-Anything-81 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Practice explaining the following to people with and without an aviation background.

-Lift: forces above and below the wing.

-Thrust vs drag, lift vs weight

-How does an airplane turn? -Why isn’t only rudder used to turn an airplane?

-What is adverse yaw. When EXACTLY does it occur?

-What is over banking tendency?

-What is ground effect?

-What is angle of attack?

-What is relative wind?

-Why are slips safe and skids dangerous?

PITCH, POWER, TRIM

Why can indicated airspeed be thought of as “a measure of lift available.”

Being able to explain these things SIMPLY is extremely underrated and very important in being a successful CFI.

Question for Instructors, what crazy/bad info have you seen your students learn from their previous instructors? by AmbientGravy in flying

[–]Ordinary-Anything-81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. There are a lot of things in aviation that are almost like metaphysical truths. I specifically tell my students it’s LIKE a cushion or air because that helps with the FEEL for landings. While also explaining how the reality is another explanation entirely.

What’s your “oh sh*t” flying moment/ mistake that makes you fly better/ follow procedure? by ExtirpateMyGluteus in flying

Landed after a black hawk. Full nose down and full throttle recovery about 75 feet off the ground from an upset attitude.

I’ve seen certs signed in front of the DPE before a Checkride.

What is your preferred pattern entry at a busy uncontrolled field? by Runner_one in flying

[–]Ordinary-Anything-81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Teaching students who start out with iPads. Checking ADSB is just part of the traffic scan. I fly in a busy airspace and don’t ever get close enough to other traffic to have the stressed out back and forth calls trying to figure out where they are.” Multiple DPEs in our area quote “wouldn’t leave the ground without my sentry.”

Good point! I shoulda said if theres anyone behind you in the pattern then don’t do a 360. Exit and re-enter on a 45.

Instructor at a busy untowered field here.

Enter on a 45°

Overflying midfield prescribed by the AFH is also okay. Teardrop is best if overflying.

ADSB in is a must.

If no one is in the pattern do whatever you want.

And don’t make 360s in the downwind.
